man! Stop pushing charlie! He said he whant to see the limits w/ air, dry ice, LN2. And he is not even forced to do that, you can at least give him time!
BTW charlie: good OC, that chip looks killer
Im not pushing nobody, sorry if it seamed that way.. im just a bit exited.. i just asked him.. he said tonight and here in norway its night now, so i just wonderd in case there were some hours difference between our timezones..Quote:

4.7ghz charlie!!!!!! tonight!!
Good news Charlie, you have an amd64-bit compatible chip. Intel just confirmed the existence of Yamhill or CT technology at IDF. Prescott core has IA-32E architecture, E for extended edition. So, your 3.0e chip has 64-bit registers, but disabled. Man u lucked out.
I'm afraid I'm gonna' run out of motherboard this evening. I haven't started the HIPRO5 mods yet, and not sure if this IC7 can go much past 300 (4.5gHz)
C
Could booster wires to the vcore mosfets help?
Dam charlie i should just send you a grand in the mail for some mbs :D
charlie, take pics with the dry ice setup :D
charlie whats your rig for daily use/gaming

Everyday, I use P3/450...
Sometimes I use my 2.66/533 with an 845PE mobo, but that's goin away as a gift.
I need a real nice desktop, was thinking maybe Shuttle 875P/Prescott?? or maybe Shuttle A64/3200+
C
Keep up the good work. Cant wait for the story to continue.
T - minus 25 minutes, boys :D
C
waiting on the launchpad
screw the time, I'm stayin up to see this....
Charlie, it's about time.. hurry this up!!
With luck this means the prescott is just going higher and higher :p....
Yup,
picked up the right stuff....
if it's unreadable it says LLL or below abilities of this thermo, colder than -50C
:D
LLL... looks good Jedi, now crank that thang!
:slobber:
next time set up a webcam so we can all watch it live :D
:slobber:
Hurry up I'm getting excited :p:
lol, good thinking Saaya, that's what OPP, Macci, and every top oc'er should do!!
id even pay for it ^^
I'd pay for it to :p:
I should do that if I every try dry ice... But I'd end up getting a crap OC or killing everything and droping the F bomb about 500 times
would still be fun to watch :D
I've always liked even numbers, so.......
first run 15 x 300 = 4500mHz @ 1.63V
3:2 DDR400, 2-3-2-5 2.8V
Again this was a first run....no BSOD's no failed OC's...just "money"
Too bad Prescott's SUCK, eh guys?
C
holy sh**
benchies?...
WOW...
FWIW,
Anyone know what the WR is for highest speed EVER benched for 3D Mark 01???
C
well if you think of how people get 4ghz+ ocs on air with the latest nws 4.5 with dry ice isnt really amazing. it seems that heat is what keeps c1 prescotts from ocing nicely, if you can remove the heat they seem to clock nicely.
try lowering the vcore and see whats the lowest vcore you reach 4.5ghz with
FWIW,
The NB is burning DI faster than the CPU :D
C
If my completed PiFast runs say "computation error" does that mean it's CPU related or DDR related??
C
either or
EDIT
I'm not sure which is more likely, though..
4538 P4EE ES macci , i think he could run at higher clocks but he got worse scores because of async probs.
I overclocked my P4 2.0a to 2.4ghz with pc2100 ram , and came up with the same error in Pifast bench. cpu/ram was 1:1.Quote:

does Dry Ice achieve the same cooling effect as triple phase prom?
whats a tripple phase prom?
lol kanavit....
he probably meant triple phase cascade?
of course, but thats what makes it funny, lol.

yup,
motherboard (pre-HIPRO5) gave out at 307mHz. I could just "feel" that it's NOT the CPU. It did 307 at 1.64V, all the way to 1.72V, no change. SO the only way to go from here is with some HIPRO5 mods... will start tonight.
BTW, my temps were not THAT great....any of the r404/507 guys will match these results...
Will pull some benchies now.
C
how stable is that 4609.9MHz charlie? 3D'able?
Question.
how are you using clockgen?
from all I seen, clockgen will either freeze or reboot your PC upon trying to use it on a Prescott.
Kunaak,
My older copy of CG didn't work, so I d/l the latest and it's OK.
Still get some instability sometimes when opening...
and sometimes the results don't jive with CPU-Z

ocz bh6 memory should clock nicely with low volts.
is bh6>bh5 or both equal? I have 3.25v to give my ram, which would oc more with those volts?
edit: my god! 4.6GHz thats amazing :toast: put some dry ice on your 9800xt and go for the big 30k!
So any benches at at least 4.2Ghz? I don't expect much seeing you're running underclocked ram and such but i just wanna see if it scores higher than stock FX-51/9800XT (~21.9k).
They level off at the top if you ask me..
I've run 3DMark01....but only with a default R9700...
The numbers are certainly unimpressive :D
But if you insist....just wait a sec
no gonzo-XT benchies 'til the end of the week.
C
now we'll see how well the prescott scales compared to a nw, curious to see the results.
:confused:Quote:

no problem charlie, take your time. Somehow i don't expect to see a lot of 3D marks from that chip anyway.
would still have been interesting to see... i dont thtink anybody would have drawn conclusions from it anyways as its with with memory in async...
I'm mostly curious to see what the max stable core speed is for 3dmark with -50 or below cooling. Anyone wanna wager a guess? 4.4?
id say 4.5, probably more but the board is crapping out.
still working guys...
making runs at few speeds to compare...remember it's only 9700pro, 325/310 :D stock O/S, BIOS, low speed mem too!
very nice :D
can you bench it at 4ghz so we can compare it with a 3.2c@4ghz score?
4000
14 x 286 = 4000
3:2 DDR380
9700pro 325/310
19,259
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7571396
I almost beat that score ;)
4100
14 x 286 = 4100
3:2 DDR390
9700pro 325/310
19,353
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7571414
Strange....
tried benching at 5:4 and immediately goes black-screen when I push benchmark???
Isn't there something in IC7 BIOS for running 5:4??? SOme kind of setting that must be changed?? And NO I don't mean "5:4", lol.
C
do you have a 3.2c you can run at the same speed to compare them?
we could finally see how the prescott scales at high clockspeeds compared to the nw, thats what everybody is talking about but noone knows how it will scale actually.
EDIT: you mean some memory timing stuff?
I think a 1M L2 Northwood would be way faster than a Prescott in the lobby test...
Well that's it for the DI.
I guess time for a post-mortem here.
1) Note: Vcore Caps/Mosfets get REALLLLL hot.
2) Must find out why NO 5:4 benching :(
3) Time for HIPRO5 mods
4) Note: A64 is easier/faster
5) Max benchable 3D with my current DI setup, 4413 through Car Low
Note to self: Get hands on Cascade system!
I abso-freekin lutely guarantee that with a mobo that'll do 333, this chip can do 5gHz on a Cascade... I was ALMOST able to run CPU-Z or a Sandra at 4655mHz when my temp in BIOS was -17C
Reminder to self: FIND PHASE CHANGE SYSTEM!!!!
charlie, great stuff!
As for the 5:4, the IC7 boards dont boot at 5:4 if the memory settings are at "By Spd". Change them to 3,8,4,4 and see if it works.
Good luck! :)
Charlie, nice work so far. :toast:Quote:

Yes, those mosfet get really really hot. I have the MAX3 and PWM gets up to like 60C, I can smell the OTES rubber melt a little. You better put some serious cooling on them.
Cool the mosfets perhaps, maybe add a booster and/or load balancing wire?
thank you VERY much for this live review! :D
great stuff charlie! i wonder whether OPP is already slapping his cascade on a prescott, if you live near him ask him if you can use his cascade (think you need to get your stuff there though, from what i saw and heard that thing is anything from transportable, unless you load it on a pick up truck :D)
no praise to the presscot, nor tips for the mobo
lol ,cool the pwn ic! :D
maybe we'll need to phase-change cool the mosfets too ;)
Very very very nice results dude. Makes me wanna dry ice comp for some nice cooling action.
I reckon water chiller the mofsets :)
Nice work Charlie, shame you did not get a 17 multiplier.
Regards
Andy
GAH!
I just knew I should have stayed up later than 1am crawling the boards.
Damn fine work there charlie, just let me know if you plan on playing tonight, I don't have to work tomorrow.:D
lol
-o-hey dude lets go watch that new samurai movie
-[]-yeah, will be fun!
-x-nah dudes i cant, charlie is dipping his prescott into ln2 again tonight.
-o-who's charlie?
-[]-who's scott?
:ROTF:
LOL saaya, very niiicee.
Well Charlie, very nice results! Thanks for putting in the effort and showing us all.
nice going charlie :)
keep up the good "hot" work :)
Wether it's brave, or st00pid, what your doing rocks man, you deserve a big pat on the back dude. :D
:toast:
That there is reason # 1 to get BH5 ... The IC7 series absolutly sucks at 5:4 with most ram... BH5 works sweet though.Quote:

Thanks guys...
Another note: Even the day after benching, the darn AS5 turns into AS EPOXY.... ripped my Prescott out of the socket! Fortunately it just popped out, no damaged pins and the hs/f didn't come off. WIll go back to Ceramique...
C
Good luck, Charlie.Quote:

Be carefull with the céramique though, it does the same as AS5. At least, it does with me each time. Pulls the cpu right out off the socket, each time I remove my HS.
 Nice numbers there Charlie :toast:
Where/how'd you make those containers? Still need one for NB/GPU ;)
ctgilles,
They're REAL simple, just copper tube with a cap brazed on, and filled with 2cm of copper "shot" mixed with epoxy.
C

Where'd you get the hold down? Hardware store?
It's aluminum U - shaped material. Yes, from the HW store, and cheap.
C
So any ideas about the 5:4 issue?? It boots into Windows fine, runs Sandra's, etc. But open 3Dmark and push "Benchmark" and insta- BLACKSCREEN
You think it's worth it to mod the IC7 or should I just grab a P4C800-E???????
C
For 3D, the P4C/P4P are remarkably betterQuote:

Man nice clocks. Wish i could get my hands on same l2n.
Very nice results charlie! Good that we can achieve the same results with modded mk1/2's and cc's coolers.
Too bad you didnt have a r9800 xt...atleast a r9800 pro. Would love to see the 3dmark score. The results were not impressive at all (with 3d) I remember my 9700pro and 2.4c@3.4ghz would do 15k easy.
Get some more dry ice or modded prom :D
My 2.4C@3.2 and stock 9700 pro does 17k+
I remember my fx-51 on air broke 20K with the SAME default 9700Pro...
C
does anyone know WHERE online i can buy caps and resistors and such???? I'm gonna try the HIPRO mod on the IC7 and maybe try a P4C800 later (although it has bad rep for 5:4 too)
C
Nice work Charlie!:toast:
I am a little dissapointed with it's performance though.
Between this thread and the other threads posted, what would convince one to purchase this processor.
I was thinking of getting one but the performance is far worse than predicted.
Tritium,
Yeah, I know...
Think of it as just a different stepping on a Northwood... cheap, too.
all,
BTW, i just mangled my GEIL heatspreaders to get them off...hope the sticks are oK...maybe it'd be easier to heat them up first in the oven to make the sticky stuff softer?????
Remarked of course... at least there aren't any belt-sander marks ala ***

Is that PC3700 Ultra Platinum you say? I have some dirt cheap GeIL Value PC3200 with the same chips :D looks like the same PCB too.
Exact same code exept the week, mine are 0318.
Not great OC'ers, but they do 220 2-3-2 and 230 2,5-3-3 stable with ~3,07-.09v (highest I've tested them so far).
And they do 2-2-2? Interresting. Do they need high voltage to do it?
Or could it be different chips with the same marking?
Good Point!Quote:

only about 220 at 2-2-2-5
all at 2.8V
I heard that infineon with -5A is remarked bh-6. Not sure if it applies to geil.
