Zotac gone off the deep end, planning a 2 ghz GTX 680?

I will believe when is see it, but this sounds preposterous. Vince reached 18xx likely cherry picking a bunch of chips on top of modding the voltage components so he could reach this overclock. On top of this, it was ln2.

I think what they are planning is a board that is capable of reaching 2ghz on ln2 or He2. 2 ghz hasn't been reached by any chip regardless of the means, unless you count Nvidia shader clock. No way this passes 1.6 ghz on anything but ln2. A chip that has reached 2ghz even on ln2 is still an accomplishment. Just not the fantasy that is a 2ghz clocked chip on conventional cooling.

My response from my Zotac Rep when i asked if the story was legit was, and I quote, "Yes. No details yet."

So, i'm in about as much know as you... I'll let you guys know when i know more.

Frankly, I think that the GTX 680 has A LOT of overclocking potential especially considering how cost-down the reference cards are. I think companies like EVGA, ASUS and Zotac, MSI and Gigabyte, could do quite a bit of work on the GTX 680.

Considering that I did 1.3GHz on the reference card, I think 1.5GHz on a non-reference card is entirely possible. I know for a fact that the reference card with a few Vmods can do 1.45GHz. Don't ask me how I know :P

Being that this gpu doesn't use that many watts, half that of the 580 almost, I can see if they added some pwm stages and more power hookups, that this might be possible.
This is the usual for low end cards, not mid range ones though, mid range card's don't usually clock up 200%.

Then again the tnt, which was high end in it's day, overclocked over 250%...

Beats me, but a 2ghz ver super clock sounds cool to me.

if they can release them to the public and have these chips stable I will by 4 of them....

K|ngp|n required LN2 and an epower to push a reference GTX 680 to 1900MHz. I eagerly look forward to seeing what Zotac does. It had better not be a 2x GTX 680 where they have a pair of 1 GHz cores for "2 GHz".

Either that or it's a dual card (as it was well noted above).
I don't think any highend chip was ever created that would let its clocks to be doubled in situations other than LN2

what i think would be an interesting conspiracy theory is that they got shared memory to work. by using drivers that takes 2 identical chips and just 'thinks' its running twice the mhz, has merged it to the point that it runs like one chip with twice the speed and not having to duplicate the memory. very unlikely though

Im fully confident that 1.5 Ghz will be possible on air with increased voltage, 2x8 pin connectors and better dual fansink cooling, maybe even 1.6 Ghz.

You're thinking non-reference. Zotac may have a new design in place that is capable of 2K GHz.

Zotac can design the pcb anyway they want they dont design the gpu, if this thing was really capable of much higher clocks consistently then it would have released with 1400mhz core clock and at 600$

it doesn't look so impossible to me, we'll see...anyway if they could pull that off wouldn't the mem frequency be a huge bottleneck?

Zotac will also be introducing their new logo, I found the filename earlier.

Considering nobody here has any idea how cherry picked chips perform while running on a far higher quality PCB with high end volt regulation and other components... it would probably be a good idea to not call BS so quickly since many of you still haven't finished eating that crow served up last week. ;)
Zotac has never been a company who makes outlandish claims that they couldn't live up to. Plus they have absolutely nothing to gain by making this announcement and not having at least some preliminary results pointing at the possibility of such speeds.
That said, Zotac really has their work cut out for them. I'm not sure if they'll hit 2ghz, but i wouldn't put it past them judging from their track record.

K|ngp|n got to 1900MHz on LN2. We're not saying it can't be done period, we're saying it can't be done on air and it seems kind of silly to make a card catered to an incredibly small market.
