i doubt the dust would "magically" travel there

Whoops, forgot sarcasm doesnt work well on the interwebz
anyone have an ETA on any of these new psu's?
You have to remember with increased efficiency, there's less heat being made in the psu. Also, according to some of jonny guru's tests, efficiency actually goes up in his hotbox.

Seasonic X-560 560W Review
Seasonic comes to us again today with another model in the X Series lineup - the X-560. Like the other members of the family, this unit boasts 80 Plus Gold certification, full modularity, and a single 12V rail almost as powerful as the total rated capacity of the unit. It is also currently the lowest powered unit in the line that has a fan, with its 460W and 400W little brothers operating completely without a fan. Let's see how it does....
Negative air pressure has better cooling potential but sucks in a lot of dust and fibers. Swapping to positive air pressure helps keep dust out. Anyways, I do like the fanless designs. I'm far more enthused by the Seasonic lineup (especially X-650 and X-750's currently available). If I wanted a nice cheap quality Seasonic I'd look at the SS-750HT & SS-850HT (80 PLUS Silver and like $110-120 on Egg).
That fanless 460 watts will be my next PSU. I can't stand noise or fans any more. Xtreme silent will be my next project, 1DB is my goal :)
So I already got a x-750 and it does a wonderful job for my current setup but I'm thinking that if I ever want to upgrade to dual 6970 (currently single 5970) I might be short on power, with the overclock and all. Finally there's a 1000w that's worth my time :D
The 450W Silverstone NightJar has been out for years and got very nice reviews....why all the interest in the passive models....what new do they bring to the table?
And what is wrong with let say 560w? :) Fanless most of the time and if you have a good case it will stay like that. This could apply to 400W/460W fanless model as if you don't have good air ventilation, you psu will heat more etc etc...
Nothing wrong with these....they look great. It just seemed like maybe ppl thought this was the first time there was a decent fanless model (based on the 1st few posts).
Nothing wrong, indeed. That passive 460W model seems quite interesting. Should prove useful in HTPC etc..
i still dont understand the passive cooled power supply. maybe its because ive never really had a silent system, but i sure cant hear my psu's fan over any of the other fans in my system. i rather have the x 650 which gives me more power should i need it and is cheaper. thats just me though
The case fans will fill the fanless PSU with dust if not configured properly.
A PSU with fan draws air from the case to the outside (= less dust in the PSU),
while a fanless PSU will act as a vent for all other case fans (= possibly more dust in the PSU, see below).
Now if you have more air coming out than going in, like more exhaust than intake, you'll get negative pressure in the case and the fanless PSU will act as an intake = fills with dust.
If you have more air going into the case than out you'll get positive pressure in the case, which pushes air in the case through the fanless PSU and to the outside.
Seasonic X-Series SS-460FL: 460 Watts of Fanless Power

With a price of $160 online the Seasonic X-Series SS-460FL is as expensive as some previously tested 1000W power supplies. However, it offers the best performance we've seen and a fully modular connector panel. We've never seen a PSU that has no real weaknesses in our testing, and the worst thing we can say about the SS-460FL performance is that it only posted 80% efficiency at 10% load (which is still good).
If you want to have an absolutely silent PSU that can run at high loads and you don't care about cost, the SS-460FL delivers. What we can't readily quantify is the long-term stability and performance after months or years of use. The SS-460GL is a prestige object that most will find unnecessary, but it's still an awesome product. For all other costumers the SS-560KM is nearly silent through ~50% load and passive at low loads, and it represents a more reasonable selection for midrange PCs. After all, why bother with a silent PSU if you're still running fans on the CPU and GPU?
