safe volts for 24/7 45nm 8xxx?

I initially had this chip up to 1.50 but didn't take it any higher then that, I've had it for 8 days and it's been running pretty much 24/7 since then. I am down to 1.43-1.44 idle and 1.39-1.40 under load. I haven't seen any problems in degradation but then I am only at 4014mhz on the CPU, perhaps it's the combo of voltage and speed that's doing the wolfdales in quickly?

I have written an email to the author of CrystalCPUID to see if I can get a version that will let me control my multiplier and voltage from the command line, right now it works in the gui, but not from the command line... It would be nice to have riva tuner clock up and down for me so I don't have to stress the cpu 24/7 with the voltage.

You're clocking your cpu at 4014Mhz . Do you know the minimum stable voltage for this frequency ?

Also ... One more user reported degradation today . That makes 9 so far .

My Q748A141 8400 needs 1.39v under load, to be prime stable @ 4.0ghz. Will check it out and report back in a week.

That is the minimum on my E8400. :( It seems I didn't get a good one out of the batch. I think my CPU starts needing lots more power over 3.8ghz. At 426x9 ~3.8 I can complete orthos and prime for at least an hour on 1.35v. Once I start heading for the 4ghz line it starts needing VCore to reach stability.

I can boot into windows fine, run my applications, but as soon as I goto Prime it, it makes it about 10 seconds and fails. I have also tried adjusting my CPU VTT and GTLREF settings up and down 1% at a time from 55%-75%. No dice..

Perhaps I've got a bum chip here?

I've got some news ...

One owner of an E8500 RMA'd today his processor because it didn't work at default clocks. He reported degrading . 20 days CPU . All i know is that in the bios he had all the settings to AUTO (maximus formula) . Maximus motherboards give high voltages when you select auto . Don't know though anything more. I don't know this guy very well (it's a user from another forum i first met today)

Also , regarding one watercooled E8500 . It was playing nice at 1.34V for about 2 weeks now .Almost every day we were testing it's stability with orthos & OCCT . No problems so far. 3 days ago the owner put 1.39V and o/ced a bit more . Yesterday orthos & OCCT failed at these new clocks. We don't know anything about benchmarks . I should say also that when the CPU was brand new we tested it at 1.53V for 2 days (1st degrade noticed there) and immediately we lowered the vcore to 1.34V i mentioned in the start.

I'm scared now. Stock for me!




.......not. but I wont go above 1.4v with my QX9650. :D



second thought, maybe 1.3625. :P



EDIT: Can anyone confirm that these degradations are limited to the cpu and not high volts on the chipsets themselves as well?

After a week, still stable.

I had brief scare my cpu was degrading (especially since it has been stress testing since I got it), but turns out I have "flaky" settings in between orthos stopping and orthos stable. Completely different than OCing my E6850.

My E6850 usually if orthos stopped at 10-20 mins, raise notch would make it few hours, one more notch would be stable (rarely stop at 10 hrs needing one additional notch).

However my E8400 for example 4.05Ghz, 9x450.
1.306 - orthos stopped 11 mins
1.312 - orthos stopped 4 hours
1.318- orthos runs anywhere from 3 to 11 hours, never get stop message, but either get system reboot, orthos program shuts off with no error message, orthos says critical error and must shut down. I made it 10 hours first run, 3 hours second...was worried til made it 11 hours after that.
1.325 - same flaky crap, random reboots/crashes running orthos
1.331 - same flakiness
1.3375 - two 15 hour stable orthos runs....(took me a while to pin down to cpu...kept thinking it must be something else)

I get the same flakiness in between orthos stopping settings and stable settings going to 4.1 as well.

First off, I am not advocating 15 hour orthos runs. I might be perfectly stable for everything but orthos at 4.05 for any of those settings at 1.318 and above, I dont know.

Also, I have no doubt that some are getting degradation.

But just wanted to mention one other thing to look for (though could just be my cpu) is highly variable orthos runs at certain settings in between "stable" and orthos stopping, at least when above 4.0.

Also, I will recheck my runs at 4, 4.05 and 4.1 in couple weeks and see if any degradation.

I ran my chip (E8200) with 1.52 vcore across it for 3 days. Have since lowered it because of everyone claiming degrading effects above 1.4Vcore. The temps never exceeded 60 degrees and it was prime stable. I may run it at 1.52 till it dies (or not) just to prove a point.

My QX9650 was doing 4200MHz at 1.4v at 100% load(crunching) unless I'm benching and it's been fine for 3 weeks now. My E8400 was fed 1.5v for 4.6GHz on aircooling for 3 days and I didn't notice any degradation. Soon I'll be benching it again and I'll map the voltage/frequency range of the processor to see how it responds and then check back in a week or two. I think this might be exaggerated a bit though, while this is a new manufacturing process I can't remember any previous generation of chips instantly degrading (besides maybe those really old P4s?).

NEVER go abover 1.6v with Wolfdales. My E8500(ES) went pear shaped above that, so did a Retail version of a friends. I was using SS, he was using custom water.

QX9650 can use 1.7v fine.
The Q9550 was optimal at 1.35v.

bump..... I've been running this 8400 at 1.43v stable @ 4.3 for about a month now on liquid no problems what so ever, vid 1.125. no ruined or degraded cpu yet!

Same here.... 1.425v for months now .... I think we're all ok....

Is this 1.4+ ratings at IDLE or under LoAD?

I have a really good chip right now and its almost stable at 4.4ghz on 1.360 volts idle/ 1.320 load but I am way to scared to push farther
