Using DVDShrink, I did a deep analysis of Matrix Reloaded, and I was getting about 1700fps during that. Size of the movie was identical to yours at 4,463MB.
Backup (encoding) occurred in 2:42.

How did you manage to run two instances of DVD Shrink? I could open two of them, but when I tried to backup on both, one crapped out saying the VOB file was being used by another process...something I'm missing?
As for controller, I'm using the onboard SAS RAID controller with two 36GB Fujitsu MAX3036RC 15k drives...nothing special. I use that array for the source files and use the RAID 10 array (4x Maxtor 10K IV 146GB) on my server as a destination.

I did the encoding with two source folders and two destination folders, but one encoded significantly faster.
The first went in 3 minutes 48 seconds, with the second going in 4 minutes 20 seconds...
Also found my page file was insufficient...had to go to 8 GB to make it work;)

well, soon ill be getting the areca1231, have the 2GB cache for a month, its been in my sig for some time.. see if i can keep up with u.. but if u upgrade to the 8-core forget about it.. ud probably do 3 / 4 movies at the same time.. lol

Arrays share the controller, so, IIRC 1231 has 450 MB/s max bandwidth, two arrays would scratch for it plus the IOps.

Consider waiting for the next-generation of Arecas with IOP341. Currently, only the 24-port version (ARC1280) is available, but smaller ones should be around the corner - definitely worth the wait (unless you intend to use 2 drives ;-)
@Sam, Dell uses 5000X but places a Riser card in order to support SLI. IIRC, officially Dell will only put Quadro FX's for SLI, but 7900GTX's work on Precision 690 (from 2cpu.com)

I wish Areca would make an entry level controller with the IOP341 around 6 or even 4 ports. The 1231ML is their lowest model and not exactly entry level pricing. However, that is one sweet card tho, I love to have a setup like that someday. :toast:
There is no need for IOP341 for 4 drives. Check Napalm's other posts, you'll find one with Arc1230 (not 1231ML) with 6 Raptors giving 450 MB/s - so the old Arecas are good for 6 drives.
For 8 there's already the need for 341. However, at those prices, one should consider a SCSI setup LOL.
Do you actually think they will make an entry-level 4-port card with the IOP341 any time soon? If not, I'll just go with the 1210 (IOP332).Quote:

So you're saying with less than 6 drives the IOP333 will be equal in performance as the IOP341 with same number of drives? I was under the impression that the IOP341 is still better with the same number of drives as the IOP333 and older. If that's not true and it's just a bandwidth limit, then that changes everything. I wont be using more than 4 drives so I might considered the 1220 or 1210 instead. Also how is the 3ware 9650SE-8LPML compared with the Areca 1220? Since they are both within the same price range.Quote:
