Skin today's dualcores and I bet it spanks. Has to do with IHS well, spreading the heat. Gets outside the contact patch.

More than likely a caps clearance issue.

If you can't slide a piece of paper freely between ALL the caps and the stepped portion of the block base, then it's going to be a caps clearance issue.

I solved this myself by customising up a sturdy back-plate out of a spare G5 mounting plate and some thin MDF. Temperatures improved markedly.

One of the mods I'm having done to the G7 to send to Scott is a greater cap clearance.

I designed the stepping to clear the caps (for both G5 & G7), but with a high mounting pressure the board and even with back-plates flex enough that the clearances go to zero and the block starts to tilt on the CPU.

hahaha, I was only pointing out that in my experience, the jets on the G5 plug a lot more easily than the G4's.

Cathar: what kind of temp difference are we talking about between no back plate and a rigid backplate? Is it enough to spend some bucks and make one/buy an extra mounting plate, or are we talking 1-2c max?

Yep no doubt. Odd though I'm using the same model board as my board in the green rig. Rotating the block 90 degrees 'seems' to have fixed it, but havent had a chance to do a run yet.

I saw a G5 up for sale a little while ago here on XS, if I could I would pick it up.

Use it on my naked X6800 :D

Heads up to other owners............I ran into mounting issues on the EVGA 680i because of CAPs...........Cathar knows about that.:mad:

All it can take at times is for one of the caps to be sitting just 1/100" higher than another, and then it's a problem.

Also, depending on where the socket is in relation to the screws holding the board into the case, or even just due to the memory slots, boards will flex more in one direction than another under mounting pressures.

LOL, do you know how huge 1-2c would be? That'd be the difference between getting a G5 and getting a TDX. Well...probably close.

@Stew: I was on the waiting list for the G7's way back, I assume my block is in the mail also? :p:

EnJoY-the difference between an Apogee and an Apogee GTX is about 1.5-2c (according to Nikh's own testing), making the difference between a TDX and G5 waaaay more than 2c (that's assuming the G5 is towards the top of the pile).

Sorry been very busy and then got sidetracked with stepped bases LOL. Anyway, I spoke to Stew at length last night, I am going to have the G5 stepped... It is a marked improvement no doubt, I guess we shall see how it does against the rest.

I'm not great at reviews... but I would love to test the block... I have the revised enzotech block i need to test as well. Bruce said he has some 'revised' things for me too... gonna get busy again in my high paying WB testing job. ROFL.

Been having that problem with last gen and current gen Asus boards. Also the Intel Blackaxe. Caps are simply getting in the way, thats why my G5 is just sitting on the shelf right now. :(

Yes, but it won't include a NON stepped base... The G5 is still at the machinists shop, I need to pick it up but I have been very busy. I had it stepped because it won't compete otherwise.
