It was always up to the mobo manufacturer to required Reg or non-Reg memory, so in the past every mobo manufacturer had followed AMD's HW guidelines. This new breed of motherboard is actually more like a throwback to the time of the inception of the FX cpu's. The original FX was a socket 940 Opteron with unlocked multipliers dubbed the FX51. This "monster" of a cpu ran default @ 2.2G and the few mobo's which accepted this chip required it to run Reg. memory. This memory requirement was one of the most limiting factors in almost ALL dual SOCKET AMD platforms. It generally was considered quite an achievement being able to push these setups ~15FSB over stock speeds. This caused OCer's to shy away from such cpu's but in reality, the SERVER variants of the Opterons (i.e. s940, sF) are built on AMD's absolute BEST silicon....
didnt OPP take 30k 3dmo1 with fx-51 and 9800XT? that was an achievement..
reg ddr dimms didnt suck that bad, there were some descent kingston and ocz kits, as fas as i can recall ^_^
EDIT
Andre, do u mean u can run 1 cpu in a dual socket mobo?
Yes that's what he means...;)Quote:

is this a bad system to build until k8l quads come out

That system won't be bad even by the time K13L comes out :p:Quote:

Shouldn't you guys wait for a confirmation that this will work with the Opties. The OP used a ES so maybe there is a change the retail opties won't work.

I would wait until you atleast could get other cheaper motherboards with Amd chipset:toast:
As it is now you pay a little to much for the Asus motherboard
But if you got the money to burn:D
Still if i got that much money to use right now i would wait to Q2 and then go
2xBarcelona 2xxx rig (8cores:slobber: ) or 2x Budapest 1xxx rigs:D or if Barcelona and Budapest was delayed i go 2xkentsfield rigs .
And ofcourse Run Wcg on it:D
