TCCD modules, worth it over TCC5?

You care whats under the heatspreaders when you believe whats under there is better. Not everyone believes TCCD and TCC5 act the same. Sure, its supposed to be the same ICs, but why is it binned lower then? I haven't saw any TCC5 that would run at DDR 600 @ 2.5-3-3, there has to be a reason for that. Getting what is guaranteed is not enough for most, I know I want the tightest timings and highest clocks possible. If TCCD gets me 2 more Mhz, its worth it IMO.

Look at the price of old school BH-5, it sells for $200+ as if it just came out. That’s because people care what kind of chips it has even though a $100 set of UTT may obtain similar clocks.

The Traditions of the Elders

It’s a hard call, sometimes the emotional bonding to historical experience of the “elders” is a strong pull. Sometimes the “Traditions” are worth hanging onto, often times new traditions are better.

I’m new to all of this, but do find myself reading and going, hmmm, wonder if I should try and find some old used BH6 – the elders swear by it. But would it actually be better than my vx? Don’t know.

I am to the point that I would like to try some of the other side of the spectrum, and I ask my self – elders – start looking for TCCD or believe what OCZ is telling me and go TCC5.

Well I may be foolish, but I’ve found those OCZ guys to be very straight forward … and I believe them. I’d buy their TCC5. But like any OC’er If they had both, and binned both, and the TCCD actually binned higher, sure I buy the highest binned mem I could get.

So, what is it, Traditions of the Fathers (TCCD really faster better) – or just that, Traditions of the Fathers (emotional).

Well, to say the truth, I would simply like ram bined at high speeds, and the chips its using is secondary. If it can do DDR600 2.5-3-3-6 I don't really care what chips are under the platinum heatspreader :)

I voted yes, as so far it seems that TCCD is doing slightly better, and they would undoubtebly sell :) However, those who already have TCCD probably will not upgrade, as DDR1 slowly bu surely is saying goodbye to us all :)

its not binned lower, its just not tested as ddr500 to cut the costs and make it more competitive on the market.

actually, none of the newer week tccd's can do ddr600 2.5-3-3. if you say that g.skill has them, but look at their code. its week 440 or older. only old ones can do that. where can you really get a mass amount of old tccd's?

and ocz's release of pc4800 and pc5000 tcc5 already proves that tcc5 is just as good as tccd.

tccd might be too test intensive on the fab level for samsung and at the end costs them a lot more money. tcc5 is rated lower maybe because it doesnt need the extensive stringent testing on samsungs part.

exactly. i tried to explain that in tcc5 sticky couple of weeks ago but it seems people find that hard to accept.

Computers and overclocking are my Hobby and I spent my money on it, within reason of course, I like to know what I'm buying, I paid the price of tccd for my tcc5, so yes the price is fine for tccd.

I said "yes," even though I wouldn't pay extra for the TCCD.

You guys are dealing with a pretty widespread perception that there's a difference between the TCCD and TCC5 -- even if there's no actual performance difference. If you can cater to the market desire for the D chips and still make a profit, go ahead and do so. IMO, as long as you guys are differentiating the two parts based on the chips and not claiming a performance difference where none exists, there's nothing misleading about making a distinction.

Always? What about Mushkin starting the whole BH5/Bh6 craze? They were promoting it when their pc3700 sticks were the highest speedbin you could get.

Whike OCZ has undoubtedly been incredibly innovative, and done great thigns for the memory industry, I think that's an unfair statement. Especially since you've only been in the memory market 5 years this August.


I would pay extra for the known TCCD BTW. FOr no logical reason, just because i'm more familiar with it than TCC5. I think a LOT of consumers would do that too, and that it would be a good idea for you guys to make a line with it. Prolly make you a few extra $$.

Samsung makes a number of TCxx chips, with the xx simply being the tested speed grade (the T is for TSOP II packaging and the C for commercial temp range) of the individual chips. If a DIMM manufacturer speed bins the chips themselves, it makes no difference what they use to get there - the only affect is on their bin distribrution.

Would I personally pay more just because it says "TCCD" on the chips... NO WAY!!. Would I personally pay more because the DIMMs are binned to run 1T 2.5-3-3-6 @ 300Mhz+ in 2x512 config with interleave enabled...DEFINITELY.

If the difference in price/performance is reasonable, I do not doubt it.

i would probably spend the extra money on the TCCD, because i have heard a lot of favoratism over the tcc5 stuff.

afaik, samsung is and will be creating TCCD throughout 06 and beyond. It has a contract with corsair I believe. However, availability to other companys is whats limited.

Definatly. My mushkin stuff does DDR600 for ~40ish minutes error free (stopped it) but my memory controller cant keep windows stable.. Its either TCCD, or TCC5. Either way, it should all perform well. $20 is better spent binning 20 more IC's than paying for a label as emc2 said. :)

I voted yes b/c I'd like to have the choice, but I wouldn't necessarily buy TCCD over TCC5. I'm not particularly impressed with the newest speed-bined TCCD/TCC5 from OCZ either way though. It seems like the many of the original Plat Rev 2 did about as well but at half the price.

It would seem a bit odd for OCZ to market a TCCD specific product after assuring everyone there is little to no difference with TCC5. If OCZ goes forward with a TCCD specific product knowing they are marketing a product only to address a unsubstanciated perception by some of their customers ... that would strike me as a little silly. So of sourse I'm voting yes, because I'm in favor of all things silly. :p:

99% fact. i've gone through too many sticks. you'd be surprised at how many i've played with.

and 440, 437, 431 are pretty much the best ICs. you wont be able to find those anymore unless a memory manufacturer picked up a lingering lot and made the sticks. anything new tccd is 507 and beyond. those like lower voltages. sure some can do 300htt 2.5-4-3-7, but going beyond that and setting records wont be very likely. i mean i'd suggest ocz to go for it and build tccd sticks, but then people will end up complaining and saying the new tccd isnt as great as the old ones. then again they'll blame ocz because they fail to realize that newer week ICs dont overclock as well.

the geil one is awesome because they speedbin the ICs and take the top 10% or something and makes them. but even then, its extremely rare to get new tccd to do 300htt 2.5-3-3-6.

i voted no because the TCCD i had would only perform 3mhz faster at the same timings than my new TCC5

G.skill is still selling week 440 arnt they? Could ocz get some of these?
