That was just the dimm that Micron will make and yes you can use DDR2 ECC on your intel and AMD systems. If your motherboard dosen't support ECC, then the ECC part of the dimm will not be used but the dimm will work. ECC dimms have a extra mem IC on both sides that makes it ECC so you can make a dimm using the same memory ICs for a DDR2 2 gig dimm with out ECC.

Yes, but ECC is expensive... so you'd really be paying a premium for 8GB if you needed it.

no they can scale just as far, however they are statistically more likely to have a lower overclock. Because the speed of your ram is limited by the max speed of your slowest memory chip. Thus the more chips you have, the more likely you are to be held back by a chip. Ideally all you want is ONE IC on the stick for Overclocking but that isn't too practical this day and age.

You mix up ECC and registered. Different concepts, you can have one without the other, although buffered non-ECC is rare.

Scaling can be difficult with registered modules as the register chip is in danger of being overdriven. However, the socket 940 crowd does it reasonably well.

ECC modules have 9 chips and since the weakest chip hold the module back there's much chance of a limit. Also, when ECC is turned on it will halt your computer at double-bit errors, whereas the benchmarking kind of overclocker might actually want to continue.

The actual memory chips on all the modules are the same. Registered and/or ECC uses the same chips, just in a different configuration. So nonregistered versions of this scan't be far behind.

6 months till 4gb standard?? Don't think so.. I've been running 2x512MB RAM for the last 24! months, and only now switching to 2x1GB.. And I like to consider myself somewhat an enthusiast... RAM is pretty much like CPUs: In gaming they take secondplace, behind a good GFX (to a certain point of course) :)

well as you know there are memory intensive applications. such as Fear, BF2 and the like, but what modern gamers sometimes forget is that MOST games DON"T have Memory cleaning portions in their code and just like Firefox 1.5
Their ram use will explode and get bigger till the application crashes.
And the 4GB limit (actually 3.2GB) is the only thing these days from us seeing insanely high memory usage.

A crappy game like BF2 today requiers 2GB of RAM so that it can run smoothly. With Vista needing a 1 GB to it self and games needing 2GB, 4GB seems perfect, unless offcourse you dont mind cheap system of caching on HD.

First of all Windows XP Home/Pro with SP2 can't see more than 3.2GB.
Also there is always a possibility of problems during o/c cause many memory controllers can't handle overclocking four modules at once.

There is not even one mainstream application or game which can utilize 4gigs NOT EVEN ONE.
Only some 3D renderings or heavy some Photoshop tasks can use so much memory.

4gigs won't ever became necessary in the near future,companies create them for ignorant gamers who think that 4gigs will give them a hole new experience in gaming (many of you belong to this group).

If you upgrade your system from 2 to 4 gigs you will not understand even a tiny difference at 90% of the applications you're running.

So until Vista/dx10 and next generation games release,4gigs is tottally uselless.

Prove me that i'm wrong.
