Personally? I think it's a dumb buy. $19 more and you get a 2800+ with 512k cache... Which I'd wager gives slightly more performance boost than 512k-1m cache did... and people paid easily $100 at times for that jump. I wouldn't be surprised if we see this processor goes down to ~$100 over the next month, month and a half as AMD tries to push the phase out of Socket A. Unless there is at least $30 difference I would never take this over a Newcastle (Unless this overclocks better).
it all depends upon what you're gonna use it for I guess. The semprons are also likely to go way down in price due to the fact that they are currently very new, and places like newegg jack up their prices whenever something might become popular.
That's exactly why one would take this processor. You aren't guaranteed a CG with the 2800+. In fact, there are still quite a few 2800+ C0s out there. All of the 3100+s are CG.Quote:

I'd imagine they will drop some more. When they get closer to $100, they'll be a real steal. I got mine for $100 off of Ebay, and I couldn't be happier with a $100 chip.
you can count on the price falling. AMD cant expect to sell 1.8ghz semprons for $125 when you can get 1.8ghz newcastles for $150 unless they plan on dropping the a64 2800. Its worth $50 just to be able to install win64 when it hits.
Altho i did just figure a very nice complete budget gamer for under a grand with a sempron 3100+/VNF3-250/1gig pdp3200LL/9800pro with a 19" monitor/case/keyboard/mouse/burner for $965. That isnt to bad if you couldnt get a 2800+ for $50 bucks more.

Yes, it's on my Leadtek K8N, but I don't have the Alpha on there. I have some wimpy Alu cooler with a copper base. Thinking about throwing the Alpha on there, but I was going to sell it with my Mobile chip and buy an XP-90 or XP-120 for this chip.
the semprons do have their role, not everyone wants to pay over $100 for a new cpu. the loss of cache would cost it like 200MHz but overclock a sempron to 2.4GHz and itll be like a stock 3200+ castle anyway. 1mb cache has yet another 200MHz lead over 512k

Not S754.. Any sempr0n Socket A is kinda useless since all that and more can be had with the mobiles.
I am going to pick up a sempron in the near future, I am currently on a mobile 2600+ in a shuttle SFF @ 2.5ghz but I am looking to move towards an A64 setup
The thing is I dont want to spend an assload of cash on a 1mb cpu right away being the cheapest one is $400 canadian(3400+)
So, I am going to pickup a Sempron 3100+ and a Lanparty UT 250GB and clock the living :banana: :banana: :banana: :banana: out of it, it will easily destroy my AXP setup so I am going to have no room to complain, it is definately an UPGRADE for me even though its considered a "budget" processor
and then when I have enough money, Ill pick up a 3700+ 1mb cpu and discard the sempron :) Also, looking at anandtechs graphs the 2800+ 512k and the 3100+ sempron were pretty darn close in performance easily dominating all AXP and alot of P4s
Not to mention, less cache usually gives you more leeway in high clocks

3Dmarks for some, they actually USE their computer for other stuffs........................................
besides, it is a good way to slip into an a64 setup while on a budget, then wait for the prices to drop and they move up to a more efficient CPU (512-1meg cache unit).

Most people who get a Sempron are not going to go with an X800 or 6800. For them, something like a 9800 will be just fine, and you'll see very little difference between a Sempron and an A64 in REAL GAMES. The difference in 3dmark won't be that high, either. I don't believe that anyone who buys a Sempron is actually looking to break any 3dmark records - they're just looking for good value, and as bldegle2 said, an inexpensive way to put a foot into the A64 world.Quote:

I doubt semprons will beat 2800+ in overclocks. I bought a 2800+ off newegg about 2 months ago and Got a NC. I'd be surprised if newegg is shipping out ANY CO's in retail boxes these days.

Well according to all benchmarks, the S754 Sempron will out benchmark circles around my Mobile athlon XP, and on top of that, it is definately a foot in the door, like I said, I am not going to pay $400 canadian for a cpu, when I can get a $175 cpu, and use it for 2 months, sell it for $100 and pick up a 1mb Hammer
I dont really care how it runs 3dmark. Sure I'm gona try and get the best score I can but I'm buying it for games and why would I pay more when I wont be able to notice a difference other than maybe 500 3dmarks. I value my money over my 3dmark scores.
