How many HD4870 still work?

something that might help with rumors and other forums misinterpreting and spreading misinformation...

out of the reported dead cards..
this may help clarify much of the confusion people are having here; and spreading rumors at other forums.
which category does the failed card fall into.

1. flashed bios; card died.
2. flashed bios and oc'ed; card died
2. did not flash bios, and did not oc; card died.
3. did not flash bios, ccc oc'ed; card died

if this info was all in one spot for the dead cards, I think yall could avoid much of the rumors and jokes...
maybe someone could start a new "official failed 4870 thread" with a OP master list of the cards failing with some easy to follow data criteria as a master list

I would, but I don't have a 4870... so really doubt I'd keep current with the master list like it should be updated

I bet thats NVidia's paid agents that are spreading those nasty rumors!

Everyone who had their cards die on them touched the bios. You can oc the card through CCC. Just keep it there until some better oc tools come out with less risk of damage.

@Mike, the card does not die from CCC ocing, only from bios flashing.

$300 is not cheap when the card has an expected lifetime of less than one week.

Actually, W1zzard is already on the problem and is looking to configure the bios to restart the cards, or at least allow safe overclocks.

The problem seems to be the qimonda ram which, due to Quad channel interface, is not taking overclocks very well.

As one member mentioned, the ram overclocks 4mhz for every 1mhz overclock (900 -> 1000Mhz oc is actually 3600 -> 4000Mhz)

The point is that there is no garantie that a flashed bios will hold and these cards are still new. We have to wait for tested flashing programs and please guys do not reflash your bios until this problem is resolved. 300 usd ain´t cheap but when you flash your modded bios that means 300 usd is more or less like peanuts for you. Rumors = Nvidia fans at work:shocked:

Most likely its the memory if anything. GDDR5 is still new technology that ati rushed out for their launch, so its not too surprising. My bet is that the memory is over heating so try turning up your fan speeds a bit and see if that helps since all the 4850s are fine

The ones that died are only cards with flashed bios so far. I presume the mem is not the problem but the tool they use in flashing their modded bios gets messed up:yepp:

Thanks for clearing that up for those who didn't know. Did you confirm yourself that the people who said they did not flash their cards are lying?

And if it's the overclock, you're saying the max oc off ccc overdrive is still safe?

has anyone just use rivertune to tune up the fan only? Will that kill the 4870? Or use rivertune to OC the card does that consider flashing the bios?

gotta agree on one point: ceevee did nothing else but giving a couple of examples from guys who killed their cards with bios mods, and these examples really exist, even if they represent only a few percentage of users. So I can't see anything wrong about ceevee's post. He got aggressive when he got really attacked by ATI fanboys :D. Nothing wrong on his side: he acquired a couple of NVs so what? He's happy with them so what ?

Also saying that the few users who saw their cards die after OC (from bios flash OK, not CCC) is not relevant compared to the thousands of other ATI buyers doesn't make more sense than saying that the tens of posts about 790i chipset corruption issues @ XS wouldn't make sense either. So there's a big "potential" issue with the 4000 series, the cards are much better than expected, but let's admit it, the issue exist, and from what I've read it's GDDR5 related. So let's just be patient, use the "fan fix script" in the meantime, and see how it goes when either a new bios or new drivers are released. Most likely the next drivers will fix the temp issues for everyone. If there's really a ram issue, that's another story...

wow there needs to be a designation of people with 4870s lol, there is so much info that is not true going around, there are quite a few cards that have died from nothing related to flashing bios overclocking or anything, they were at stock.

I believed that to, but since there aren't more threads popping up, or just some new cases every hour, I'm starting to think about a> a few melons or b> user errors and not wanting to admit it.

That's why this thread is a great idea, I just would have done it as a private poll and ask the people in the opening post to PM me if they done something particular before the death. It's all good, just difrrent ways to get to the same goal.

I've been running mine since Friday afternoon with no problems. No bios flash, did the fan fix through profiles in CCC, and have OC'd the card through CCC. I love it so far...

i'm going to be gettign 3 with my BB discount but after seeing this i bet its just some ram issues BIOS mod+vdram mod will probably make them run fine

Those that have flashed the BIOS have likely flashed to an incorrectly read and truncated BIOS. The ones that I've seen have a 61K filesize, but the correct production BIOS filesize is 128K.
