ATI releases its own line of GDDR memory!

AMD wouldn't care if those memory chips are used for intel or nVidia GPU's or any other brand. In fact before intel's Pentium II CPU you had 1 socket (mainboard and chipset) for any x86 CPU.
If you want to design a cpu for AM3, or whatever AMD socket, you can do that without a problem. To be even more accurate, if nVidia really did design a CPU it will most probably be a AMD socket CPU.
Hypertransport for example can be used by anyone who'd like to use it. So I don't think AMD would tell manufactures where they can and can't use those memory chips. And besides, I've had enough mainboards for AMD cpu with intel branded chips on it. So I don't get the big deal here.

If I were ATI, I'd feel insulted...maybe ATI should incorporate a hardware check of the GPU into their memory and refuse to work with non-ATI GPUs...:D

But the attitude of such a move would be too NVidia-esque...something that we could use less of.;)

somebody confirmed to me that ati indeed bought a large batch of these memory chips to get a discount and then sold it to their partners.
they do this to help their partners, and as such, they dont mind what their partners do with the chips, at all...

This is why I admire ATI as a company...their attitude is 180° different from NVidia. They are relaxed and understand that helping the industry and end users is in their best interest and ensures their long-term success, instead of looking for new and creative ways to screw them, as NVidia does. ATI recognizes that their open and relaxed attitude fosters amity, instead of animosity. NVidia feels that the industry is there to serve them and the end user should feel privileged to be their customer. This attitude is persistent and deeply entrenched at NVidia, and will lead to NVidia's downfall if an about face isn't performed very soon;)

So if they now produce their own GDDR, when will i be able to buy ATI branded DDR3 sticks? That would be sick!

The memory is intended for the low end ATI parts such as HD 5450 but not exclusively, so MSI used them for the GT 210 as well. The ATI 23BY2387SA02 are DDR2 chips rated at 800Mhz.

They don't produce their own GDDR, they just've just bought a huge number of chips and marked them as ATI-made. :)
Only a few of their chosen partners who assemble and sell graphics cards got these. Besides, GDDR is different from DDR! :up:

yeah but cheap cards use ddr2 and ddr3 and not gddr afaik... im not sure, but these might actually be DDR2 and not GDDR2, in that case, somebody could actually make some really weird memory sticks out of this :lol:
i wonder if they are decent chips... i guess they are cheap cr4p tho seing as they are used for entry level vgas... :P
