I was always a huge Seagate supporter until their massive firmware issues, as was the forum in general; and that was only a few years ago. At the same time, WD was regarded with much less optimism, excepting their enterprise drives and Raptor line. Really I think a lot of it depends on what drive, I don't think it's fair to compare vendors. For example, enterprise drives from Seagate surely have a much lower failure rate than high-end consumer drives from WD. Heck, Western Digital has even split their own drives into the black and blue segments which each have different MTBF's.

I've had good experiences with all of my hard drives (Hitachi, Seagate, WD) but still prefer WD over the others.
