My guess:
The Pentium Pro had the codename P6, and Intel have said that Nehalem is the biggest improvement (or something) since Pentium Pro. So that makes the number 7 obvious.
Now they dont want to mix things up with the old Pentium brand by using P so they use i as in intel instead.
i7 as in intel generation 7 (which is not completely true), or i786.

i7 is not bad at all, and at least it's not some stupid word. i7 is just as stupid as i386 was.

3: pentium 1

maybe they figure after pentium all the core and core2duo chips fall under revision 6, so next would be 7 for Nehlem

The original Pentium was P5, and PP, P2, P3 and PM are all based on the P6 architecture.
C(1) and C2 have much in common with P6, but it also have many improvements.
to be honest, I dont really care if they will call it I7, nehalem, core3 or gfdrstdfg, if the performance lives up to expectations I'll buy it.

The thing is that this number only says how old the CPU model is, not how it is related to other models. It's not like the E6600 is closer to the PD 945 than the E8600, just because of the numbers?

I think Core 3 would not work very well... but Core 4 sounds nice xP. Core i7? Makes me think of Cory 7... "And here's the brand new Intel Cory 7!" Meh--doesn't seem to be a good naming choice. Oh well--so long as it kicks ass, I'm sure many of us will buy it. So long as it says Intel, many regular people will buy it too.
