yeah got my card too. Attached the silencer, modded the power, and ready to roll.
Cheers for the prompt delivery Persivore.

Good stuff :) You can start submitted stock benchies from today.
ORB compares and screenshots (with CPU-z and Pi for the 3dmarks please, it won't be possible with AM3 however but the CPU score will be sufficient validation there)
Remember, stock GFX (use driver default settings) and overclocked system. We're looking for CPU-z and Pi shots which show the same (or very similar) times between the "stock gfx" and "overclocked" GFX submissions.
Either post the links/screenies in this thread, or drop me a PM with links. All the screenshots will be uploaded to a single point, so anyone is free to scan through them.
If anyone needs hosting for images, drop me a PM will setup an FTP account for you. Likewise if theres any issues with ORB compares just shout.
I'd ask people to add a link to a sponsor in their ORB compares too, if you link the sponsor of the category you're in that'd be great. Just as a thankyou to them for putting up some awsome prizes.
If anyone cant make the 7 day window, please let me know ASAP.
Stock benchmarks with links. I couldnt submit the AM3 files for some reason, so i'll zip and email them to you Highland3r :)

Cheers mate. Can you confirm those are driver default settings?
Yes no problem :) - How would you like confirmation?
It was a fresh install of Catalyst Omega 5.10a, no OS tweaks, no driver settings altered.
I ran 2001, then 2003, then Aquamark 3. Probably all within 30 mins...
Tom
No worries, just wanted to make sure :)Quote:

Just to confirm mate, these benchies should be run with GFX @ stock and CPU/system speed overclocked (if applicable)
Are you going to be running CPU etc at the same frequencies in the "overclocked" section too?
If you're having issues with the 03 compare, I can upload it for you if you want? Just let me know what info you want adding in the comments section...
Cheers
Yep I'm just gonna leave the system @ stock here, and in the "overclock" stage too, seems like it provides enough bandwidth for the 9600 to do its thing - rules out system instability too hopefully. I'll try again to do the '03 upload tonight, my connections fine, it just complains that "Submission Failed" and points me to the support section (had a look, nothing relevant in there). I'll pm you in the morning if I've had no joy, not too early mind, its a bank holiday
Ok mate no worries, will get your scores added to the spreaddy :DQuote:

Cheers guys, can everyone who hasn't submitted stock scores get them done ASAP please?
Overclocked results can be posted from today, so lets see what you can do! Will update the first post with stock scores later today :)
Amen to that, considering us two is running the worse rigs :(, I am glad my cpu was not the lowest superpi time lol.Quote:

As for 01, sorry, i'll redo that.
And would i be right in saying that these things need a VDDQ mod like i need water? Cos the mem starts coughing up at 260mhz or so, and increasing the voltage does bog all. The mem is cold as a cucumber, with some hihg CFM fans over it, so i guess the only other thing is the vddq mod, right?
Cheers guys.
Don, can you update the 03 compare url please, both are for 01 atm

Got my ATi silencer thru the post today, hopefully it will boost my core clock a bit further. My ramsinks are woefully inadequate, and are getting pretty damn hot, might have to replace them if I can fit anything better under the silencer. Its all good fun :D
The cooling on the cards doesn't have to be a lot they don't get that hot; I certainly wouldn't spend like £20 for a cooler.
It was a cheapy off ebay - plus I got a slightly better 9600np to put it on afterwards :D

Noticed my pi times are about 0.1 sec faster than before, I think this is because my earlier ones were made with cpu-z started first, which ate a little CPU.
The free ORB only allows one published link for '03, so my stock link doesn't work any more. I can switch it back if needed.
Had trouble running ATT and AM3 at same time when heavily overclocked. Didn't have time to find the reason so the AM3 scores I have were done at lower mem overclock than the 3DMarks.
I have been asked to go into work 2hours earlier than I was supposed to tonight so Im not gonna get chance to finish all my benching :( I have managed to get my 01 score but havnt had chance to tweak 03 to perfection yet and havnt had chance to attempt overclocked run on aquamark.

