Nocona hasn't heatpipes, but should be easyer to mount.

Anyways, first one would be hard work because the compnents on the pcb are higher then the core. So you would have it resting on them most likely, plus you need airflow to the ram. The second one looks like it would be very nice.

So 'heat' is the trick for separating the heatpipes from the base and retaining plate, etc.... How long and what kind of intensity required firing those pipes before they separate? And how much, if any, force required to help them along?

On a NB, you could get the same temps with a heatsink 1/4 the size of a BT. Not enough heat to utilize its capacity.

thinking about using a un-used bigtpyhoon here on my 8800GT, specially that i don't have a case and using a bench table
anyway, can you please tell me the best way to attach the pipes back to the base after inversing their direction ? does it work with normal soldering or something special ?
just heat the crap out of the base after replacing heatpipes where you want them and putting the heatpipe holder/backet holder back on.
When you hit the right temperature you will also be able "wick" more solder into the joint that has been created for a better joint.. more solder the better.
