It would have been better if this card was named GTX 265, GTX 260 216 cores is ridiculous.

Why ? Its the same thing. 55nm, that's not much of an improvement to call it anything else...

GTX 265 Core 216 would've been better, but NVIDIA is choosing not to publicize their move towards the 55nm fabrication in GTX 200 Series GPUs. They still want to capitalize on their 65nm stock while it lasts.

You both misunderstood my argument which I did not specify that much. Forget about the nm nomenclature.

Plain English:

We have 2 GTX 260 versions, 1 that contains 192 cores and 1 that contains 216 cores. The first version was named right GTX 260 192 cores. The second version which contains 216 cores should have been named GTX 265.

Why would it have been better? Nothing about the product is changing - same features and same performance.

I agree with Metroid, it would have made a lot more sense to name the 216 core version GTX 265 than it is to name the 55nm shrink GTX 265.

Yes I know that. But since the Core 216 has already been named, it's time to think what NVIDIA could have done this time around. They could have indeed named the 55nm parts GTX 265.

But yes, if this were still June and I were a product manager for NVIDIA, I would have had the lineup as follows:

Oh well, at least 55nm production is going to finally start taking off.

Nvidia is making EVGA and other retailers, box these things the same way the regular 216's are boxed. Nvidia does'nt want everyone to not buy the 65nm parts and only buy the 55nm parts. I can understand why too. They would be left with a huge back stock of the old version.

Fortunately for those of us who know what to look for, such as model number, will know which one we are getting. but nvidia wants to get rid of the 65nm parts to the people who basicly, don't know the difference and don't really care.

Nvidia must figure they'll be able to relieve 65nm stock with just the GTX 260 then, because the GTX 280 55nm will carry the new GTX 285 name. At least as far as we know.

They're available already?

The "GeForce" name originated from a contest held by Nvidia in early 1999. Called "Name That Chip", the contest called out to the public to name the successor to the RIVA TNT2 line of graphics boards. There were over 12,000 entries received and 7 winners received a RIVA TNT2 Ultra graphics board as a reward

There's no separate GTX 260 and GTX 280 65nm stock though. Any 65nm GT200 can simply be sold as a GTX 260 216. So they can kill the 65nm GTX 280 anytime they want.

now that these are out i can't wait till jan 8 for the 295's. I like the new look of the cards as well

55nm 216 core cards will drop in price, but should be a good value when it falls near the 200$ mark. I am eager to see how much more head room the new cores have.
