since the Ultra 400 chipsets came out, extreme cooling on the NB hasn't really been necessary at all.

what you want:

DFI NFII Ultra Infinity with bios 12-10
some BH-5
mobile Barton

that should see ya to 270+ fsb with your skill plus vmods. (HIP 6301 for vcore, vdimm mod in mods section)

You'll want quite a high 5V/12V rail in my experience with the DFI. :confused: I have mine @ 3.7V / 5.6V / 13V

What are KT600 chipsets like when it comes to clocking? they are cheap.... My A7N8X died and i need another 400fsb + board to get my 2500 back upto "stock" 2500mhz ;) Since its my 2nd system now, i dont want to spend too much on it, but it still needs to be clocked :)

been looking into getting:
Asus A7V600-X (KT600)
Another Asus A7N8X (although it would be a better rev now and the posibility of reflashing my dead A7N8X)
Abit NF7 v2.0 (nForce2)

I have a week 28 AQUCA 2800+ in my rig. Posted and halfway to windows at 2700 MHz yesterday, on air of course. :toast:

Oh and this board does prime at 240 MHz with 1.65~1.75v vdd ;) so dont worry about NB cooling. A WB wouldnt hurt tho ;)

Do you guys really think that these mobile chips can go higher then a 2.2 Barton?
To late for the mobile anyway, I went and put in my request for a 3200:D
We'll see what happens.
Maybe some 3.2 gig clocking with Xtreme cooling.

i agree that a 3200+ should oc higher than a mobile. mobiles are popular because they get great oc's and all, but for maximum oc overall, i'd say the 3200+ barton

Just got my new KHX3200 BH-5, the best block will do 230MHz cas. 2-2-2-5@2.95v so I recommend these :)

I have Mushkin PC3500 Level II.
It's doing 272MHz with 2-5-2-2 timings on Shuttle NF3 mobo.
This results in the 3rd highest 3D2001 score in the world.

not sure if the 3200s oc that well... ive heard from 2 or 3 people who had the chance to test a bunch of 3200s (working in hardware shops) that they all pretty much maxed out at 2.4ghz on air, the average oc of any 2500+...

again, i think the best chips amd makes are sold as mobiles. whenever they introed a new speed grade they first released it for the desktop and after some time when the yield was good enough took the best of them and released them as the new mobile speed grade...

3200s are not bad cpus, but from what ive heard they are not ocing any better than desktop 2500s...

the chance to get a uber-cpu is MUCH higher buying a mobile xp. not all do well, but at least 50% of them oc better than average desktop cpus, and 1 out of every 4 ocs extraordinaryly well.

my nf7s rev 2.0 did 245@ only 1.4v vdd full stable...i can't go higher because bios 10 didn't more mhz :( and @ 250mhz i can't boot to windows!

i have kingston pc3200 AK2 and have CH-5 right?? my kingston did 233 @ 2-2-2-11 at 2.94v on psu 300w oem! this kingston r ch5 or bh5?? i think they r bh5 because ch5 dont like this timmings!u can explain me??

My last socket A chip was a Barton 3000, it did 3d as high as 2970 on stock MachI. With the better cooling these days I'm sure the 3gig range will be easy.
Maybe if the 3200 doesn't pan out I'll try a mobile.

A lot of of the new CH-5 can do 2-2-2, seems like the quality of ch-5 are increasing:banana:

Go for the ASUS A7N8X.... There is a new Vmod for it...so you can give the cpu 2.3V or more.

My ASUS does 215Mhz FSB without a mod...with a vdd and VDDR mod it will do 254Mh pifast. With DEFAULT NB sink!

You can mod everything on the A7N8X. AND you can give high Vcore + high FSB what the Abit boards most of the time refuse. The DFI boards have no good and stable Vcore. And most of the time you cannot run high Vcore (2.0V+) and high Vdimm at the same time.

I have had 2 8RDA's, 5 NF7-S boards....and now I have an ASUS. I love it!

hmmmm i pretty much have the same history nostra, the 8rda+ a bunch of nf7-s 2.0 boards and finally the a7n8x deluxe rev2.0 i really really love this board and im not sure if i would get another one or a dfi if this one should die... i didnt know about the high vcore/fsb/vdimm probs of the dfi boards... i think i will keep recommending the a7n8x then. a7n8x has the best and most stable voltage circuicity ive seen on a mobo. great mosfets and capacitors! even with 2.15v vcore, 2.2v vdd and 3.8vdimm with modded rails the mosfets only get slightly warm under heavvy load, not like the smoking mosfets on abit and epox boards... :D

the onboard stuff gets buggy above 240fsb no matter what vdd though and stops working above 260fsb. what good is 280fsb+ if you cant use high vcore and vdimm.... my board lets me bench at "only" 255fsb max but i can use any vcore and vdimm i want...

Main problems ive had with my socket A rig is getting high FSB at high CPU clocks...

I think the NF7/S rev2 will be faster than the DFI board, and will "probabably" give a higher CPU clock... I say this merely as ive seen almost nobody on a DFI doing better than 2.7/8 gig at decent FSB.

Once I get around 3gig my FSB falls away... and I havent found a solution yet.
I think once I get my prommy fixed ill just go A64 anyway.

This is on my super Xp-3200 that is one of the few to run 3dmark at 3gig on my MK1 prommy... although that was on 8RDA+ and the FSB sucked.
I never quite got it running right on the NF7, got 3gig easy. but not at 245+ fsb that I can get at 2.8. Then I had the prommy problems and gave it a rest.

Id be interested too see how you get on, especially with what motherboards are best...

Ive yet too see anybody much do 3gig at more than 220fsb (in 3dmark) ... bar maybee LORD.. but I cant for the life of me remember what board he did it on... I have a feeling that was Asus.

But I see you are "only" running 2.7gig... damned impressive for watercooled duron... but very different to a 3gig barton at 2.3+volts.
I think its down to the ammount of voltage I use at 3gig that may cause some of the problems...

lastviking got 10x280 on his lanparty revb... not 100% stable but with a prommie he might get 3ghz with a 250+ fsb.

Considering OPP has a pci IDE card I doubt that'll be much of a problem, except for the video card. 300/6 = 50mhz. still 16mhz under the normal operational frequency of a Promise IDE card. However, 300/3 = 100mhz AGP which is way out of an ATi card's range :doh:
