Its all about choice you can buy a slower AMD cpu and save a few bucks . Or you can buy an Intel cpu for best performance . Bottom line its your choice . the reason why amd took so long to go to 300mm wafers was mostly due to the cost , amd lets intel go spin it's wheels , and then goes in for the stuff when it is proven , and getting cheaper , just like DDR2

Now that 300mm technology is becoming mainstream, analysts and chipmakers are beginning to talk about 450mm wafers. But this time, it appears to be just talk.
Both Applied Materials and Novellus, two of the biggest makers of capital equipment for building wafers, say the option is not even on the foreseeable horizon. And while executives at both companies do not discount it could happen someday, that day is a long way off.
“Eventually, at the right time, there will be enough impetus for 450mm,” said Mike Splinter, president and CEO of Applied Materials. “But volumes have to grow significantly for there to be enough motivation. We’re nowhere near reaching the potential of 300mm.”
He noted that 300mm has anywhere between six and eight more generations of process nodes before it will be necessary to consider 450mm. “I don’t think in the next 10 years it’s viable.”

SEMATECH maybe the industry consortia trusted with the task of producing the cost/business models for the possible wafer size migration after 300mm but it's plain to see that Intel Corp is the company most heavily behind the modelling work.
Though Intel may want to move to the 450mm wafer size ten years after the adoption of 300mm wafers, it's impossible to find any equipment company executive prepared to put any toes in the water and commit to the large scale expenditure to develop the processing tools to handle the larger wafers.

Since this is all subjective anyway I used XDR only as an example. Since the Inquirer articles points to Rdimms and micro buffers. If this story has any merit to it . I am reasonabably sure it would be XDR2 were talking about.
Now my wife's brother inlaw told me that Intel may be looking to buy rambus befor the inquirer article came out. That got me excited. When we were discussing this issue on the phone I reminded him that it was he that told me that AMD was't buying ATI. Since he was the engineer on the R500's memory controller and had told the ATI he was leaving them to work for Intel . He said he was left out of the loop on that one. I can except that.
He also reminded me that Intel shopping for rambus was just skuttlebutt at the present time.
But it would be a huge slapp in the face to both AMD and ATI . Since the ATI memory controller uses some rambus tech . That does have a lincense agreement in place.

Yep intel did fail at their first stab at a Video card. But they own the rights to some interesting video tech now I believe Its called VR I should look but I believe thats correct.. They have also went out a gotten some pretty good engineers. Very good ones. Guys from NV and ATI and more are leaving the AMD/ATI ship for Intel . MEN are all about $$$$$$. They got almost all the engineers from that GPU maker that recently gave up the ship. Its name slips away from me at present.

Beyond the land of the rising sun is the rising Godson, a growing family of microprocessors designed and manufactured in China by Chinese engineers for the Chinese domestic market. Intended for low-cost desktop computers, servers, and embedded systems, these 32- and 64-bit chips are rapidly becoming as sophisticated as any designs in the world, falling short in performance only because Chinese fabrication technology lags behind the rest of the industry by two process generations.
Microprocessor Report briefly described the 32-bit Godson-1 in 2002, but few technical details have trickled out of China until now. (See MPR 12/2/02, “China Unveils MIPS-Like CPU.”) All Godson processors are designed by engineers at the Institute of Computing Technology (ICT), part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. In 2002, ICT and Chinese entrepreneurs founded a Beijing-based fabless semiconductor company, BLX IC Design Corporation Ltd., to bring Godson processors to market and support them with software-development tools and product-reference designs.
In December 2003, Advanced Micro Devices and BLX IC Design announced a relationship and opened the AMD/BLX Computing Client Development Center in Beijing. BLX IC Design is creating reference designs for thin clients and other computing products using AMD and BLX IC Design processors. The first two products are thin clients powered by AMD’s MIPS32-compatible Alchemy Au1500 processor and BLX IC Design’s Godson-1. The creators of the Godson-1 say its architecture is “MIPS-like”—a description that annoys MIPS Technologies, which doesn’t authorize the Godson architecture or license any intellectual property to ICT or BLX IC Design. AMD, which is a MIPS licensee, says it encourages BLX IC Design and MIPS to resolve their licensing issues.
This spring, ICT introduced the Godson-2, another “MIPS-like” processor. Considerably more advanced than the Godson-1, it has a 64-bit architecture, four-way superscalar pipelines, dynamic branch prediction, out-of-order execution, and other powerful features. China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) fabricates Godson-2 chips in a 0.18-micron CMOS process, and ICT is porting the design to a 0.13-micron process. ICT is also beginning work on the next-generation Godson-3, which may sprout multiple processor cores and hardware-assisted simultaneous multithreading.
It’s clear that China wants to produce general-purpose microprocessors as advanced as any in the world. The Godson family (also known as Dragon) is only one fruit of China’s National 863 Program, a government-funded research and development project to create homegrown technology for Chinese high-tech industries. For now, Godson processors are solely for China’s domestic market, but exports to world markets are possible in the future.
In June, MPR interviewed Godson’s chief architect, Weiwu Hu, a professor at ICT in Beijing. Weiwu described the Godson-1 and Godson-2 in unprecedented detail and revealed some of his ambitions for the Godson-3. In addition, Weiwu provided an English-language white paper on the Godson-2 microarchitecture.
After analyzing this information, MPR believes the Chinese already are capable of designing world-class microprocessors, assuming they have access to world-class fabrication technology. Although Chinese fabs are about two process generations behind the curve, China’s technology is rapidly accelerating. China could also outsource some chip manufacturing to foreign foundries—perhaps even to crosstown rivals on the opposite side of the Taiwan Strait. (Irony knows no borders.)
