Now that Sempron is 64-bit, the brand separation is based on:

- L2 cache size
- Stock clock freq
- # of memory channels

If they put Sempron on 939, there would not be enough distinction, especially with overclocking.

well as long as the name sempron is asociated with budget why would it matter if it was 939 or 745? it would be better for amd to have it 939 cause then they can up the rp rating on them wihtout actually increasing the speed. i dont see why amd would try to keep an old socket around, it just doesnt make any sense. amd is even moving some opteron's to socket 939 so its not like they are trying to keep each line of processors to its one socket.

Because if they want to KEEP the name associated with budget, or rather, keep the perception that A64 is a premium brand, it needs to be sufficiently differentiated.

If it isn't, people will stop paying more for A64s.

Moving 1xx Opteron to 939 is in fact related. Uniprocessor servers and workstations need to be cheaper, and 939 infrastructure is much cheaper than the 940 stuff.

Now, with Socket M2, next year, both Sempron (Manila) and A64 (Orleans) will be using it along with 1xx Opterons, (A64 starting in Q2) so they've obviously cooked up enough differentiation elsewhere by that point.

you must understand people who are most buying computers dont know what cache is or what the difference is between athlon and sempron cept sempron is cheeper, so no they dont have to keep them significantly different there is no benifit to doing so. sempron needs to be cheeper thats all and half the chache as venice is definatly a big difference and a forth of san diago.

yeah, but someone who knows abit about computers will know to look at a review of the processor. AMD's chips do take a hit from less cache, but not a huge hit. So single channel, less cache, and less clock speed works well to keep the processors seperate.

overclocked half the cache wont matter much but we have to realize overclockers are only a small amount of people. at stock there will enough of a difference that someone building a gaming computer will want a venice instead. you really cant look at this with the point of view of an overclocker saying oh ya half the cache dont matter at 2.8 itll more than make up for it.

Even when it's not overclocked, they don't do that badly. I know people who don't overclock, but would look at reviews when they buy a part and see the difference and be able to make a good decision off of that

2600+ does 60 sec spi 1M at defaul, they are great !(and I oced her to 8*277 stock voltage->44sec)

Maybe you could write a boot floppy to enable 64 bit then give the boot to the next in the sequence.

To be honest, the best solution for this would be the BIOS, share the info with people who make moded BIOSes, this way you can enable the x86-64 extention w/o the need of an OS or anything.
