Is that testing feature built into atitool? Thats the same method I use with rivatuner, only it takes about 2 hours to find the max stable oc for the core and ram.
I just checked fedex, and my card was delivered to my house around noon, so I should have benches up of the core watercooled by tonight or tomorrow. Thank god I take fridays off work, lol :D

thing is that test is somewhat dopey but pff.. so i made it start at 200 and let it go upwards - running heatcylces that lasted longer with every 20 mhz increase or so. so it went up to 423 on the core and reported an error, then it slowly started going down until no errors were reported. when after another heatup-cycle there were no errors for some minutes, i cancelled it (i don't have all day... ;) ) and went to do the same with the memory, which took another 23-25mins (25 on the core as it got higher clocks then the memory).
that tool has an artifact tester included aswell, but that one is dopey, since my card would get no error for 0.02 (or so) seconds at default pro speeds (378/337.5) and with decreasing speeds (like downto 300/300) it wouldn't give a me a "no errors" for more than the above 0.02sec! starting from the bottom up i could get past 300/300 no fuss - so that tool must be a little stupid or sth :D. and my opinion on this last bit is further secured by the fact that neither aquamark nor 3d2k1+3 gave me artifacts at clockspeeds ABOVE default pro speeds! (strange, eh?)

Looking forward to seeing your watercooling results. Kind of makes me wish I would have held off on getting the 9800 pro 128 meg last week. On water I'm only artifact free at 424 on the core, but the hynix memory is a good clocker. Have it up to 390.60 in Rad Linker so far. Want to get some heatsinks for it before I push it more. The ram gets pretty hot when gaming or benching.
But anyhow, please do post your oc results on these relabelled XTs (very cool, and I'm happy for you guys) once you get at least some water on it. (I didn't think anybody around here used air for anything! ;) )
short update.. modded the ati-9800xt 25-hynix bios to default pro-core speeds, installed cat 4.2 instead of 3.9 (used before) and did some ati-tool testing. max speeds for both dropped :( but now i got temp-monitoring and running 412/365 game me a whooping a** 68°C (after about 3mins of running ati-artifact tester) on plain air with stock heatsink and all.. so that isn't really up to par. i guess i gotta get that chiller of mine up and running - and fast! :D
/update
installed cat 3.9 again - temps dropped from 68°C to 44°C full load (39°C idle). max core went up to 424, max stable core around the same as before the flash - hmm curious what will happen if i use the unmodded 9800xt hynix bios? ,)
also wondering what it is / ati did in the newer catalyst that temps are jumping by ~20°C. did they readjust the sensor to read high or stuff like that (hm too low sensor numbers rings a vapor bell hmmm :D )
im really waiting on someone to get some nice clocks with one of these, i mean my pro 500:400 is FAR faster than any of the clocks ive seen here so far
I jsut got my card in this morning, threw her in, was instantly recognized by Radlinker as an XT, runs perfectly at XT stock speeds. Right now I have it @ 440/375 with absolutely NO artifacts. Looped 3dm01 for 2 hours, just got home, still running flawlessly. Haven't flashed to XT bios yet. About to right now. Ill report back in a few minutes.
I came home from work today to find my card waiting for me at the door. :D So far all I've done is remove the stock heatsink and take some pictures, which I'll post later. The video card itself is in my freezer now, getting nice and cold so I can remove the shim. Going to install my new Fortron 530W PSU now, and hopefully the adjustable pots will have a nice effect on my memory OC. I'll post 3DMark links later tonight. :toast:

Flash successful. Before flash, 3dmark01 was 21k, after flash, with same clockrates, 3d mark went up 2k to 23,045. This is on an Athlon 64 3200 @ 2.4ghz with 2x512 BH-5 @ 200mhz 2-2-2-11 and 440/375 on the radeon.
Time to throw an athlon stock heatsink on this biatch and shoot for 500!
edit: yeah bro thats the bios I used. I have a question about ramsinks. Ive always bought those Tweakmonsters for a grip, what would you guys recommend for something a bit cheaper but just as effective? Any links would be greatly appreciated.

For ramsinks, I recommend cutting up an old heatsink you have laying around. You'll get longer fins, and will be a lot cheaper too. Plus you can custom fit them to sag over the edge of the chip a bit for better dissipation.
I have a question about the shim. Has anybody else tried removing theirs yet? I froze my card for about 2 hours and then tried to pry the shim off with a razor blade...the same way I got my 9700 Pro shim off. However, this one is being pretty stubborn and will hardly budge...

Have you bothered to check to see if the shim is actually higher than the core?
Butterknife and some kind of TIM or even just butter on the core may be enough to tell which is higher...
Please check to see if the core is higher with a lamp and straightedge. Rest the straightedge on edge on the core and hold the card up to a light. If you can see light between the straightedge and the shim when it's resting on the core your good....don't remove the thing as it won't help one bit and endangers your card.Quote:

All 9800 Pros I've seen make 110% solid core contact with a HSF.

2. Is the default vgpu 1.8v ala XT or was it put back to 1.7v ala Pro?

Have got 3dmark03 score run at 470/410 with some artifecting. But the real reason im quite happy is because of the cards default voltages. I took a look yesterday and the core is running at the default 1.7 volts (well actually a little bit less) and the mem is undervolted to 2.7volts (default is abt 2.9v) so I think their is alot of room for improvement with some voltage mods.
Oh sommet i forgot to say, be4 I flashed the bios the mem was crapping out at 365mhz not anymore ;)

k. so i measured my vgpu a mom ago.. defaults to 1.778v with the xt-bios. when running it at xt-clocks, the voltage went down to as low as 1.711 - quite some drop. is this a normal thing for these cards or should i grab some wires and mod it.
also.. with the xt-bios flashed, using cat 4.2 i got artifacts at default 9800pro speeds with that darn atitool - no probs whatsoever with cat 3.9. funny thing is my clocks seemed to be higher with the 9800 pro bios, duh. ;)
dunno.. atm i'm throwing around the idea of either return it and get another (based on the artifacts based on cat 4.2 at def.pro) or just grab some wires and vmod it :D.
tomorrow i've to braze some fittings to my radiator and do some wooden holddowns for the waterblocks (doh makeshift yet again).

However, the artifacting with CAT 4.2 is NOT a good thing. :(
I have cash right now and want to place the order for the card, but its a toss up between $320 for this or $220 for a Pro that may do the exact same thing (though with 128mb less).

I seem to be having a problem with my card.
I installed it tonight and everything was going smoothly. Watercooling was giving me temps of around 50C. The card also increased my idle temps by 2C over my 9700 Pro! I flashed to the XT BIOS with no problems and booted into windows after a CMOS flash, and began to start benching. At default XT BIOS speeds, about halfway through 3DMark2K1SE, my monitor went blank like it had lost the video signal.....grrr
To make a long and frustrating story short...using either the XT or stock BIOS and no matter what clock speeds I run (even tried underclocking :rolleyes: ) , my monitor always goes blank and acts like the system is turned off. I just don't know what to do, and am on the verge of RMAing this sucka.
What do you guys think?

neyoung, my 3dmark score has risen by two thousand points and Desert Combat is running flawlessly @ 1600x1200 2xAA 4xAS. I would definately do it again. Once the r420's ship, if the price drops down on these 9800 256 Sapphires, I might buy another one for my other system.

it was a nice 49f in my room and it might of been the 92mm fan directly infront of my hsf blowing onto the card ;)
i took off the shiny metal plate so the airflow would work better
the core idled @ 48c
but i did some some artifacts :(

'03.. hm 408 max i'd say when the system has run other tests previously. a cold boot after some 30mins of being of might work aswell. after a number of '01 loops i checked the temps again, 49°C going down to 39°C idle in like 4-5 mins (using cat 3.9).
brwmogazos, that's strange. you've seen the prices i posted some pages back? i'd think it's funny that you can't or only at a mucho high prices get these cards in the uk. rest of europe has them available for around 300 euros, while a 'real' xt is like 380-480 (if you chose to go for hercules). you might want to have a look across the channel.. geizhals.at/deutschland has a listing of these cards starting ~286 euros. and it's already on the front page :).

Well, I can't seem to fix this blank screen problem I keep getting while running 3D apps. I guess I'm just going to RMA since nobody else knows whats up either. What a shame, such a nice card...ran UT2K4 VERY smoothly for about 20 seconds. Then it would just take a dump and go to sleep.

i was using the cat 4.2s with my 9800pro and it was going crazy, couldnt OC worth SHIAT but i went back to cat3.9s and its MUCH better.

he.. i was a little p!ssed at mine yesterday. so today i thought "death or glory" http://www.abi02.de/deepblue2k2/smilies/devil2.gif and so i started the xt-vmod as shown here. as i didn't have a 20k pot, i used 2x 10ks in series. slapped it onto a little extra board, insulated it with hotglue, connected one end to ground on the powerplug, the other to resistor r1597 (with hotglue, what else? :D). as i wanted to see if it is/was working, i kept both pots at 10k - adding up to 20k and thus resulting in a very slight raise of vgpu from 1.78v to 1.80v (on startup, as later on it drops about 0.02v and stays there).
as bob pointed out that the heatsink is a pos, i wanted to remove its top plate, but no can do - darn tiny screws (screw em, lol). so i thought f... it and slapped a 120' delta afb in my rig blowing in the general direction of the gpu. i can't put it straight on as there's a dvb-s card 2 slots below the agp, a networkcontroller and my good ole soundbastard audigy below that.. well doesn't matter... at 12v the delta delivers enough power to cool the gpu down to 33°C idle and 39°C full load. combined with that very small raise in voltage i can now run ati-tool 424/385 for 20mins without error. max clocks (found by atitool) went up to 433/399.
where before this little mod artifacts were showing in '03, now it's as clean as can be at same clocks. so i'll up the clocks later on.
another thing worth noting is while before all of this the gpu voltage dropped from 1.778v (idle) to 1.711v fully loaded, it now only drops from 1.78v (idle) to 1.754v - so this basically helped stabilize the voltages.
on a sidenote.. i'm anticipating 2 fortrons 530w psu's to come home to daddy within a month or so. those will help keep all of my 2 systems voltages in line. atm (with this rig) voltages are like this: (min / max / avg)
+12v: 12.10 / 12.71 / 12.35
-12v: -13.51 / -12.68 / -13.08
+5v: 4.81 / 5.00 / 4.92
-5v: -5.54 / -5.14 / - 5.29
+3.3v: 3.18 / 3.31 / 3.25
pretty crappy, eh? ;)

all of it's hotglue glory. the brown cable is for measuring vgpu and leads to the header on my board. the board itself rests on 2x 0.5 cm high plastic standoffs that are countered on the other side of the card with another 2 standoffs, so i could easily use household m3 screws :D without shorting the card.
gogeta, which cats are you running, also if you've flashed to xt, what are the temps in the overdrive tab in cp? max i've seen was 68°C with cat 4.2 fully loaded. if you can, slap some bigas* fan in your rig, and aim it at the heatsink.
boyne, same thing happened here. not only did cat 4.2 oc like shiat for me, but it also gave me artifacts in '03 and aquamark at default 9800 pro clocks (with pro bios). what a pos. can't see how our uber-benchers make do with it ;). anyway i kept the 4.2 control panel and just reinstalled cat 3.9.. works like a charm. might try a modded 3.2 sometime soon.
didn't improve scores for all i know. but then again i don't remember what scores i got with 4.2 - didn't care for all i know as the artifacts p!ssed me off quite good.Quote:

and case temps.. hm.. my case is open - biggy chieftec 2000d room temp is at 18.3°C (64.8f) right now... was lower before... dunno low 17°C's or high 16°C's (~60f or so). back then i wasn't using an additional fan, and as said in my last post, 2 slots down from the agp is my dvb-s which puts out a good deal of heat... the delta takes care of that atm :D

My temps were pretty stable and weren't varying around 50C. I was using a Maze4 gpu connected to the same loop as my CPU block, with a BIX for a rad. CPU temps of around 45C load. I'm sure my problem wasn't caused by heat.
I'm just going to RMA this card. Its nice, but I already have a 9700 Pro that can do 400/700, so its not much of an upgrade. Although image quality did increase noticeably in 3DMark (not the IQ bench, just my eye). I plan on upgrading to an 875P platform soon, and will need the extra cash for that.
btw, I was using Omega 2.5.2.2 (Cat 4.2). But also tried using Cats 3.9 and got the same problem.

nah, don't think so. i just know - now - that mine and gogeta's cards have been downlabeled for a reason ;). mine has a problem with unstable voltages and his, who knows? if i don't find a solution to curing that, i'll rma it on monday and get another card :)Quote:

update:
threw some cheap ram sinks on it, can now run 430 on the ram without artifacts, brought my 3dmark01 score up to 23.9k!! just 100 off from 24k!
Mine will be in Monday or Tuesday. I'll be putting my Alpha Pal 6035 / both voltmods and ramsinks on it and flashing with the same BIOS Semper Fi did within 3 hours of removing the plastic wrap.Quote:

BTW, did you guys use a different BIOS than Semper Fi? Seems hes the only one with superb results so far.
I think we're all using the same bios, I clicked the link they posted.
Could be the cooling, I have a massive AMD hsf on the core and some chunky sinks on the ram with an 80mm tornado and a 120mm sunon mounted on the side panel.
So PowerColor USA is back to offering a 9800 SE w/ a 256-bit memory interface. After softmod (Omega Drivers) this would (if not changed otherwise) be the follower of the 9800 Non-Pro or a cheaper priced 9800 Pro (depending on the memory). The low-price of $154 is quite nice :)Quote:

Given the fact that it has a normal 9800 PCB, 256-bit memory interface and all, this would be without much to any risk. The only risk would be A) the memory (ns rating, company) and B) the fact that they didn't disable any other features (which is unlikely). And the slight (depending) risk that the disabled pipelines may be partially physically damaged.

you're right man, these things get DAMN hot. I have a stock AMD athlon xp HSF on mine and it gets so warm, almost hot to the touch.
Yeah I got this Aeroflow cleaned out and put back together, ready for the XT...it should cool pretty well considering it was meant for CPU's. I would be shooting for 500/400 without volt mods...we'll see.

Soul, if that thing is copper, those clocks should be no problem man. As long as you have ram sinks and decent airflow over the ram, 400 should be very do-able
my stock 9800np (stock cooler) does 440 core, is that good?
Yeah its a got a nice copper slug through the middle, its a very good CPU cooler for its low price.
The fan turns at 5700rpm and moves some decent air. The main thing about it is, there is no motor (magnet driven), so there is almost no "dead spot" in the middle and it can push air straight down the middle onto the copper slug that is contacting the core.

Hope you have better luck than me, last time that happened to me they said Express saver was a palletized shipment and they couldn't help me as the pallet would not be available until delivery day. Was dissapointed as by the time scheduled delivery made it around it was 5 days after the package actually made it locally. :rolleyes:

Yesterday I bought a Gigabyte 9800pro 256MB. Opened up the box and found out that the card has the new layout, like the one shown in the pics.
Gigabyte's site shows the card having the original 9800pro pcb with 16x16 mem, but mine was exactly the same like the Xt, same pcb same 8x32 mem.
Removing the hsf, made me a happier man: R360 core.
Of course there's no way to tell from the box which card it is, but there's a sticker on the back of the card saying it's a rev. 2.0.
I'm curious to see your gigabyte cards results.

Guys Im sorry but O dont have time to read this thread fully atm but can someone sum it up: Are these really 900Xt's and do they clock as high as the 9800Xt's ... lets say 500 w/ water?
Semper Fi has had the best results so far with really good air cooling. Some people have reported flaky core voltages on their cards. They ARE xt cores, but a volt mod might be needed to get the most out of them.
Looks like they might have been underperforming as XT's in a couple of cases, but for the most part they are acting like they are in fact underclocked XT's, soooo.....

I got my Sapphire 9800Pro256.....aka 9800XT.
I've got a serious problem...I try to flash my card and it says it's "locked" when I run ( flashrom -i 0 )
It doesn't look too good unless someone knows how to unlock the BIOS in these vid-cards...
I've flashed before as well...but have never encountered a "locked" BIOS in a card....
