I would like to see lower idle power draws or some worthwhile features over wasting time getting something to boot 15-30 seconds faster. If I spend a lot of time starting up its probably because I shouldn't be shutting down in the first place or something is wrong.
people usually mistakenly think that boot times are a good indicator of overall performance. you spend maybe a few seconds waiting to boot, but hours on your computer afterward. boot speed is overrated. time spent booting is the smallest activity you do on your comp.
the five hours after boot is whats important.

the true fix will be to code for SSD. the coding is ridiculously skewed to work with HDD, it could be requesting information in a multithreaded manner, but it doesnt. Also all of the buffering and caching on the OS level is all geared to give 'crutches' to the HDD. the storage has been such a liability forever that the OS is coded around it.
If it were coded to specifically request information from an SSD it would boot in the amount of time it took to process. thats it. maybe a few seconds. Your processor would be @ 100 percent from the second you hit the power to the desktop :)
this is just another form of them coding and 'optimizing' for HDD. so we are continuing to stay on that plane. This actually isnt a step forward.
what really opened my eyes was a IDF presentation on a-list games and performance with SSDs. The coding is so skewed to HDD that there is pre-loaded 'filler' textures that the game uses when the HDD does not stream fast enough. The game already has this filler material loaded into the ram to help the HDD. its just that whole approach to everything on teh system level that is holding SSDs back.
They are building utilities into future games that detect an ssd, then treat it differently, so that it loads, caches differently.
they need to do this at the OS level for a true step forward. think 2-3 second boots, and instant everything. until there is OEM computers headed out the door with SSDs though you will not see it.
one interesting caveat is that winders 8 is supposed to be optimized for tablets/phones, etc. they use predominantly flash based devices, so maybe there will be some progress forward, albeit slow progress.

This. I have several desktops and laptops. Most stay powered off until I need them which is often times less than a couple times a week. There's no point in leaving the thing running for days on end doing nothing but sucking electricity, creating heat, and collecting mounds of dust. When I do turn my PC on, I don't want to wait a slow HDD to try and cough up the OS in a few minutes when my SSD does it in seconds. I've only got a 3.8Ghz 965 and its amazing how much that CPU waits on the data from the storage. I can't imagine paying boatloads of money on a high end Intel setup only to waste all that processing power with slow mechanical HDD's from the stone age.Quote:
