Who ever said you have the right to expect a company to make low end items that can be clocked to equal the high end items so that people won't buy the high end items?
Was it nice to be able to buy a i7-920 and get the speeds of the 975?
Yup,you bet it was but it's not a given or even our right to expect it.
Now I like to OC my systems just as much as anyone else but I take what exists and do the best I can with it.
Bottom line performance to me with SB will be how it compares to previous generations in pure computational power at a given speed.
Oh,and to answer your comment,I don't sleep on cash unless it's pennies that fell out of my pocket into the bed!:D

wow. bobcat's graphics power is the equivalent of a 5450 which is almost as fast as core i5 2400. most of the power from the 5450 is not the actual chip otherwise a 5870 would consume >400 watts.:eek: the problem with these low power cards is that most of the power (and cost) is VRAM and PCB components. the chip itself is probably mostly PCI and IO logic which is wasteful in terms of die area/power. when integrated on die this problem disappears.

comparing the 45nm graphics chip on clarkdale to sandy b has revealed some interesting information. sandy bridge has custom designed parts where as the 45nm gfx chip has none for the core. also out of 124mm2, 50mm2 of the clarkdale gfx chip is I/O, the other 75mm2 is for core logic, out of that 53mm2 is for gfx. the graphics core in sandy bridge is ~38mm2.

i highlighted any structure (for SB) that has been custom designed. note the SRAM arrays in the top. there are 12 large ones with 8 structures each.

it's ~ 9mmx5mm with pads on one side and some other logic which is approximately 7 mm2.

I'm impressed by the IGP, even more if this is not the fastest version they will have,

but the overclock limitations :down:
if you have the cheapest version without the unlocked multi and without turbo you are left without options? while you can run a clarkdale g6950 at 4.5ghz...
this "100mhz" reference clock, limited OC comment doesn't help, I'm at this moment using a cheap overclocked e5200, it seems this kind of CPU (really cheap with lots of OC potential) is dead.

Holy crap, that's only 6 EUs on that IGP? The 12 EU option will completely end snide remarks about "Intel IGPs" :)

That clicking you hear is the sound of Llano being erased from AMD roadmaps. :D It might beat 2C SB IGP, but not by much, it looks like, and its CPU will be blown out...

Nice L3 measurement, but I wonder on the L1 & L2. Going back to the canardPC leak, which has been pretty good in the past, they had the L1 latency down to 3, L2 down to 9...

Maybe Dr. Who can make a cryptic comment.... ;)

And those IPC gains are coming despite an L3 of 6MB vs 8MB in the i7 880 !

6-8 core Sandy will be a beast, kinda scary that these are the midrange models only.

Next year will be a very good year to upgrade one's system.

Yes "cheap" overclocking is dead, a e5200/G9650 is not cheap but dirt cheap in my opinion... :p

Seems the bean counters got the hand again on the steering wheel. While not neglecting the enthusiast crowd (S2011), they basically say if you want the performance you have to pay (a certain price) for it.

Im sure technical limitations also played a roll on the locking, and im sure we will see the same on amd also, when they start to integrate more parts in there cpu. (pci-e controller, clock generator)

But for 95% of the possible customers that pretty much irrelevant anyway. If they buy a new pc they get a very nice performance boost and they don't care about overclocking.

Except for the very low-end, where Atom lives.

Hoping the enthusiast chips this coming gen will simply rock. If these are any preview of that, I think we'll be happy, so long as OCing options are left open (Intel, don't screw us!).

The IGP results are interesting for a super small lan rig if you're using a 15" monitor b/c you travel with it.

Maybe not for myself (main reason being this am2+ socket just wont die ;-) ,but ive build quite a few systems for clients /friends family around intel chips, mainly in the core2 era, getting a cheap FAST chip was pretty easy with intel then, so the price to performance ratio was solid.During phenom I fiasco i havent recommended even once this chip.

Of course i cant EXPECT getting low end chip that i can OC.
However, ocing for this relatively small (when you take into account all pc users) community isnt any big impact on intels financials, far from it, it looks like theyre doing ok finance wise, dont they ?
I as a consumer cant be happy by limiting my options by a provider of cpus.Thats reasonable isnt it ?
BTW i wouldn count i920 as being cheap ;-), most of the world is much poorer than US.People often forget that.
Intels tactics is just pure money extraction, no sentiment anymore for anyone.In a normal enviroment competetition would prevent this ,but currently there is none.
In summary, i cant expect any corporation to do what i want, however that doesnt mean i just have to roll over and do what im told, im no apple user dammit :P.
It just seems weird to me that someone on a forum like xs actually defends putting limits and blocks on OC.

Worst case scenario is AMD sees what intel has done and does it itself, because it would be better for them too.
Just like MS saw what apple did with its iphone and is cutting functionality from new phone operating system.
How boring and clone like world is gonna become if everything is gonna be stock/standard ?

Im flabbergasted by cheerfull acceptance for limiting overclocking here

i still get lost with things.

i do know that what we get this xmas is 80SPs (ontario)
and Llano is built more for desktop, but also works for medium to high powered laptops and will have a gpu good enough to be called a gaming laptop.

im not going to try and assume if bobcat is ontario, cause i honestly forget lol
