my next high end system will come july 2011 and i will have a budget of 2500 dollars. planning an octo sandy bridge or bulldozer depending on performance and most importantly platform value. i will definately want a couple of 28nm ati or nvidia high end single core as well. somehow im doubtful that ill be able to take octo sandy and xfire/sli in that budget so im more inclined for bulldozer at this moment as long as its less than 15% slower than sandy.
Conroe was impressive when compared against P4 desktops, but Conroe lineage was actually from Banias/Dothan/Yohna -- and in those cases, the improvement was healthy but not nearly as impressive, about 20% gains over those cores.Quote:

Well Conroe's "father" is PIII just like Barcelona's "dad" is K7 :). IMO,intel went with P4 since they expected to have continuous and predictable process node improvement pace and was planning using it to scale the clock speeds of P4 sky high while keeping power draw numbers (and leakage) at bay.This plan failed so they used the next (proven) design and improved it further(and further later on).

They were lower clocked because they were mobile CPUs and were low clock for power reasons. Only a few sites (i found 3 total, 2 are no longer linkable), really compared the Dothan with a desktop, the site below overclocked some Pentium-M CPUs to more along desktop speed, you get a good idea of where they sat relative to P4 and K8, and even at the higher clocks were lower power consumption. I am still perplexed why Intel did not push it into desktop.

I would say it means that in case of AMD's Bulldozer performing above Intle's expectations they still have room to add at least 2 additional cores to fight it back. In other words this is Intel's plan B.Quote:
