if your nr1 PR leaves and he knows the details of your next gen card, and a few weeks later the competition releases a countermeasure for that card along with info about your product.......
I'm guessing a judge's mind'll be made up fairly quick concerning things like this
I kind of doubt it Entity, considering ATi KNOWS that NVidia have a counter measure for the R520, and told it to the investors during the shareholders meeting.... The guy could tell them everything about the card and there would be no way to prove it.

Ive said my 2 cents, ill say it again. ATI really is in trouble in the high end and midrange. I know most people buy low end but high end is where all the publicity is at. The latest rumors show ATI with a 600/1400 maximum clocked x1800xt with 16 pipes. Nvidia might not even bother lauching the 7800 ultra because they dont consider the x1800xt a threat as its slightly slower than 7800gtx!

Random question, but arent the markings on the core usually the other way up, ie in the pic above, the ATI bit is usually the right way up?

Obviously not all of this will happen, but even a card with some of those specs would be a great card.
Have faith in ATi. They may not give us a worldbeater right out of the gate, but whatever they give us will certainly be competitive with(and probably slightly better than) the GTX.

It's very possible the xl and xt have the same amount of pipelines this time.
I wonder how well it will preform in linux and bsd, because I know literally 5,000 linux users that would drop their nVidia graphics cards If they knew beyond a doubt that in linux the R520 would compete with or be better than the 7800GTX

Well that doesn't make much sense....theoretical fillrate is ~7% higher with the 32 pipes and it would seem that 32 pipes would be a good selling point or something....go figure.

That card still exists....they just can't make enough of them (and the die and PCB have changed since then). There ARE cards out there with 32pp, they just can't clock particularly high (killing the vertex pipes' capability since they can all be enabled). It seems to already be apparent that there is little dynamic clocking in this core--otherwise they would crank up the vertex pipes while keeping the pixel pipes lower. That at yields at 32pp are probably zilch, even at the lower speed.Quote:

i highlighted the 24pipe becasue of the info that says it scores 8600...so 10k WOULD be 32 pipes, at about the same speed. that would make you guess pretty much right on. must take one hella a cooler tho.

Just impossible. If this would be the case they will either ask 1000 euros per card or they would go bellyup. They'd have to scrap HUGE amounts of silicon and re-use them. A procces costing A ENOURMOUS ammount of money. SO if the yield would be 25% I'm sure they'd Rebin it (YES AGAIN) or just scrap it all at once...
it only cost $0.25 to make one chip...

R&D is costly I know, but a chip does not cost .25 USD to make.
As said before me 300mm wafers alone cost A LOT of money.
The silicon undergoes refining, polishing, getting every single piece of garbage out if it, then being made into a pilar like item and then cut into wafers , you don't honestly think that production is cheap do you? And we haven't even come to the part where they actually put something ON the wafer....
I'm not saying a core cost 200 USD to make but still..... it isn't cheap and nor is the recycling procces of the failed chips.
BTW theres more to a chip then just the making :) as said the silicon itsself, packaging, also items that need to be dealth with
The more reasonable number I heard (cant remember where or in what context) is that most modernd GPUs/CPUs cost about $70-90 per die. At that rate you are looking at a loss of $210-270 per card. That has to be re-couped some how...Quote:
