Don't start anything with me, did i EVER mention that was just a driver implementation? No I didn't.

I said that 785G is the same core with higher clocks and added features. 785G is still based on R600 that is a fact... If it was a R700 GPU it would've had 80 shader processorers. So it is a R600 GPU with higherclocks and some features added on-die.

But I do fully agree with you calling the 785G a re-branded 780G is wrong, cause it is wrong since it's a reworked die - altough it's still based on R600 40SP core.

RV7x0 is RV6x0 with more shaders, a die shrink, efficiency improvements, and new features. So, 780G -> 785G is as big a jump as 3870 -> 4870 in terms of architecture.

AGAIN, read the Computex articles on the 785G, they MENTION that it is based on the HD 4200. Is there a possibility that HD 4200 may have 40 shaders? Yes, but highly unlikely and only possible if ATI wants to have the HD 4300 series with the 80 Shaders. (HD 4300 and HD 4330 already have 80 Shaders).

Think of it this way, the 3870 had 320 Shaders, and the 4670 has 320 shaders. So not all HD 4xx0 cards need to have more shaders than the HD 3xx0 cards for them to be part of the new architecture.

we can argue about architecture origins, and depending on the POV anyone can be right or wrong.

Yeah R600 is the "big daddy" of them all, but each GPU after it had significant changes so it's hard to put them all in the same basket...

eg. R600 didn't have UVD unit, didn't have DX10.1 support, didn't have hardware antialiasing resolve unit... it was heavy shader behemoth... hell only common thing that R600 and RV610 had was "6" in their name ;)

Nvidias new line of mobile GPUs has DX10.1 should we call it GT300?

785G is built upon a R600 deriviation with a few added features, it is not R700 - and yes I know R700 is an architecture built of R600.

It is possible we will see an "R700" IGP built on 40nm, or 32nm which has 1 block of 80 shaders, or possibly they'll skip R700 and go directly for a Evergreen IGP depending on how that architecture is built but I'd guess those blocks would consist of 100 shaders. The issue AMD has now in making a R700 IGP is TDP issues since AMD doesn't want to exceed 15W TDP on their mainstream IGP, so it's better to refresh the current one.

R600/HD2900 and RV670/HD3870 used clusters of 64 shaders if I recall not 40.

Hmm I am quite sure it was 40... I know R700 is 80, but R600 should be 40 considering all the budget cards that was released with 40/80 shaders for desktop.
