We won't know for quite some time, if ever ;)
Both the R520 & R580 were always designed to be what most people call "16 pipe" cards. However their internal design makes them very different from what everyone here thinks of pipes.
Well, that would be once solution to the problem. The other would be increasing the clock (The path the CPU vendors were taking, up until recently). Though, it's always better to have one core running at twice the frequency, rather than two cores running at regular frequency. Of course, neither is the case here. Nvidia didn't exactly doublethe number of pipes with the 7800GTX, and ATi didn't exactly double the frequency either. So both companies are a day late and a buck short, in that sense.Quote:

Edit: Though, that is probably not the case, and ATi has been talking about "new pipelines that are 1.5x as effecient as old pipelines" or something along those lines. So, they're also making architectural changes within the pipelines themselves. Though, we're still going to call 16 pipelines 16 pipelines :)
So . anyone got one of these cards or not? Nvidia still looks the goods to me atm anyway, i cant see how it is king YET, but more will come no doubt
What do you mean??? Q4 = modified Doom3 engine...Quote:

On another note, Newegg is selling X1800XL for a LOT less than $500, so please stop saying that it'll cost more than $500, thx ;)

Went from $450 or so to $439
note : doom3 was probably one of the most borring games i've ever played... i don't see why they even bench it, unless nvidia asks reviewers to do so...Quote:

Personally, I can't imagine the card draws THAT much (160).. where would it be coming from? The PEG only supplies 75 and the additional power connector surely cant supply more than 50. I'm also surprised that in comparison the X1800XL which is now FINALY available in stores, consumes much less power (and hence produces much less heat).. nearly half. The folks at xbitlabs seem convinced the major reason is the increased amount of RAM (512MB). But, I think the major contributor is once again the GPU, because to get such high Mhz they probably increased the voltage. And, we all know power increases quadriatically with increased voltage.
Re: X1800XT XF (crossfire)
A secret team of nuclear physists and astro-mathematicians was working in the basement laboratory of ATI on a X1800XT XF for the official paper-launch Oct5. They worked long-dreary nights in the confines of the underground laboratory, and the night before the launch they may have achieved success. The custodians found the premises empty, a hot scorched spherecal shape etched into the laboratory bench. Current investigators believe that the huge waves of anisotropic filtering flux ruptured the space time continuum, sending the twin cards and their creators into an antialiased dimension. Some personal at the headquarters are panicking, based on wild rumours that when merged into one system, the two ATI cards became self-aware, and when the testers tried to pull the plug, that the twin video cards, used temporal antialiasing effect to open the wormhole to escape "death". Scientists are still investigating the reminent alpha transperancy anti-aliasing effects evidence. Although we dont know who delt the first blow, we know that we were the ones who scorched the dreary world of linear rendering with a beautiful HDR sky.
nice little pull from the Matrix at the end there. ;)
their are other ways of putting different filters in the same paragraph, i can already think of 5 which don't include smoking something illegal :DQuote:

This could just mean that I might actually be able to afford an X1800 Pro or an LE.

I heard that in this distant research facility, after ATi had finished the final 10% of the R520, a team of Marines was also sent in to shoot anything that might escape..........Quote:
