Hi, new to Xtreme been been lurking for quite sometime (takes forever to get the account active....).

I am planning to build a new pc, and the opty 175 is what I wanted. In Canada I've searched for 146,148,165,170 and 175 opty's. I found ONE place that has/had 3 opty 175's, and havn't found nothing else! :clap:

My 175 should be here by the end of the week. Can't test, but hoping for the CCBWE maybe?... My source will let me send it back if someone knows it's a bad stepping, but that is tough to say since not many people have a 175.

I will not be able to test until my new Mobo comes in, which won't be for 2-3 weeks :slap:

The opty 175 is skued if you search for it on insight.ca, but it does not show stock, though they did have 3 (not sure if it will show stock online... since they have lots of distributors... supposedly the opty 175 distributor was in Toronto, but they wouldn't tell me the name - though it was not a retail place anyways...)

Yeah, was hoping for the 0530, we will see I guess.

That's my observations as well. 0530TPMW's are CABNE 0530 of the dual core world.. I don't think it is coincidence they were made same week... 0530 :p:

can a 170 be ccbwe 0530? are you more likely to get a better chip with a retail box? i ask because monarchs 170 oem+3year warranty is almost the same price as mwaves 170 retail. also, do these opterons have more hypertransport links than the athlons? thanks.

Always buy retail.. 3 years warranty plus you get like a $20 HSF you can sell. It's pretty nice with heat pipes and relativly quiet.

I ordered a 170 from monarch last night and it shipped today. I don't know about the 165s, but I didn't have any trouble. Well, the chip is getting here thursday, but I'm not going to have much chance to test it till next week! Tell you all about it then!

You can but you don't have to. I don't do it. It only lowers temps several degrees anyway.

Assuming your temps are low, you have some more head room voltage wise. I'd take it up as far as 1.55V so long as you are still getting more clockspeed. Mine starts getting crashy when I go too high, so I have a good feel when I need to back down.

Look at OCAU.com. They have a big Opteron thread, and the first post has some results compiled. If only that jerk at dfi-street would have the consideration to do the same...

So what are considered safe temps with the dual core Opterons? The mfg spec is like 67C. With my Opt165 @ 2.5ghz, 1.4v I already hit 54C. Aircooled with an XP-90.

After my current upgrade of DFI's new SLI-DR Expert board, some Geil One RAM, and an Opteron 146 CABYE, I'm going dual core. I can only afford about $300 on the proc though. Obviously these are at least equal to the 3800+ ... does anyone have any realworld benchmarks of the dual-core Opteron vs. X2?? Or really any real-world benches to compare with known X2 benches?

The 165 Opty and the 3800+ X2 are about the same price, and seem, from the clock speeds, to be about the same -- but the cache makes the Opty better in my eyes, though I'm closer to a n00b than a Guru so my opinion is moot.

I loved Doom 3 and Quake 4 is fun as hell, so I'd obviously see performance gains in those no matter which dual-core I went with. But which is better for everyday tasks, like ripping DVD's and encoding and all that fun schtuff?

I'd take the clockspeed over the cache any day.

Here are my Opteron versus 512 KB cache chip benchmarks. They don't have a 165 but they have 2.0 GHz dual Opterons and they have a 939 single-core Opteron, against Venice and x2 3800+:

As you can see, none of my real world apps take much advantage of the cache, with the exception of compiling the Linux kernel. But even if that 200 MHz more clockspeed do better than the bigger cache.

Just from skimming those benchmarks.. theres a lot more there than is needed to prove the extra 512 cache isn't that useful. Its not even very uniform.

I'de take the extra cache over an extra 200mhz. With apps and games getting larger by what seems like the month, it will probably be more useful in a year or two. If you're going for benches and replace cpus a few times a year, then I'de take the mhz.

plus, the dual core opys are ocing pretty well!

Just took off the IHS for the first time.. not sure how good the contact is between the CPU / Heatsink. (Scythe Ninja)

Seemed to help alittle, not sure if it was really worth destroying my AMD warranty.. Oh well. (Was my first time removing the IHS.. ) :)

I think you mix up ECC with registered/buffered.

