Samsung announces the EcoGreen F4 1.5TB & 2TB hard drives

Um dude, 2TB drives boot just fine. It's 3TB that can't boot from regular BIOS boards... And why would you buy a Velociraptor when WD Caviar Black 2TB is faster in anything but raw access time? For less money. Yet still faster than most "green" and "eco" drives. And 5 years warranty. What's stupid is using super expensive SSD just for a boot drive. That's something i'll never understand. I'll go SSD when i'll be able to use SSD for everything.

And what's the most hilarious statement is that Black's are "power hogs". Says a guy with 3x GTX480 in his system... Even 6x 2TB drives like in your case use as much as a graphic card from 10 years ago. In short, does anyone really care about drives consumption (apart from those Eco/Green nonsense freaks)!?

and considering how many people (even here) are now aware of how much power they are using, it's now becoming such a large part of the market that a company COULDN'T ignore them without serious impact to their market share.

Sorry, what!? Have read that like 10 times and i still couldn't make any sense out of it. All the eco nonsense is really ridiculous in 2 cases. Hard drives with power consumption of just ~10W (and that aren't server class where you expect clusters of them and where differences might even realistically show) and "green" graphic cards that eat 170W+ and are called "green", just because they use 5W less than the casual non green version. Pure marketing nonsense.

5400RPM? Meh. Is there really that much power savings to be worth the slower speed? If it is like 1W then whatever....

I'm getting the 2TB F4EG drive this week. I can see how it performs. I bought a 7200 rpm Hitachi 2TB drive b/c I wanted fast start up etc.

I store all of my data on a file server, so even when i queue up music to play or watch a movie, that drive has to turn on, spin up and move the data over cat5e. My old 1.5tb F2 was painfully slow to start up.

I get why people might want performance drives for data. Waiting 10 seconds when you have an SSD for OS just hurts.

Btw, I payed $89 for my 2TB sammy drive. This 1.5TB should be less..

Are they short stroking it or something?
