I wont buy ATI unless they change thier ways.. Thier Drivers suck, and to be quiet frank, I think the graphics = :banana::banana::banana::banana: too. Atlease the graphics on my X1900XTX sucked. The graphics on my 9500NP were good.. well for the time.Quote:

Yes AMD bought ATi but ATI is working in alot of difrent markets and its hard to believe that AMD will keep all of them alive if all they want are some parts.

Yes according to Nvidia their atm nr1 in each of those mentioned markets.
But if AMD starts puttign their own people and money etc in the equivalent parts of ATI Nvidia might be in trouble.
thats why i think such a statement from Nvidia could be reason to think.

initial thought: from where i stand this is nice. i mean both are smaller companies in comparison to their competitors so its nice to see the make a strong play to remove some of their critical weaknesses that come with being the smaller firms. spend money to make money i guess. anyhoo still loving amd and still keepin nv gfx cards and more than likely nf5 mobos. but it will be nice to see more than just awesome ati chipsets in the future but some real innovation. now time to read this thread. /subbed

They said earlier in this thread that ATI RD600 boards are on track for release, the license doesn't run out for 6 months.
This makes me ponder what features K8L and the new ATi DX10 cards will have vs. Intel and the ATi cards.
Only logical that AMD incorporates some chipset feature to give a little 1up right?
I know everyone hates the Inq...but...I guess they sometimes are right.

I am still wondering if this is good for consumers.
Pros
1. Integrated graphics for entry level machines
2. Closer relations and tweaks for chipsets
3. Good support in servers
4. Better advantage for gamers since the Chipset, Processor, and GFX card are all being developed by the same company and probably can communicate faster and better.
Cons
1. Intel has said that they will not renew ATI's chipset license which it seems R600? is going to be the best overclocking boards for C2D.
2. AMD has to be in a big pot of debt
3. Nvidia chipsets have been the forerunner of all AMD machines

My thoughts exactly. nVidia chipsets HAD been the forerunner for AMD, but with ATI's XPRESS chipsets and now the merger I can see that changing. The only reason why I ever had an nvidia chipset was it was faster and better than VIA which I used to use before (SiS chipsets are a joke, I wouldn't touch them). Well the ATI chipset came out and now I have that. nVidia is no longer the only real good chipset maker anymore. Good for consumers IMO.Quote:

I wonder how Intel will solve the usual low chipset supply supply to motherboards now when ATI's contract will expire Q4, that's what has been a real prob for Intel for a while now, low motherboard supply.
Because they would be cutting out a major part of their aquisition. These companies rely a lot on pride. If they withdrew from the high end then sales in other areas also go down. System intergrators rarely want the high end but it does affect their buying decisions. If its is profitable and costs more to shutdown than to keep running then what would be the point?Quote:

Short term nothing at all will change.
Long term, could be a good thing, it just depends on how they handle everything.
They now have a inhouse chipset design team. They don't have to rely on others (Via/ Nvidia/ Sis and whoever else)
They will still have Nvidia making stuff, since as far as Nvidia is concerned nothing really changed. They will still make chipsets & gfx boards.
Nvidia wants to make chipsets & gfx cards. I doubt AMD will pull a intel, and yank the license.
VIA/SIS/others all want to sell chipsets also. They only got 2 (well 3, if you count VIA as a CPU maker) so it is still AMD or Intel. They got no other real options.
Maybe, just maybe, ATI will finally focus on linux drivers for a change. AMD is pretty good about porting their stuff to linux, and giving all the required info.
I can see they will now have multiple sockets on the mainboard, each with a direct channel to the CPU. This could be some VERY fast improvements.

I dont see AMD chipsets getting better with ATI inhouse. AMD will ensure that ATI's cards work and perform better with an AMD cpu though. I also think that the cost of the ATI chipsets will increase to mb manf.
RD600 is scheduled for Intel soon, its just to bad that will be the best chipset we get for the CD2 platform.
will ati just send rd600 out and not worry about revising its problems after their chipset contract expires?
what will this mean for rd600?
