As I recall the 2900XT did rather well in 3DMarks having a few WRs under it's belt thanks to LN2 but never really became a bestseller.

Sometimes it's hard to realize that such huge companies do indeed have real economists because either we are missing something massive or they've been smoking white widow for the last months...
I'll let them answer that. :p:
I am in no way insinuating that an HT-enabled Core i5 will face tough competition from a Phenom, because the simple fact is that it won't.
That does not mean, though, that AMD's products do not excel in certain applications, including higher LN2 clocks.

Why do you think that half of the top overclockers and a good deal of all the overclocking events have sponsors? It isn't becasue they're nice people, although I'm sure they all are. Its becasue its marketing. And the return is paid off. Watercooling is one area that is getting more mainstream. And there is money in it, regardless of the percentages. So when Jimmy the former Dell nOOb asks that he wants a new PC built or some advice and asks his geeky friend, he'll be influenced in turn by the geek who was here fapping at OMFGZ 7Ghz on whatever board.. using whatever ram. whatever.
i am happy core i5 delayed :D
more money for AMD :D
Yes you make a good point. The 2900XT did well in 3dMark. It done better in 3dmark than you would have expected it to do in Games. I had a 2900XT and I sold it because of driver issues. The guy I sold it to knew the driver issues, and its comparable lagging in games but just wanted it foremost to pair with his other X2900XT for benching.
Lynnfield will not be called Core i5

COMPUTEX — We started our Computex marathon this morning by paying a visit to Intel's Francois Piednoel, who showed us a desktop PC and a notebook based on upcoming mainstream Core i7 derivatives. Piednoel also let us snap a picture of an eight-core Nehalem-EX processor in the flesh.
Let's start with the desktop PC. That system contained a quad-core, eight-thread Lynnfield CPU, and it was running some video and photo editing apps.
Piednoel noted that the "Core i5" name concocted by the rumor mill is simply off—the final product will be called something else entirely, although he wasn't at liberty to say what.
Lynnfield's biggest strengths compared to the Core i7 should be lower CPU and motherboard pricing coupled with still-strong quad-core, eight-thread performance. That said, Piednoel told us the new CPU's Turbo Boost feature will also have much greater potency than the Core i7 implementation. That means if the processor's power use stays below a certain threshold, individual cores will be able to clock themselves much higher in order to speed up single-threaded tasks.
[QUOTE]COMPUTEX 2009: Several sources at Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers have said that Lynnfield is going to be a dream to overclock with early samples hitting 5GHz... on air cooling.
Intel has remained mum on Lynnfield’s details, but its partners are very keen to talk about it. The Turbo mode, which dynamically adjusts the CPU frequency to deliver the maximum performance for the given thermal design power, will “add something north of 500MHz” to the CPU’s default clock speed in single threaded applications said an Intel spokesperson.
Our sources indicated that you are, in fact, likely to see an extra 600MHz for free in single threaded apps. This means the rumoured high-end 3.2GHz Lynnfield chip will hum along at 3.8GHz in some workloads, which is much more than the current Core i7 processors, which get an extra 200MHz or so for free when there’s power to spare.
This obviously means great things for overclocking and contrary to other reports we’ve read on the ‘net, it looks like Lynnfield is going to hit those 1GHz+ overclocks we’ve seen on the current Core i7 chips because 5GHz is “easily achievable,” said one source. Another said that they’d hit 5GHz “with very little effort,” which could make for some exciting times if you’re a cost-conscious enthusiast.
Obviously, we’ll reserve our final judgement until we’ve looked at how retail CPUs are overclocking, but these early whispers are looking promising./QUOTE]

Holy Cow!
Did P55s ditch crossfire?
Nope, 8x + 8x for Crossfire, but it has some issues with SLI afaik.

Intel Lynnfield : 5 GHz on air-cooling
Hope that's true :D
I'm willing to bet that news sites have an impact (THG particularly). People read it, see a product is doing well then go ahead and when someone else asks "what do you recommend?" that person will be influenced by particular articles. And heck I feel most people are influenced by brands especially processor and graphics card brands and will base their entire computer decision on those two parts.
I'm sure you've overheard expressions such as "AMD is for gamers, Nvidia is for gamers, Nvidia works better with intel" etc etc.
So Lynnfield won't be called Core i5?
Awww... What a pity. I love that name already. :p:
maybe yes 5GHz but only post and supepri (the same as D0 i7)

Actually the "rumor" changed

Intel Answers: The future of Core i7 920
...
First, the Core i7 920. Despite being told quite the opposite just last week, Intel vehemently reaffirmed the i7 920 will still exist for the foreseeable future. However, there was absolutely no commitment to a timescale

i have a core 8400. im not sure whether to upgrade towards an i5 or i7. ill tell you this, whichever gets usb 3.0, sata 3.0, and pci-e 3.0 into their mobos first wins!! something tells me im going to have to wait almost a year for all that in one mobo. oh well, and if you could throw in a lucid logix chip in there as well ill be a very happy guy :)
