Just a small headsup. None of these will work with DDR3. 925 and 945 will.
I wasn't even aware that there was a AMD DDR3 board on the market yet, so who cares. These chips were intended to be used with AM2+ when they were released, I thought DDR3 IMC were due out much later this year.
There is an AM3 DDR3 board announced.
XS AMD section had a little discussion where we suspected that even old Phenom 1s had DDR3 support in their MCs... just that AMD probably delayed the platform.
We shall wait and see what's the outcome, though.

AMD has the advantage right now, they know that many users of sb600-sb750 have this upgrade path which is cheaper than moving to any new platform Intel has. So if they want the fastest AMD has to offer this is the price you will pay. They are betting that many will rather just upgrade a cpu to improve their current system performance than to have to pay $400+ to move into a base Intel system.
Also want to mention that I paid $235 for my 9950BE the day it was released so this is pretty much about a $50 increase from their last top end cpu to the current.......but once again alot of improvements are going on here right off the bat stock clocks have moved from 2.6ghz to 3.0ghz so that in itself comparing clockspeed/price is a warranted price increase.
What percentage of the market do you think have a sb600-sb750? mabey 0.2%? So that is a advantage that 0.2% (probably less) MIGHT upgrade there cpu?Quote:

but we are talking about retail prices of just the cpu......not purchasers of complete systems. If you are going to talk about people who build computers for themselves and are looking into this cpu I would say that this is also a number that AMD would not rely on to make the bulk of their money........their money will be in prebuilt systems like dell compaq or whatever other companies are out there offering systems like that.Quote:

Well with better higher clocked alternatives the pre built places like dell will be more likely to pick up some amd setups.

The upgrade argument works. I have some AM2+ mobos sitting around. Dropping $230 (assuming that's the price and the 920 OC's well) is good, thought not great. Its cheaper than building an intel board and going q6600.
AMD better do some hardcore commercialization to get this out there for anyone who ONLY buys Intel. That's where they should be relying. Upgraders alone won't cut it.
I know a guy who only buys intel, but upgrades maybe ever 5 years, which IMO is crazy slow. He wants a q6600 b/c of the legendary speed, but I think he should get this, just b/c of the price / performance ratio. I think you're crazy to get a q6600 at this point just due to the mobo costs if you want one that'll OC it well. Plus to get to 3.6ghz, you'll probably need h2O (at least thats what I've heard about the current q6600 chips, they don't OC as well).
3.6ghz on air beats my q6600 on water. It would effectively be just as fast and air cooled.
yes i already disproved that somewhere. the ddr3 controller was implemented on the original k10 but it was disabled through fuses until am3 comes out when it will be turned on. as cooper says its all in that guide along with a lot of good reading.Quote:
