nForce Idle temps

I wanted to share what I just discovered.
I have an EPOX 8RDA, water cooled .
I generally see 28 degrees at idle, because of the idle circuit being enabled. Well, I just added an internal USB 2.0 card reader (Apacer-6 way). My idle temps no longer are cool. If I unplug the reader from the mobo USB header my temps drop but if it is plugged in the temps rise. I have tried disabling in device manager and the temps remain high. So....does anyone have any ideas on how I can keep the internal thingy hooked up and 'KEEP' my lower idle temps?
BTW this usb thing might be the reason a lot of folks say they chage the reg setting and 'nothing' happens.

Well, I hadn't bothered trying this before as I was told that CPU Disconnect did the same thing, but the terrible heatwave over here made me change my mind, and I'm glad I did.:D

My CPU temp has dropped from 45c idle to 39c idle, and that was over the space of about a minute, so I know all other temp condiditions were the same, cheers guys!

@ st0nedpenguin how did you do that? I also have Abit NF7-S Revision 2.0 board and 1.6 bios and my default setting was 9F. To what F did you set it. And do you have CPU Discconect disabled or enabled in bios?

Of course, if you run a distributed computing program this doesn't help much :D

I'm running a MSI-K7N2G-L nforce chip set...do you think this trick would work w/ my mobo???

Does this actually lower the temps? or is it some sort of software trick to make you think its lower?

it lowers it, since it is not 'working' all of the time the temp drops when processing is not needed.
this is great with my water chiller as I have a reservoir, when the idle loop is enabled and I am not crunching number the water cools down quickly then for my spurt of work the temp rise a bit but the 'average' temperature is quite a bit cooler.

Oh sweet, I'll have to try that on my 8RDA+. I'm already getting a 34-35C idle temp when the ambient is 20C (28C when it's 15C :p )

OMG! This rocks! I just changed it from 8F which is how I found it, to 1F. I looked over at my LCD and it was already at 30C! This is with a 22.5C case temp!

It's at 28C now. :D

WOOT! Awesome!


Now for a stability test just in case.

Edit: 27C semi-idle now. That's a 10C drop!

Umm, now it doesn't work as well.....

I hadn't installed USDM in this OS yet, so I did and then restarted. The register was back to 8F, so I set it to 1F and the temp started dropping, but only to 35C!


It was up to 40C before I set that! What's going on?

At first it drops from 22.5C case/37C CPU to 22.5C case/27C CPU and now it 's 40C and will only go down to 35C when I set the thing to 1F.

??????????

Ok, uninstalling USDM brought the normal temp back. It was 37C again idle.

I set the register to 1F and it slowy creeped to 33C but won't go any lower.

The first time I did this it almost instantly dropped to 30C, then proceeded to go to 27C.

What gives?!?

Yet another edit: I went off to do some dog maintenance :p and came back to 27C so I guess it's fine. Windows must have been doing something before...

Now how do I keep this setting? Or at least apply it on startup.

I tried WPCRSET and it worked. :)


Here's a step-by-step:

1. Get WPCREDIT and WPCRSET here:

2. Extract to a directory and click "INSTDD.EXE".

3. Open WPCREDIT and click on 6F which will be set to 9F, 8F, or something else. Change it to 1F.

4. Note the PCI Bus, Device, and Function at the top of WPCREDIT, they will probably be 0.

5. Open WPCRSET and click add. Enter 6F for the register and 1F for the data.

6. Make sure WPCRSET is set to "Start" and Device is set to "Enable" at the top of the window.

7. Restart. Open WCREDIT and see if the 6F register is still on 1F. If it is, you're all (WPCR) set. :D

yup it works, i changed it this morning. now my idle temps at 1.7v are at 28-31 °, before they would be high 30's

just tried it, not sure on results yet but i will reply when i have some

Sorry if this is old news, but if you haven't heard of this, give it a try and post your results

Go to device manager, click on "Sound, video and game controllers", right click on NVIDIA (TM) nForce (TM) MCP Audio Processing Unit (Dolby R Digital) and go to properties. There you will be able to see an option to disable it.

After you disable it, your temps should be about 5 degrees lower.

Try it an post your results!

to me it wasn't old news...
anyway.. tried it. used to be 36°C now down to 32°C. now this is some improvement!
i have tried cpu-idle and stuff and those gave me max 2°C less than before - changing the value of 6F to 1F was about the same drop. so this really is an improvement. down to 30°C while typing this :D SWEET!
next i'll try that usb schtuff.. see if i get even less....

can someone explain to me the USB stuff?

BTW, after modding the registry entry that is suggested by OPPAINTER, is there any ill effect on USB devices that I've linked my PC to?

i haven't set mine, and my idle temps = system temp, so normally 28-31C, depending on my system temp
