How about overclocking - any better?
i got it as well but didnt get the board yet, wes said the next official release will have all those options as well iirc
still no option to increase the voltage? or is the option there but doesnt do anything?
What are the differences between the shipping bios and the beta one? Does the beta bios allow high HTT with 1T 1:1? What options are you talkin' about Saaya?
The option to overvolt CPU is there even in the shipping bios but only gives 0.1 more.
i dont know, i havent tried the bios wes sent me, as i said, i dont have the board yet, i expect to get it on tuesday...
wes said something about all the extra options in that bios beeing available in the next official release or something.
good news :)
beta bios link ?
well I've gotten back to 2.6Ghz but I can only get the ram to run at 2T, this is with the OCZ 2GB PC4000 Platnium Kit, oh well, maybe a bios update will fix my problems ( CPU and ram worked perfectly on my NF4 at 260 1T 1:1 )
the +0.2 vcore thing doesn't work with the bios Wes sent at least with the opteron.
i have a 3700+ SD that I will test next. will let you guys know.
Soon as I get the bioa I will test it
you have private message! :)Quote:

so far i'm gonna have to give this board a big thumbs down.
Anyone want to be a pal and email it to me?
I got the board installed last night and its been pretty decent so far. I can onlt get 1.45v on an opty 170 though. So im currently stuck at 2.6ghz which is what i got on my neo4.

okay. the new bios is no good with bh-5/6 memory.
if this is true of anyone else, please post.
i've flashed back to the original one and errors are all gone now.
This is my first A64 adventure, so I'm a bit lost in overclocking right now. I'm working on figuring it all out, but I'm happy with the board overall. Anyone else notice some fairly bad interference on the audio, though? A large part of why I bought this board was the HD audio, as I didn't want to buy a sound card too. Maybe I will if they don't resolve this in future driver updates.
Still haven't got C&Q working either. lol
The board definitely clocks the ram with all 4dimms full to 2t and less than 1:1.Quote:

Strange about the 3700+
Any updates concerning 1T @ 280Mhz and more 1:1?
I was using 2 x 512 corsair bh-6.Quote:

i wonder if running 2T would solve my problem.
either way, this board is on the shelf for the time being.
also, this board killed my 3700+. :( (not sure exactly how). i put the 3700+ into my DFI board and the board wouldn't boot when I hit power. took it out and stuck in my opteron and board booted again.
sigh.
the cost of killing hardware is so expensive sheesh!
i hope the new official bios is more friendly to bh-5/6.
i even tried 1 stick at a time and it still gave errors :(
what the heck is going on with these new boards killing cpus?Quote:

not jumping yet, but the boards officially off my to-buy list if something else dies.
Well, if it never booted with the 3700+ I wouldn't jump to conclusions that it somehow killed it. Could be unsafe handling or something. I assume this is an isolated report which would lead to it being more chance/static than anything.
no, the thing that's horrible (and imo has always been horrible) is DFI's shoddy engineering (to the extent that even ATI recommends that users keep clear of their Xpress board). Sure they give you a lot of tweaking options and are at times innovative (such as teh 4 DS dimms at 1T) but you always get unwanted "bonus features" (like the killer CPU thing or flakey stability or pickiness with RAM an so on).Quote:

yeah i agree. it was unexpected. it booted up a couple of times before the board shut off (as if the thermal protection was kicking in).Quote:

i don't blame the board for that. i'm not angry about that at all to be honest.
its just that i couldn't get my bh-6 stable with this board. i ran superpi 1M with moderate overclock and underclocked mem settings and i still couldn't finish 1M even once. i tried 1 stick, 2 sticks, different slots, EVERYTHING.
i'm back on my dfi board and the chip is running flawlessly again with my mem.
overall, i'd rate this board a 7/10 but that's only after 1 day of use.
like i said, no one else has reported any problems with running bh-5/6 yet so it might just be my board.
Might try RMA?
According to pcprobe ive been getting vcore spikes. I have itset to 1.4v plus over voltage enabled in bios which gives me a 1.45v reading in windows. If i leave pcprobe on for a while, the alarm goes off and vcore shows upto be 1.55v. This has happened to me 2 times yesterday. The board has been okay so far imo. Its dual prime stable but i get random lockups. I dont think its a power issue since im running a seasonic s12 600w. Although i should say it locks up when i start pcprobe or when pcprbe has been running. It hasnt locked up when pc prbe isnt running so its prolly just that program crashing my rig.
I should also add my BIOS bug findings. When using 2 sticks of ram in sinle channel mode, the dividers and command rate cannot be changed. You can change it in bios but it has no affect. Moving a ram stick over to dual channel mode, dividers and command rate works again.
Are you guys leaving ECC enabled? It seems it only enables other options which are off by default so it seems like it wouldnt matter if it was enabled or disabled?
maybe it hads to do with your mem beeing pc2700?
and what exactly happened with the cpu that died?
you were running it where and then did what and then it died?
cpu had no IHS. worked flawlessly in my dfi ultra-d board.Quote:

so either bad contact killed the chip or something else. not quite sure.

My rig has been rebooting alot lately. Its just quirky. I think it is somehow related to the LAN drivers. When i first formatted, windows update found a new driver for the lan so i installed it. With that new driver installed, the pc will hang anytime i have multiple downloads going. I did a driver roll back and it seems to have fixed that problem. Now i cant run winamp, it always crashes with some error. When i look at the error report, it says something aboout invalid IP? Im confused about this board. Ill give it another week or so and if it keeps giving me problems ill try the DFI or sapphire board.
No issue for me as far.
except to low vcore settings ;)
THis is really wierd everyone having issues but mine is running flawlessly after beating it over the head for a couple hours.
Well lets see how things go when saaya gets his and the x1600pro cards.
Mine runs perfect too. I have a SD 3700+ in it. No freezing, no reboots, no vcore spikes (though the vcore is about .05v higher than settings), no download problems.
However, a lot of settings don't seem to actually change their values. I can not undervolt at all. It just stays at 1.4 in bios which is 1.45 in Windows.
P.S. I did get C&Q working now. It was my own fault it wasn't before, didn't know about the Windows power management settings.
So, it runs well, but it's not perfect.
Anyone else having some audio problems with the onboard? I get a lot of static/interference. Well, maybe a lot is an overstatement, it's not really noticable in any games, but for music it's easy for my ears to pick up. Also, Why on earth does it beep once at me every boot up? And another thing, since I plugged in the PSU fan monitoring cable at the bottom of the board, my 7800GT fan doesn't slow down in Windows like it did before. I haven't unplugged it yet to see if that goes away, but anyone else have that issue either?
And is it just me, or is it wierd that all CPU multis are unlocked in BIOS, but changing them above maximum just doesn't do anything? Either lock the settings, or let the changes I make work (ie. vcore undervolting).
Anyway, back to the games. :)
from your post its obvious you havent been in the hardware loop for a while :DQuote:

No problems here neither, lan driver is the one that came in the CD, didn't try sound as of yet so don't know about audio glitches, if it wasn't for the 1T issue when running high HTT 1:1 the board would be just what i hoped it would be.
so it doesnt run high htt with 1t?
Except for the Anandtech review i saw noone running more than 260 HTT 1:1 and i couldn't with 2 different boards.Quote:

Well been running mine for several days now as well.. Everything has worked fine so far, but my current ram is has never ran for squate on 1T on any board, got some more ram coming on wed, so we will see then.. Just did the vcore mod, couldnt stand the 1.55v limit (smallest volt mod I have done thus far, but wasnt as bad as i had feared), did not have any VR here, so I just used a 10k ohm resistor instead, gives me max vcore of 1.71v on my winnie and FX set at max volts (1.45v + overvolt).. Now I can actually see what this board can do. I have not witnessed any spikes on vcore before or after mod? Anyone else other than Hybrid?
Anyone else notice that no matter what volts your running, cpu-z doesn not read past 1.45v... I just thought it was not picking up the overvolt, but even at 1.7v cpu-z still says 1.45 but speedfan and bios read 1.71v?
Same here with cpuz.Quote:

I've tried the beta, I can't get 1t stabel even at 240Mhz, used the same voltage that i used with my Neo4 and no go, even the voltage for my opteron stayed the same, max is about 1.5ish
I set the ram to 2t and everything seems ok so far, no reboots. My settings are 10x260 with 1.4v + OV enabled and 166 ram divider. So my ram is only running at 216 mhz with 2t timings which is crappy imo. I hope asus gets this fixed soon.
*edit* It locked up 2x in the last 10 mins at 2t timings. Im about to throw this board out the window.
damn that sux...
might need a chipset voltage mod for higher 1t maybe?
and the divider thing with 4 dimms should be moddable in bios, we just gotta find somebody with bios skills :D
Unless you bought ECC specific ram you dont need this enabled... unless you are referring to ECC for L2..Quote:

the onboard lan on a lot of asus boards locks up with the newer versions. use an older version, not the one windows autoinstallsQuote:

Have to run 2.5/4/4/8
The sticks can run 2.5/4/3/5 at 300 1:1 on the ulra-d.
SO I think achipset mod is in order
nice!
290 with 1t is def nice, any idea what settings were needed for that?
does the board just hate bh5 for high 1t?

Thanks
Anyone know how to check to see if the board is locking the PCI speeds corectly? I am getting alot of crackle from my audigy and wanted to see if that could be a reason
Thats what im thinking. It could explain why my rig can pass prime for 16 hours at 2.6ghz but then crash as soon as i use winamp or my tv tuner, both of which are pci devices. It could also explain why all my internet browsers crash since the LAN runs off the pci bus. Either way this board doesnt live up to the hype in my case.
Hmm, wonder if Sandra Sisoft will list the PCI bus speed?
OK.. Very disappointed so far.. Max stable HTT I can seem to get is around 275mhz... No matter what LDT or what memory divider im running.. With an FX and unlocked multies, i can live with that, BUT heres where Im stuck... I have tried UTT,UCCC, and Micron D modules in this board... All of them no matter what timings, what divider, volts etc they are maxing out around 235mhz?? The Micron did 280 no other boards, my gskill with the samsung are new so not sure what they can do, but I cant even get them to run stock 250mhz at any timings?
Whats everyone elses memory results so far, how the heck did they pull off 325 in that review? Starting to think more and more they had a cherry picked board.. Anyone found a chipset voltage readpoint? Wonder how much volts are running through it?
this is where i am right now, this is 1:1 but no 1T still.

What LDT are you running? southbridge overvolt on or off? Also what ram is that? Nice!! glad to see someone is atleast getting good results.
I am running it at 600Quote:

LDT is 600, southbridge overvolt is on but i noticed if i set auto next time i enter the bios it sets itself on enabled don't know if it only starts acting like this at a minimum speed, ram is Centon TCCD 507 on B6U808, well, i would call it good results if it would run 1T but i wouldn't call it bad either.Quote:

Anyone have that beta bios, that supposedly hates bh-5? I cannot get my 2 gig set of gskill with UCCC to boot at anything over 225 and if I use A64 tweaker to try to change the divider to put it at 250 or anything over 225 I get instant reboot? But A64tweaker works fine when im at a lower fsb... Want to see if that bios will help..
sure, along with dozens of other features of your system, but its all a guess and not based on reading out your hardware.Quote:

Ok wierd issue maybe someone can shed some light on here.. 300htt X 10 using the 166 divider my ram is at 250mhz... then using NF4 clockgen to change the multi to 11X and my ram drops to 235 using the same divider... Also verified when using 11X300 with the 166 divider via the bios, i get the same results 235.7mhz? Anyone have an idea of whats going on here?
Oh seems I resolved the UCCC over 235mhz, had to set Read Preamble to 9.5ns and Max Async Latency to 10ns.... these seem kinda high, but dont know whats normal for these modules? Anything less on either is unstable past 235.
Erh. Some math stuff related to the memcontroller... :)Quote:

So far this is my superPI 32M, 3d/benchmark, and a few hours prime stable (need to let it run overnight) max clocks on this board:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y85...newdesktop.jpg
The highest i have had HTT has been 330hz, didnt thouroughly test it for stability though.. 335 with LDT of 2X would not boot..
After a vcore mod and taking some time to play with memory timings/settiings boards not bad.. Hopefully Asus will address some issues in later bios releases like the 1T and maybe add the extra dividers that are in the beta bios... I have not tried the beta bios, cant find anyone that has a copy of it, but I heard it did not play nicely with BH-5/UTT but wonder how it is with CE-6 or UCCC?
bios screenshots?
Is anyone getting higher vcore with the bios going around?
If so can I get it?
The board wont boot with ldt 400.
I will test the other ram today see how it goes.See if my 1t holds

Im running a 2 gigs of Gskill HZ (2 X 1gig) and i cant get them stable past 255 on this board... I have hell booting from a cold boot with them at anything over 235? Hopefully its just a bios issue, but if i want the board to boot every time with no issues, im stuck at ram speends limited to 235mhz.. Ive tried all multies within reason and all dividers.. Makes no difference.. If the rams over 235 and i boot a cold boot, it just hangs, power down and power back up and it boots with fail safe settings?
It took setting Preamble to 9.5ns and Max Async Latency to 10ns just to get 255 stable? Hoping that that beta bios might help with this... Also with 1T enable and laxed timings and ram at 200mhz, SuperPI 1M fails instantly??
Ahh fellas, if only Tony could give a look at that bios and make a little of his magic.
Here are my 4 dimms up an running, gksill and twinmoss.

Try this ...start at 200 and set your ddr voltage manually ...I keep mine at 2.7v (2gb redline ddr-500). Also set your multi and vcore manually and enable the overvolting.Quote:

Reboot and re-enter bios and up your ram 10mhz at a time (210-220-230 ...etc) rebooting each time and once you hit 250 go to 255 next. You may or may not be able to take it to 257-258 but you might. From this point you can try 400htt but don't expect to get 600 ...you really shouldn't even need to mess with it.
After that run a membench and see what you get. I doubt there is much you can do after that to get much more bandwidth from that ram. 1t and tighter timings may give you a slight bit more but they also might get you unstable.
I've been testing this day after day for the past week and this is what I've come up with ...it doesn't seem like much but the bandwidth is great!
I've managed to get to 260 with 48.85 latency ...10400 chip bandwidth and 8320 mem bandwidth.
edit:\ to get to 260 I used 2.9v and rebooted from 257 @ 1mhz per reboot to get there using the creep method above ...and I leave it at 200htt cause it makes no difference.

Bios 0309 up here:
ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/pub/ASUS/mb/socket939/A8R-MVP/
Anyone got a working clockgen for this board??
New Bios opens up new memory multipliers, no new voltage options.
Good news is that I am priming my 170 @ 2.6ghz where before I was getting instant prime errors at the same settings.
~260MHz 2.5-4-4-7 1/1 1T is max bootable for me.
Pretty worthless compaired to the DFI NF4 boards :(
The new bios is total crap for me. It wont boot at 2.6ghz anymore.
If this board can do 320 1:1 i'm selling my 2 new Ultra-D
It cant. It's one of the worst 939 boards I've ever had.Quote:

Wil try the new bios
Well the new dividers over 200 do not even work right for me? for example 250 is 133, same as it was for the beta bios? Whey would they even bother adding something like that if its not going to work righ or am I missing something here? Anyone else actually have luck with the new dividers?
have you guys tried adjusting trc and trfc? On Neo2's those changed dynamically depending on clock and divider which caused a lot of problems....
OK somewhat good news.. I flashed to the newest bios yesterday.. And this morning my system actaully booted up at 11 X 300 with ram at 253mhz (183 divider) without the usual cold boot problem where it would not boot with memory over 230ish?? Could be a coincidence though..
Flashed 0309 last night and at my previously 13h prime stable settings (290x10 1:1 2T) prime would fail in a matter of seconds, 295 that would fail prime in seconds before wouldn't even make it to windows desktop with 0309.
Flashed back to 0201 and voila, back to normal.
Well done ASUS, nice step back :slapass:
0037 bios uploaded, crap with BH5 but good with TCCD UCCC Infineon etc. Its beta and use at your own risk.

Well, no luck either with 0037 running 1T above 255HTT here, it's performing almost the same as 0201 wich is still the best for me it seems.
Thanks again for hosting the bios Tony.
still the same for me