I hate to ask, but would it be possible to extend the deadline to midnight tonight? I'm a night owl, and i've only just gotten home, i need to have dinner, and then i would be able to do better with a few hours to bench.
I know it's asking a lot, and i feel a bit rude doing it, but i suspect i'm not the only one who would appreciate it.
Feel free to turn me down, and i'll do the best i can with the time allowed.
Entries for myself, REALLY dissapointed with the results, not had enough time to play this week tho as works been hell.

I've got results from Persivore sat on my PC at the moment too, and confirmation of more on the way from Johnny Bravo.
Please note, the phase group has been extended until 10pm on Monday. I was informed during the first week of benchies that Boardy and Thickbrit would be unable to get results due to a leak in one of their units (I have PM's to back this up if anyone wants to see). Since there are no other results (bar my own) submitted in the category I don't believe they have an unfair advantage.
Also note Other categories (air and water) now close at MIDNIGHT any results posted or emailed to me after then will not be included in the final results.
Gar! 10pm Monday! :D
My results, ive had a realy realy bad time with this, several hardware failures and sod all time. Before my DFI blew (boom smoke) i was running 355MHz on the memory, but ive had to come back with a lowly PIII-800MHz and a board and card which wants to do funk all anymore :(

I'm not competing anymore, but ive completed new reference (stock) benchmarks with the P-III none the less.
At stock my card ran with minor artifacts at 480MHz core, 260MHz memory.
Aquamark was completed at 480/295MHz, i found it the toughest benchmark.

Although there is a few days left in the competition, i wont be using this card again as firstly im not competing and secondy im absoloutely sick of this card. It is the most worthless POS and the most difficult to overclock card i have ever used.
Big ups to the entrants, best of luck in the few days left :)

Unlucky mate :( nice little setup, and I second that I hate it so badly and are sick of them, the mem on my card would not just go up I am surprised yours rain at 3.1 mine would artifact like crazy at 2.9-3.0
Damn, thats an awsome setup there Soddem! Such a shame your DFI took a dive :( Would have LOVED to have seen some scores with the A64. If you get a mobo sorted, perhaps you could re-run for us?
I've got Jimwah's overclocked results sat in PM box atm too, just to confirm he's submitted overclocked results.
Gonna hit the sack now, will get the final scores (pending Phase) up tomorrow morning.
Would like to thank everyone for competing, hopefully you've all enjoyed it, and not lost too much sleep over these cards!
Hoping to organise another comp later this year, should build on this one (and be a little better organised!!)
Cheers again guys, good to see so many UK overclockers about. We NEED to organise a meet up sometime, judging by the results of this comp, theres some serious skill around :D
An 800MHz PIII isn't awesome! :D
Yes, id love too, although i wont be buying any board made by DFI in the near future. The way that the board failed was unacceptable. I'll look for a NF7-S when i get some more time off.
Tom
Was going to mention something about running pi 1m only, then noticed the clockspeed ;) Must have been painful "benching" on that machine! Pretty awsome Nature in the end too, considering your CPU speed... Maybe this is the only system where the CPU bottlenecked the graphics card :toast: :toast: :PQuote:

