I'm a bit relieved seeing this thread. I got a crappy L636A 6300 for my 2nd rig and this thing tops @ 2.9ghz and this with 1.6v. :p:
FSB isn't an issue cause it can go up to 470mhz with 6X multi.

I'm too busy right now to change it, but its lifespan is till April's price drops... ;)

i dont agree with this either. my l631a run 3.15 ghz with only 1.28 volt and 3.6 with 1.4 volt also can reach 3.9 with 1.5 volt and i am just with stock cooler.

Im yet to test my L630F 6400. Lookin at this thread is a littlw worrying. Hope it can do at least 3.2.

EDIT: Did a few research and found out that these chips Oc pretty well and it's lapped :D

did this friend of yours get the CPU at frys? :D

I picked up the same stepping this weekend. L631B120, OEM from frys.

She's does 3.53 at 1.375V , if you want anything higher, you need to jump to 1.45V for 3.612 stable, and at 1.58V max was around 3.85. However i can pull off a superPI 1m and play with it for 30 more min b4 she hangs and freezes. I think if i dropped more voltage, she could probably hang at 3.85, but the idle temps at 1.58 was near 35C on H2O :X

Those of you wondering, they have about 8-9 more. The manager at frys was nice enough to pull his stock and allow me to flat test the CPU. A few of them are really bad on the IHS. This is why the manager pulled them for me. I showed him how to flat test with letters, and he was in disbelief, at how unflat the ihs was.

This frys is located in Burbank in CA. Incase your wondering which frys it is. Price was 309.00 :\

the 28A's and the 29F are the only ones i've had trouble with. i had a 26A that did 3.8ghz and a 28B that did close to 3.9ghz, and a 6300-27A that did 3.7ghz, all on air all stable. but those 28A's and 29F seem to be stuck around 3.4-3.5 at best. real disappointments. kind of like fhpchris's post :p:

you got a couple of decent clocking chips, don't delude yourself that you have special o/c talents.

clocking intels is a piece of cake, the chip can either do it or it can't.

btw my 27B E6600 does 3.75 orthos stable with 1.4v (droop to 1.34 on evga 680i)...better than the avg Xeon result i've seen posted here.

Sometimes, i feel its a bit of luck...
I tried a few 6600 L630F020 in my shop...
1pc can do orthos @ 3.8ghz, but fsb capped @ 505mhz
1Pc only do 3.5ghz stable but fsb up to 550mhz...
1pc, 3.3ghz also no go... :)

Thanks for that post. Iv just got myself a L630F 6400. 3.2Ghz would be fine for me. upgrading from opty 146 @2.8. 400Mhz over that should be a very nice increase in speed :D

My Xeon 3060 L630A986 (pack date: 11/15/06) does 3.6GHz, 1.375v Orthos stable, 3.73GHz at 1.4v, 3.8GHz at 1.425v, and 3.9GHz at 1.5v. I run it at 3.6GHz for 24/7. Still runs hot, but apparently not as hot at B chips.

I think Gautam confirmed this stepping was a good one, as well.

The worst one was the 24A, and it primed 3650 or so, followed by the 28A, and each xeon has done 3.9ghz prime and the X6800 only did 3.8 prime, but it ran 3d over 4100...

I guess all my chips are not half bad... for all Retail CPUS (E67 ES and X6800 were untested used.)

This just isnt true, once you have a board that can do good fsb(~450+ on 9x) and give stable voltages, you run into the problem of cooling (small temperature changes help alot..L629A Xeon got 80+ mhz prime from temps) along with a nice mount, and then finally you have to deal with your system memmory and dividers...

That isn't easy.

Some chips like my X6800 do hit that hard wall, they prime 3810 or so, but 3830 just is a clear NO GO even with more voltage and better cooling by a huge ammount, but others like my L629A Xeon will just keep going and going...

I hear ya. Unlike everyone else I actually prefer clocking with AMD. The HTT multi though scary for a noob takes only primary school mathematics to handle and everything else is even easier.
With this Intel rigg I have to think about alot of stuff concerning the NB that you don't have to with AMD like strap and stuff. But it's the best overclocker I've had both on low and high Volts. I love my 6600. :)

Take your pick, there's now heaps of boards that will do 4ghz on it's ear with a 6600/9x multi.

You're right in that you do have to tame the temps somewhat but clocking on the 680i board for instance is the easiest o/c ever, i was priming @ 3.6 stock volts on everything within the first 30mins of using Intel since northwood days.

it's the same as it's always been, the chip still has to be upto the task :) a pack date of a few weeks later and most likely i'd need .1v more for the same results.

have a drive on a 680/650 board, it's childs play to hit 430+FSB stock volts.

965/975 = more tweaking & possible cooling involved

You cannot say that here, it would be so easy for a good clocker to read that and go buy a Abit FP-IN9 and struggle for even 375 fsb.

There are good boards and bad ones, and the people who have less experience usually have the problem of having the bad ones...

Sounds similar to mine. Once you go past 1.4V it takes a crapload of volts to get any higher.

My friend recently got a E6600 L637A from the egg, that does 3.6ghz 1.48v(1.525v BIOS)..............so I guess not ALL of them are bad clockers, but it seems most of them are.
