The 4 pin would be + - RPM PWM.
The point in pwm is the pulse the pump, so instead of screaming at 4000rpm's, it would go in a wave from 4000 -> 1400 -> 4000 -> 1400, as the cpu header emits the PWM pulse.
How he had it connected was 2 was a molex, or looked like a molex with standard + - , and the other 2 looked like RPM and PWM headers that went directly to your cpu motherboard fan header.
Thats how you controlled the PWM.