This comp has reminded me why I don't overclock any more :D Lots of pain for the benefit. My card really didn't like memory overclocking. Once past 240 it would artifact. Tweeking settings could get it runable stable up to 275 but artifacts everwhere hence my balance of running at 250 for the benches. If I had more time, maybe I would have done the Vddq seperation mod.
3Dmark03 would like to crash with file errors on me for no reason, where 01 and AM3 would run as long as you like. Reinstalls didn't help, only reboots. When I settled on the best settings in the time, AM3 decided it wouldn't run at the same time as ATT. Argh!
Still, it was fun in a masochistic kinda way...
funny, for me aquamark was a complete biatch. I could happily run 3dmark01 at xxx/255, 3dmark03 would only run at xxx/250 and Aquamark would only 240mhz!
Mackerel, how did you get such good scores? Would i be right in guessing you used either Omega drivers, or LOD tweaks?
Oh, and next time, i reckon we should use PCI-E cards. Most everyone has a PCI-E capable system nowadays, and the first generation of native PCI-E cards are approaching fairly reasonably prices now.
i.e, one can get an x700 pro for £47 from retekdirect now, that would be cool. Of course, we'll just have to wait and see.
http://www.drunken-student.co.uk/bit...mp/results.PNG
No more official results from now. Any results recieved will be added to the spreadsheet but WON'T count in the official rankings. You're benching for fun now!
The total score in the far right is used for ranking. Those entrants marked in Blue are not officialy "counted" in overall ranks.
Due to no entrants being present in the "other" category the 1st and 2nd place prizes will goto the Air category where there are a sufficent number of entrants.
Same goes for water, only 1 entrant so 2nd place prizes goto air.
So, results as follows:
Air
1st - Johnny Bravo -- 19.0. 7800GS from bit-tech
2nd - Sam666 -- 18.4. Watercooling gear from coolercases and EPUK
3rd - Goreblast -- 15.33 -- 1 year hosting package
4th - Tank_Rider - 14.6 -- 1 year hosting package
5th - Mackerel -- 11.7 -- 1 year hosting pacakge
6th - Jimwah - 11.0
7th - Don_vercetti - 10.9
Water
1st - Persivore -- 16.0 - X1800XL AIW from ATI
Can the prize winners drop me a PM with their details please.
For those interested, the forumla used for scoring was as follows:
((2*(Core_increase)+ mem_increase)*10)+(% increase in score)/1000
The complete spreadsheet with all results/clocks is available on request.
Would like to thank everyone for competing in the comp, hope everyones enjoyed the benching and had a laugh along the way. Also want to give a big thanks to those who have sponsored us cheers guys, much appreciated.

