thanks!
i run my comp a good 16hrs a day and i'll put folding on my file sever in the loft when i can be bothered to drag it down.

Good that you got that sorted walt :)
And :welcome: switch7

Hello All,
I have been coming here trolling the so thought I should give back by join the team.

Hi I just started folding a few days ago and I was wondering how much of a difference going to a dual core cpu whould make ? Atm i'm using a 3200+. Also has anyone seen what the conroe can do with folding@home ?
I just started running. Will be left on a lot. Opty 165 @ 2745 mhz. Hope this helps! My username is norse for stats I believe.
Also, I noticed it's not using both cores, how do I fix this?
@ THX1138: In theory, it should run twice as fast. I'm not sure what a conroe would do in F@H.
@ norse: load it twice (there should be a guide around here on how to load it twice).
Welcome to all the new faces!
hey guys i just started folding for xtremesystems hopefully i can get a couple of
computers so i can leave them on over night.. but i got a question how much bandwitdh does it use?
F@H uses very little bandwidth, only when uploading and downloading data.
Welcome to the new members. If we keep growing we can get into the top 100,that is our next goal. :toast:
Hi, i have no idea what this is about.. :) could someone plz explain what is folding? who does it? benefit? thx
Folding uses protein structures to help find out cures for diseases and such. It benefits mankind. There are many different folding projects. This one is ran by Stanford.
O what a shame, I'm folding for Team 596 and currently we are getting owned by Vietnam. It's basically a back and forth thing - we need more GHz :slap:
How about last link at my sig... would that help at understanding project: F@H.Quote:

But please do explain and lemme know if good ol' Socket A can help for a week or two!

Welcome to the team Moonraker
You can download the app here: http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html I always use the text-only client, to get going just throw it in a folder ( C:\fah\ ) and run the exe, it'll run you through a brief setup. Team # is 36362, thats the crucial bit, & your username of course. Check UnG's setup guide in sc00p's sig for more details on setup etc.

( We'll be on page 1 soon :D )
OK, having said that. I did the Graphic interface install and it says (after 15mins!!) 5 frames completed. Is that right? Here's a screenie:
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/757/1stfoldve8.jpg
Also, how does the points system work? - I know I won't be giving much on a Socket A - Athlon XP 3000+
Yes that looks right, some wus take along time.
Regards
John.
Just joined up, I have 2 Conroe cores (E6600 at 3.2 ghz) running and a Northwood 3 Ghz P4. I also have a 800 mhz PIII lying around, would it even be worth hooking it up?
Yes definitely worth it. I have a 700MHz P3 running - well not at the moment, having some trouble with it :( - but while it can't do stuff really fast it can still be productive :)Quote:

Welcome to the team miochza, we should see you on the Top20 producers list soon with that C2D folding away.
hi to all of you! as u can see i'm quite a freshman here but it's time to change that. am passionate about folding for a long time now, been on seti before. i'm kinda loner on the folding, always been on my own, never joined any teams as i've been searching for the proper one, and my search has come to an end at the number 36362. i've folded almost 50k point which i'll gladly contribute to this team, the only thing is i can't join right now as i'm runing a console version of fah on this poor old sempron 2800 @ 2.2 and a don't think there is an option to join enywhere there. i think u people will give me some ideas how to do it. also i will put some stress of folding on my dad's laptop which he'll get shortly and my own new E6300 that i plan to get it runing by next weekend and OC the heck out of it, probably on P5B-D, just hope it goes high on those Mhz's. can't wait to compare the time to complete a WU with this pore rig. we'll that's my first post, am glad of meeting you all and see you soon. B-bye!
Welcome to the team Hadron. I too ave just joined, but my first WU is taking forever on this system I'm on (I'm building my C2D rig behind me now! lol) - I'm folding right now, I feel like I've just graduated from the academy and have just got my debut (lol).
I dunno how it works for Americans... maybe ummm... graduated from college and "drafted" ?!?!?!?
Either way, I don't feel worthy of the team until that first WU is done! - but I do feel part of the team
Welcome, well come Moonraker, miochza and hadron :welcome:
First of all, it is great you decided to join to this team. It is about a time to have some shine and glory to our team... and you (all) help very much... and science is the most benefiaciry :toast:
Hadron: look at my sig. UnG's f@h setup guide. There is some pics about phases to do. You could join to the team just starting your console by adding a -configonly -flag to your console (then the console won't install itself again), for exsample c\folding\fah504-console.exe -configonly... and input the right team number at second row :)
that's nice Moonraker, i think u wont have problems producing some decent results with that new gear thats under construction.
thanks sc00p for the guide but i had a flashback just after writing my post that there must a .cfg file in the fah folder and surely there was, so i just changed the teamnumber there and it's seem to work as the console is puting me now to this team. just have to complete this wu to make it official as the fah server is still taking me for a loner. too bad it's a tough wu, taking an hour for one percent and only 53% done. just can't wait, for the new pc's as we got some conqering to do.
just installed f@h ;)
I'm in guys

@jbmv, I'd just like to say that I don't like you and your production rate very much. I've been watching your progress with utter distaste. You'll be flying past me soon and there's nothing I can do about it!!! :(

...Just jokin' man, way to go. You're up there, frequently (if not always ) at no. 2 for production. XS needs you and we appreciate it! I really am joking above :). Pure jealousy/envy ;)

Should I enable -advmethods?
And should I make a clean Windows install for folding, as i'll plan to run overnight ~8 hrs a day.
Does anybody have any advice on "how I could persuade my parents to let me run this noisy box every night?" should i just turn the fans down?
im proud to be folding for team 36362!
thanks,
jc
Configs look fine. As to the parental units, what is their issue? If it's the noise, then turning down the fans may help as long as it isn't the HSF. Conversely, you could just pull the Mobo out of the case and and use a tower HS with a 120mm fan for cooling-real quiet, works great. Then they might have a problem with the "eyesore" however... :p:
One of the guys on the [H] team that's got a big farm says that you get better WUs by not setting the -advmethods flag, as long as you have the -bigWU flag set.
You don't really need a clean install, but if you want to, you can. Just to make sure that there isn't any spyware or such stealing your precious cycles.
As for the parents, just tell them that it will keep the room warm overnight, so they can turn the thermostat lower. :D
:welcome: to the team!
Really? Hmm, maybe I should try that on my systems. I'll disable the -advmethods flag on a couple of them and see if anything changes.Quote:

Ooh another Southwester :toast:
I think I've gotten the go ahead.
Got EM3/Chime up and FahMon (which is better; I somewhat prefer Fahmon's simpler interface, less plastic gunk)
Completed to 23500000 on p2126 villin sigd3
is ~24 mins per a frame ok? 40 hours for a WU? C2D @ 3.7 GHz, cut down background tasks.
jc
Funny I've never gotten project 2126  But 40 minutes per percentage point (frame) doesn't sound out of place but I don't know how fast the C2D chips fold. How many points is it?
*EDIT* haha I said that and fold1 just downloaded 2126 :lol2: 373 pointer, hmm... Wonder if it is as bad as 2124 and 2125, probably considering the numbers are close and I have a feeling that means they are part of the same group - slow.
o well; ill let it run. EM3 predicts finish at about 4:30 PM tmrw (its 7:42 PM now).
In FahMon under fahmon > benchmarks you can see what the average PPD is on that project for your system once it is done with the WU. When it is, could you report back what it says so we can compare it? Thanks :)
I got a 2125 for both cores of my main rig :(. Sorry to drag a bit...
New teamie alert.........
Please give an xtreme welcome to buick454wnos :)
Hi Everybody,
I just signed up. I am new to folding, so I have to learn all the tips and tricks. I bring with me a couple of AMD dual cores, one older S940 Opteron quad core and the Kentsfield I am putting together below.
Yes, the machines are being put to good use, and while the show-off appeal is there, I don't put together machines to boost my ego, or else I would need to get my head examined. I have a household of heavy computer users.
I guess I'm late to the game, but better late than never, right?
I do need to learn how to optimize machines for multiple cores because I am an absolute newbie here (really, never done it before), even though I know how to build machines (obviously).
Dual cores & quad cores :D Welcome to the team IanY
A basic setup would consist of making as many folders as you have cores, and copying the downloaded fah.exe file into each folder, then run each client & it'll start with the configuration. Enter your preffered name, team number 36362, don't use IE proxy settings (unless these are genuinely required) & DO edit the advanced settings. Each client on the same machine, must have a different machine ID (1-8); otherwise the box gets confused with multiple clients running. If you have x86_64bit linux running you will want to look into the SMP client which is still in beta but yields good points. Hope this goes some way to help
Welcome to the team!
Welcome to the fold IanY :)
Benchmark for 2126 on 'Main' (see sig.)
-- Main1 --
Min. Time / Frame : 25mn 23s - 211.60 ppd
Avg. Time / Frame : 26mn 13s - 204.88 ppd
Someone want to give me a quick lowdown on folding? What do I need to start folding?
:welcome:Quote:

1. Make two folders, one for each client and put one FAH504-console.exe file in each. Let's assume you have C:\FAH1 and C:\FAH2 for example for the two folders.
2. Start menu > Run > Type in "C:\FAH1\FAH504-console.exe" -configonly
include the quotes!
3. Here are the settings I use:
> User name: your name
> Team number: 36362
> Launch as a service: yes
> Ask before fetching/sending work: no
> Use IE settings: no
> Use proxy: no
> Allow 5MB or larger WU's: yes
> Change advanced options: yes
> Core priority: idle
> CPU usage requested: 100 (you can set this a little lower if the system sems to slow down much, but I've never noticed a slowdown)
> Disable highly optimized code: no
> Pause if on battery power: no (I don't run it on any laptops so this doesn't matter much)
> interval between checkpoints: 5 (default is 15, use whatever you prefer)
> Memory to indicate: full amount
> request WU's without deadlines: no
> set -advmethods always: yes
> ignore deadline info: no
> Machine ID: 1
3. Repeat for the second client in C:\FAH2 and use the same settings except have Machine ID set to 2.
4. After that, go to Start menu > run > regedit. Do a search for -svcstart, this will bring up the first client service command line. Edit that line, and after the -svcstart I add -local -advmethods -forceasm
the -local is very important for running multiple clients on one computer, it makes sure they don't get confused at all. the -advmethods just makes sure that it is turned on, -forceasm is good in case you have a system crash (like a power outage) it won't allow the client to disable SSE optimizations when restarting from the improper shutdown.
4. Continue the search for the -svcstart and on the second client command line in the registry add the same stuff.
5. Exit the registry editor.
6. Reboot and you should have 2 F@H clients running.
I use FahMon to monitor my clients.
Feel free to ask any questions :toast:
Welcome to the team pr33tz  and another UK folder for XS :)
I will have to get a pci video card tomorrow for the Opty rig, i put the P4 on last night untill i get Opty back up and running.:) I allways give pieces of equipment away and than i need one :p:
:welcome: :woot:
And tell me about it, I do the same thing :p: I gave away a whole bunch of 128MB PC100 sticks of RAM awhile ago, then found out later on I needed some :p:
I've followed the instructions and I seem to be folding (cpu usage 100%). However, FahMon doesn't seem to be monitoring. The message windows contains the following:
[12/12/06 - 14:54:30] Reloading pr33tz 1
[12/12/06 - 22:54:30] pr33tz 1 [ETA] | avg=N/A | last=N/A

Any ideas??
Click on FahMon (where file usually is) and hit Download New Projects. Also make sure that the path is correct.Quote:

You don't have to restart the WU when restarting or shutting down the computer, it saves checkpoints and will resume when the computer is rebooted.
Well, I'm up to 132nd place in 7 days and I haven't brought in the heavy guns yet :) I hope to clear at least 120th place by year end and 50th place by the middle of next year :)
sounds good IanY, keep it up

The signature thing seems to have a 1/2 day lag?
The stats should update once every couple of hours, but the times are a bit skewed because the server's based on the time in the US somewhere I think, eg. minus about 6hrs for us in the UK. Push for the front page mate, good luck :)
@IanY, take note of this link to see your 'conquests and overtakes'. Bookmark it ;) then check out the other pages for both your username and team XS.
You should be ranked 100 in 3 days!
Omg Omg !! :D Thanks for the link :)
Woo Hooo... :D
Just as a matter of interest, if the FAH client isn't set to start as a service, how do you start it manually? And likewise if it is set to start automatcially, how do you stop it temporarily?
For startup manually, just execute the Console exe file in your F@H directory.Quote:

Congratulations, pr33tz. You're rocking!
Thanx IanY, you're not far behind me though!! Last couple of days my production has been low due to changing rigs but I'm back up now and ready to roll!
Hi guys,
I am just wondering, do I have to do anything, or do I just start with a new username, and start Folding in the team? I presume I just start. Anyways, I plan to do some with my Mac now, and then do it 24/7 when I build my Core 2 Duo rig. :woot:
Hey lamboman
Just put in the username you want in the FAH client setup, team number is 36362, and start folding :) Once the first unit has finished, you should turn up in the stats pages - we tend to use EOC stats page Welcome to the team
Welcome to the fold, lamboman!
Do a name search on your desired Username first if you don't want any confusion.
