If I were Intel I would have done things differantly. I would have left the L2cache at 4mbs. Used the saved transitors to double the L1 cache size. maybe that would have lowered the clock speeds I don't know. But increaseing L1 it seems to me would be a greater performance leap.
Turtle 1,you are talking about OCing the server CPUs man...Tell me what company in the likes of Sun will buy Yorkfields at slower speed bin and OC them?
Quadcore chips will work at their specd speeds,not the way you dream they will.
There will be some small number of enthusiast who will buy them to insert them in in appropriate mobos that allow OCing,but the server market doesn't work that way...
You need to exit that small world of yours where Yorkfield on air will clock to 5GHz.We don't know that.And if they will,power consumption will skyrocket due to higher voltage input and frequency...
And as for which will be faster,Barcelona or Penryn,let's wait for the benchmarks,shall we?Instead of talking bs about 4Ghz+ Penryns and HT that doesn't exist and vector units on Nehalem(which is a late 2008 product).
Yorkfields sound nice. Be cool to have. BUT a wolf running stock at between 3.6 -4.ghz. Running stable at 4.75 sable using water only because its better. Air should run here on these new chips. I DID SAY if penryn = Conroe in over clockability. NOW I KNOW thats a big if.But I must say my conclusions on this is based off of whats actually known.
Penryn AO chips run really well. Very GOOD sign . When you consider both the shrink and the new transitor .
What intel has said 20% higher clocks. At same power draw as Conroe-Maybe Thats a good sign this may indicate that if you use your present conroe M/B with same power envelope you would be running in the present Conroe power envelop A 3.6 penryn should slip right in to the socket and go.
So based off of what we do know and what we have seen. I exspect Penryn will be every bit as good as Intels says it is. The only thing not known is will this BABY spin the tires or will it actually get some bite and get up and go. If this thing is as GOOD at O/C as Conroe. You can forget about K8L. It really isn't known if K8L well O/C well we don't know. AMD mat figure we only need 2.4 ghz to handle conroe. Thats not known. So it is possiable.
But do i believe it NO way. I believe Intel but Not AMD. Look at what both companies have reported to the public in the last year.
Right now I believe Intel penryn will be better than they are reporting.
SO basicly I don't think K8L will be an O/C monster. I do believe Penryn will be an O/C monster.
Most honest people here would agree THAT based off of what we know.
What I believe is more crediabile based off of everthing we know right now.
Based Off the fact INTEL is Delivering.
AMD has nothing but talk trash for the lst 2 years. SHOWING nice pics of there K8L processsors. As if to be saying look here I got one right here in my hand . DO YOU SEE IT . ITS right in front of you.. We don't want to put it on a M/B tho and show benchmarks because we DON'T want to Put Intel to Shame.

I mean the things he sais do sound VERY plausable and ar based on many truths as well as in line with "Intels new behaviour"
I my self am no experct at CPU design/talk but expect intel to folow through on this one as promissed, and judging by their confidence I guess they are not scared of showing of their sample right now.
The fact that Intels CPU might overclock way better than AMDs baby makes it THE choice for most of the members of XS.
As for the general public, if they perform within 10% percent of each other the will sell the same, just driven by fanboism of regular buyers
I do expect AMD to face up and show how it works in the real cause this up until now means very little and is pretty lame of them. More public friendly is allways nice - Intel realised that almost to late.