Will post my full setup and guide to how I got those scores tonite once I've got the photos and all the settings noted down
How embarressing. I didn't realise you were taking our core clocks into account for the overall score.
Ah well, nice to play with a new toy, looking forwards to the next compo.
How does the formula work? Does it give twice the importance to core clock as opposed to memory?
Tom
Congrats to the winners, great competition :D I'd be up for a rerun on a cheap PCI-e card sometime soon too, maybe nvidia next time?
I used a fan wedged into an open window & put the machine, open-cased nearby. I also put some alu ramsinks on too, but I'm wondering if they did more harm than good; since anything above 240 on my mem artifacted badly.
jimwah
Hey guys (and girls?), just thought I’d post up my setup with a little guide of what I found worked for me in this competition :toast: .
Just a quick overview of the system I was running for the competition
• Intel Pentium M 780ES running at 3GHz on 1.55volts
• Asus P4C800-E DLX, Vcore, Vdroop and Vagp (1.9volts)
• 1 GB of BH-5 at 250MHz 2-2-5-2
• Raptor for XP install (3DMark03 and Aquamark) and Quantum fireball for windows 2000 install (3DMark01)
http://img280.imageshack.us/img280/3...3medium4eu.jpg
OK a quick overview of the card, which I’m sure if your like me you’ve grown tired of looking, I’m pretty sure I’ve memorised the front and back of the damn thing by now! :stick:
The cards shipped were clocked at 324MHz core and 195 MHz GDDR. The RAM used was Hynix HY5DU561622CT-5 so 5ns standard clock or 200MHz. This RAM is rated for 2.5 volt operation; the core is about 1.2volts stock.
So first we go for the card mods. Most of you opted for persivores mods which gave you control over your vcore and the feedback circuit for the only power MOSFET on the card. This MOSFET had a dual task, it provided both Vdd and Vddq to the RAM onboard. This means that all the important components for successful overclocking are tied to the 3.3 volt line :slap: ; we find our first bottle neck!
I put out a mod that allowed you to utilise the onboard 5V supply to power the Vdd separately from the Vddq, this should allow for an improvement of around 15-20MHz on your clock, the mod proved to be a bit of a let down for other folk however with minimal gains to their card.
At this stage I was running 2.6 volts on the Vdd and 2.75 volts Vddq, this was netting me a max 271MHz before artifacting became a problem.
http://img154.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vddqmod6pp.jpg
Power regulation was obviously a problem for these cards and many of you noticed how bare the cards where. SoddemFX lead the way with comments of the addition of caps the boards. His recommendation at the time was anything above 500uF, I settled for some 680uF SMD caps I had, as always low ESR is advisable. I also felt that the addition of some decoupling caps for removal of high frequency was needed, and chose to use some 0.1nF ceramics on the bottom two pads in parallel with the larger electrolytic capacitors.
Having carried out these mods I could now reach 283MHz on the RAM with active cooling and copper heatsinks.
Once benching had begun it was clear that this was not going to be enough. The supply for Vmem was drooping heavily during benchmarks and the caps where obviously not enough. I decided to go all out and opt for off board power regulation.
A few chats with Persivore and I had a circuit board design planned and built, and the show could really begin
http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/9...5medium2ex.jpg
http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/4...6medium7ev.jpg
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/8...7medium1jq.jpg
The board below is capable of supplying the Vdd, Vddq and Vcore all separately. Thick wire allows for minimal voltage drop, with hindsight I should probably put feedback lines at the end of the wires but hey, theres always room for improvement. Those caps by the way are 3300uF :p
With this the RAM really freed up! 305MHz was the best it at 3.04 volts on the memory and 2.86 volts on Vddq. Success!
The core however has been something of a pain for me. On stock volts it got to 460MHz then promptly made my PC crash :s Many of you will have also no doubt noticed that an increase in the vcore reduces your memory overclock, a flaw I firmly put down to the onboard power regulator injecting noise in to the 3.3volt line. It came as a surprise to me to find that even with off board regulation this was still prevalent, if somewhat muted. As it stood I was able to raise my vcore to 1.35volts and net a 580MHz overclock. This of course was aided by the addition of a copper socket A heatsink with a big delta fan strapped to it :p some milling was required to fit it round the components on the board but it ended well.
Content that the card had reached the limits of its capability, I moved onto the software side of things.
3DMark01
This benchmark seems to thrive in a windows 2000 environment for the mobile, I tested both it and XP and stock wise 2000 had a 200 point lead to start with, so the signs say yes! People say that XP is more suitable for AMD, I have no experience perhaps those here would like comment on such matters.
Next to do is grab a copy of nLite and strip 2000 naked of all the bloat MS fees the need to attach. I removed all the OS2 and POSIX components, cus well, no one uses it! All server components, a few of the services I was certain I would never need and a lot of the language packets and support/help/etc. Melded that with SP4 and away we go! :D
Many mention the “Ricky tweak” of installing multiprocessor support on the computer to gain points, and yes this works. But what works even better is if you do it at install! Press F5 instead of F6 at boot and you can select to install for Multiprocessor here, this nets about an extra 100 points on top of the “Ricky tweak” and you don’t get the associated increased heat output! Please note however that this apparently doesn’t like SATA drives so I opted for IDE drive. You will loose next to nothing doing this, as 3DMark runs from memory.