Socket 940 CPUs require registered/buffered RAM and can do ECC or non--ECC.

Socket 939 and socket 754 CPUs require unregistered/unbuffered RAM and can do ECC or non-ECC. Most 939 and 754 mainboards do not support ECC but you can still use ECC modules (error correction just doesn't happen).

Its alright for u guys theres no sign off any dual core opterons here in the UK :mad: and i had just convinced myself to get a 4800x2 because off fading mem controllers and the dual core opterons get released, well in your neck off the woods surpose I will have to wait longer for the release of the A8N32 than u guys too - and to top it all the Asus 'Extreme TOP Edition' nVidia GeForce 7800GTX 256MB has gone out off stock and is unavailible.

Just when u decide what u want its all out off stock or not in the UK :mad: :mad: :mad:

Don't you have anyone in the US? If so just send them the cash and have them buy/ship them to you. I'm not sure how much duty you'll have to pay, though.

That is what I am doing and shipping here. We have to pay the VAT which is 17.5 in UK and in my case 21% ( we have to pay taxes twice in US and in EU.... :slapass: )

Just fired up an Opty 170 – CCBWE 0530TPMW.

Haven’t had much time but it’s a slam 10@270 at stock voltage…..Been running Prime for 20 min. 9 X 310 (2790) @ 1.42 and looking good so far. I’ll put it under water and take some pics after it runs a few hours………. ;)

anyone put over 1.56V in it yet? my chip doesn't seem to like any more voltage.

Right now I'm prime stable at 2.75 GHz 1.56V.. trying to get 2.8 stable UGH.

Well I just took a trip to Monarch after work...

They still have some good steppings.

I have an Opteron 146 CABYE 0540FPAW :)

I googled my stepping, and someone managed 2.9 GHZ on stock voltage (scroll down a bit):

Results are in the sig...I think the overclock is more limited by the boards lack of desire to go any higher than the CPUs themselves...

Still...good for 1164 fps in DVDShrink 3.2 during my last speed test...:)

hmm.. didn't notice the 165s at newegg are oem. Thats no good for me.. imo the 170 retail at monarch is the best bet. I'de take the extra mhz/binning + 3 year warranty for an extra $100.

Dumb observation... Newegg's stock might even be newer than that.. I'm not sure how relevant it is, but the picture is of a CCBWE 0541RPMW. I'm sure that doesn't speak for their entire stock, but I imagine they took the pic.

Newegg might not be the best choice since they sell way more than others and need to replenish their stock more often. I'd say that they run out of older stock quicker.

BTW I'm trying hard to get my 170 past 2844 and it's not going anywhere... any tips you gurus can share?

yeah im thinking about jumping on the 165 dualy but its a 9x multi thats the only draw back. anyone with the 165 dualy got an good over clocks to help me decide on getting one of these?!? i would feel alot better if these were 2gig chips with 10x multi but 9x thats just asking for dividers and 1:1 is only going ot get me 2700mhz.... dammit what to do....? help :)

Mabey not, B/C Newegg just got these in which may be still from the first batch. Even so 289 for a 2.6-2.7 DC A64 W/ 1MEG L2 cache is damn nice IMO, betting the X2 3800 by about 50$ or so.

Thanks. I was a little bit disappointed for some reason. I wanted to see the 2900 barrier broken but I didn't succeed. I'll run Prime overnight and will post the shot tomorrow.

I like those experts but the awkward socket position turns me off. My HSF blows the hot air right out of my exhaust fans now but then it will blow it up or downward.

Not if you use something like a scythe Ninja, then you can put the fan on any of the 4 sides, and have a nice push pull right across your ram ;)

I don't think so. Heat pipes cover two opposite sides which in this case will sit right on the mounting holes.

Ok... I will keep my 0536 XPMW and my board (a8n32) is suppose to be in Wednesday next week (15 nov.)

I got it from Dangeo... they are ONLY getting 2!!! Whoot for me! Too bad for those that don't like Pre-Orders...
So I will have the A8N32, and I may get the DFI Expert as well just cause I can and I know I can re-sell either one...

So, by next weekend I should have results on my 175.... (air for now)
