When test SPI,I965 VS N680i @ASUS platform,who is winner?

I really appreciate your tests Coolaler but is it not a drastic conclution to say that Intels 965 chipset is better than NVIDIAs 680i based on some SPi tests (even if you only consider single graphics). I am not "playing" SPi when gaming so is that relly your bottom line impression from an overall point of view when judging the 680i vs 965/975 chipsets. You mention the 680i is immature with respect to unlinked fsb and mem (which might be expected), is it otherwise a solid chipset or is it your general impression that the 680i is flacky when overclocking?

I'm sure this is due to the fact that the P5B has got a several BIOS-revisions, that have removed virtually all the bugs, and makes it perform on it's max. The 680 will prolly catch up to it shortly.

What's a max fsb, that you can set, and the winxp is bootable?

What i wanted to see sometime ago. I wont change my 975x board then. I guess we'll have to wait for 985x ( or whatever they call it, bearlake i mean ) for better chipsets ( i have no faith on RD600 seeing this 680i :( )

you are trying to read waaaaay too much into the results and putting words in his mouth.

Coolaler simply showed that with these preliminary tests, 965 is faster than 680i in SPi 1M and 32M on 2k3 at the frequencies and timings he showed...thats it thats all. nothing more nothing less.

the fact that you think he said "that Intels 965 chipset is better than NVIDIAs 680i based on some SPi tests..." is you taking his words out of context.

he posted SPi results and said 965 is better than 680i...put it into context and don't let your self think its more than its not...end of story.

An asynchronous fsb is favorable for overclocking though isnt it??

Not really, you want 1:1, but with intel you always have a CPU (ok most of the time) that goes faster than the RAM.

Asynchronous is more a necessary evil I guess.

I see your point (at least from the way you understand it :) My point was actually that we should not put too much emphasis on these results and not just judge the 680i chipset based on this. That was what I was trying to ask him to clarify. However, It is a very interesting comparison. So bottom line we agree.

no one is making an overall judgement on the chipset based on SPi results, we are making a SPi performance judgement based on SPi results. wrap your head aorund it. for some of us that bench SPi, this IS all that matters.

I wish I was coolaler...does he get all these sent for free? Or just really cheap?

975 for AIR/maybe water SuperPI (490FSB), 965 for water/DI/LN2 SuperPI (+500FSB) and 680i for SLI 3D :)

yes,Dani's right.Let's say one has a x6800 and a SS cooling and RAM overclocked to 550mhz.Of course,the 975 chipset
won't allow that high fsb and it also has problems with ram dividers.Although 975 chipset appears to be 0.23% faster in coolaler's test,the 965 would make the whole system quite alot faster because of the higher overclockability.(if you have an expensive ram you may want stretch it to the max.).That is if you aircool the NB,otherwise the 975 is still the king (ie on a DICE -cooled NB,hehe)

965 @ 1066 strap +500FSB 1:1 is fast as heck ;)

Have you plan to do some tests at higher fsb? (over 400 MHz)

With the same settings, the results are fairly close.

I would be interested to see how they differ in terms of: overclockability, stability, memory support(with all four filled), and component temps(nbridge, voltage regs etc.) while OC'd.

Hey coolaler, once again thanks for your testing. I know it's alot of work but if you have time you should check some different fsb's and play with timings a bit. unless you already have of course. ;)

Also, i would love to see a 3d comparison if you get the chance.