As for drivers, for 3DMark01 cat 5.3a is considered the best, especially if you use it in conjunction with 2000. I got the standard one from ATI as Omega seem t have skipped that set for some reason, perhaps they were considered good enough already…
For overclocking I chose to use ATITool, it’s new and for the best part worked a charm, easy to use interface and lots of options to go with it, including memory timings!
Those of us who have been around will know about www.BlackViper.com, alas it seems to have disappeared off the face of the planent for some reason, the good news is that there are those who managed topull the google cached pages from the sight before they were lost too. http://www.codecavalier.com/blackvip...servicecfg.htm Look here and go for the super tweak option, this will tell you want services to shut down to maximise your scores.
There are many registry tweaks that can also be used:
• Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/Current Controlset/Control/Priority Control
• Create a DWORD Value named "IRQxPriority" where x is the IRQ of your video card, and set the value to 1.
• Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlset/Session Manager/Memory Management:
o Set DisablePagingExecutive to 1
o Set LargeSystemCache to 1
o Set SecondLevelDataCache to the decimal value of how much L2 cache your processor has.
I found these gained me nothing as regards to increases in scores, they may work for you though, as always its all about going out there and testing!
I also set priority to “realtime” and shutdown explorer, opting to run benchmarks from task manager.
When running 3DMark01, a lot can be gained from the way run it too! This is pulled from a post by Gautam:
The famous OPPAINTER let this order out of the bag on XtremeSystems:
• Dragothic Low Detail
• Lobby Low Detail
• Car Chase High Detail
• Dragothic High Detail
• Lobby High Detail
• Nature
• Car Chase Low Detail- try and run this one about 5 to 10 times, saving each result in between. It's possible to gain up to 500 points simply by repeating this test.
I’d like to point out here that I also ran nature again and it would boost my score too!
For those interested too here how the scores are calculated:
For 3DMark2001- 10 * Low Detail tests + 20 * High Detail tests + 20 * Nature
For 3DMark03- 7.3 * GT1 + GT2 * 37 + GT3 * 47.1 + GT4 * 38.7
Finally driver tweaks with catalyst do wonders! Set everything to performance, mipmaps are slightly different and if you’re using Omega drivers and such like, there’s money to be made playing with these. I just told catalyst to set them to performance and it worked out best for me. Set Cat A.I. to “high”, got a BIG boost there. Also Highland3r discovered that if you turn off fast writes you get a nice boost too!
ATItool was used to set tighter timings for the memory onboard. I found the following worked well
• TRC DRD – 4
• TRC DWR – 1
• TRP – 5 or 4
• TRAS – 7 or 8 (these are interchangeable ie 5 & 7 or 4 &8 but not 4 & 7!)
• TRRD – 1
• TRWR – 3
• TR2W - CL + 1 Clock
• TW2R – 0
• T2WR Same Rule TW2R Rule
• TR2R – 1
• MODE Reg – 0x32 (I never experimented with this, anyone has?)
• WR Latency – 1
• CAS Latency – 2
• CMD Latency – 0
• STR Latency – WR Latency
• Refresh Rate – 0x17 (Again didn’t change but could be very powerful???)
• TRFC – 13
3DMark03 and Aquamark03
The only thing I did different here was use XP (again stripped with nLite) installed Omega 5.10a drivers, as recommended by SoddemFX. I found that the Ricky tweak didn’t net me much in the way of score increase so didn’t bother with the F5 method. Again reg hacks provided nothing either.
Well I hope this is of some assistance to those of you who still care enough to play with the cards :p I fully intend to ally TECs to the core and memory and phase the Dothan try for a WR for a 9600SE, which by the way if anyone knows what that it please give me a PM!!
Just a big up to all those mentioned so far and those who helped when the P4C decided it was time to explode  I look forward to our next UK competition guys, perhaps something for the summer and from the green corner :D FX5200 anyone?
I’ll leave you with a few shots of my setup and some of the winning screenies!

Yup, the way the cards seemed to be clocking was either High core clocks and low memory or "low" core clocks and high memory. The way to get the highest score was run the memory high and the core lower, hence giving a little more weighting to the core clocks.Quote:

Nice guide there John! Gonna re-run this card soon, thanks for sharing your results with us all :D
The OC Comp mk2 will probably kick off June/July giving the whole of August for benching, and it'll be PCI-e cards
Super duper, can't wait Andy should be a great laugh. perhaps more people will commit this time too :stick:Quote:

Yeah, very interesting. The level of work you put in, no wonder you beat us all by a country mile. Loving the off board voltage stuff btw.Quote:

Highland3r, that sounds cool. July would be a great time to do it, as most all of us teenagers finish school/exams around that time, so we are finally free. PCI-E cards sound good as well. Having a worldwide jobby sounds excellent, although we'd have to use very standard and easy to obtain cards.
And not releasing the formula was best, at least it meant no-one could take advantage, as it were.
Again, thanks for everything.
Johnny Bravo, what are the IC's you used on that board?
Used latest ATI drivers, ATI tray tools with every option I can find set to "performance" :D And LOD too... The OS install was fresh for the benching, but I didn't go as far as stripping unused bits out of it.Quote:
