I guess I got lucky with this 51, I had been reading that they didn't OC so well.
It was running fine at 293x9 in my cold ass unfinished basement - but once I moved it upstairs I had to drop it back to 285x9 to get it Prime stable again. My GPU faired even worse. My ambient temps jumped 3-4 degrees with the move, and that sure made a difference.
I'm happy enough with 2.6ish, even if it's at 1.63v. Come on Venice core!
nice winchester and nice ondie controller there! how high can you get with ras-cas3? this will improve performance quite a bit even if you have to give up a few MHz fsb. Thats some serious cooling you got, how much did ya heatsink/fan cost? my winnys running fine on stock cooling, they do run cool!
Thanks for the tip, I'll bump that 2.5 to 3 tonight and see if I can increase my overall benchmarks.
As for cooling, yeah, it might be a little overkill for a "budget" component system like this, but I was really looking towards the next AMD cores and the Nvidia 6900's. My cooling parts (the Zalman and XP-120) should transfer over to those parts fine (we'll see) in a few months. Together, they were probably $80ish. Overkill for now, but perhaps just right for the next wave of chips.
And next time I won't spread on the AS5 like frosting!
for that next time, follow arctic silver's instructions
hell, do it now, if moving to a 3-4c warmer place dropped your oc by 70mhz, the cooler temps a proper mount will give will definitly help that oc out and you might make it back to that 2.7ghz mark :toast:
and what Geforce4ti4200 was talking about, you have timings of 2.5-4-3.
the 4 is ras-cas. drop it to 3.. though as he said, you may have to give up a few mhz.
going from cas2.5 to 3 will hurt performance, though you'll be able to clock a bit higher.
with a64's, it's generally better to have tighter timings.
btw- what are your load temps now anyhow?

I dropped the ras-cas to 3, and lost 1M superPI. I got it back at 291x9, but don't have 2M anymore. Overall my buffered mem benchmark jumped from 7499/7378 to 7568/7468.
My 3dmark03 increased by 10 pts, from 9960 to 9970. Ever closer...
Through all this testing, my max cpu load temp hit a peak of 39, chipset max was about 37-38 I think. At least during SuperPI.
Do you think reapplying the AS5 correctly might be worth a degree or two? I might get those few mhz back. Damn, why didn't I read those instructions before....assumption should be my middle name.

it prob would be, the way you spreaded it on, it looks more like die electrice grease, hehe. Anyway bought one from monarch? I need a 939 3000 to tide me over till dual core comes in but I don't want a crap clocker.
I have to comment on this too. I'd gaurantee MUCH better temps (not to mention with that much capacitive paste it could get under the LGA clamp and cause a short) applying a minute simple dollup (about a rice sized grain at MOST) of AS5 and DO NOT SPREAD IT. Spreading incorperates air into the paste which of course acts as an insulator not a conductor of heat.Quote:

I've had several conversations with Nevin House of Arctic Silver on just this subject.
I think what arctic silver is trying to tell us is the best way. I heard to spread it or drop a dab. I spreaded first a couple times on my 3500+ and got a max of probably around 2.4ghz. Then doing the dab method, I finally got it to 2.6 stable. It definitely helped I was so used to spreading it on the athlon xp's. Good info, Liquid3d!
People don't realize its just to fill in the imperfections - not to give the Cooler the feeling of "laying on a bed of roses" when it's mounted :)

Well yeah, but what does the heatspreader do? It spreads the heat from the core over the rest of the spreader. So that should lead to lower temps. Am I right or not? Anyway I'm definatly gonna do some testing on this when my new cpu arrives this week! :)
When my new Moblie 3200 comes, I will try this method of a small drop and do not spread. I have always spread it out.
all the spreader really does is protect the actual core from getting chipped/cracked/scratched, if anything the IHS is just another a barrier between you and that next 10 mhz oc. I wish they all still came with no IHS, especially the 939's. It should be called Intergrated Heat Barrier, not spreader :rolleyes:

zzf has 0502's axxx, and I'm with A X on AS, granted it only needs to be microns thick, but it seems like the more surface area = more transfer. The outer edges can be maximized to transfer heat even though the core is only in the center.
Nice to get clear about the AS5 stuff. Have always used a small amount, but I wouldnt destroy anything by applying even less. Nice.
Just received a 0448 SPAW yesterday - I really look forward to testing it!
That XP120 takes up 1/4 of the whole board. Pics of it just keeps making me go :eek:
