ABIT IC7 – IC7-G – IC7 MAX3 ALL in one Modifications - The way to go!

Okay, here's my inexperience coming inot play here.

With VTT mod, I heard that macci left the MC50 in place & did the mod the same cept that the MC50 was still there.

first dilemma:
About cutting the trace at the back of the mobo, do I need to cut along the lines or is it as long as I snip the trace it's okay?

I seen some pics where the trace was basically cut nearly the full length of the trace. I'm thinking about just cutting straight across the trace instead of cutting along the trace?

I borrowed hipro5's pic & edited it to show the place/s where I'd be cutting the trace in blue, (I hope he doesn't mind, if hipro does not like it, I can erase the pic). I'm thinking that it'd do thae same job.

Double post but important to me none-the-less:

second dilemma:
With the Vdimm mod for the max3, can I do it by just taking soldering a 2K VR from the bottom pad of the MC64 & the bottom leg of the Winbond chip above the R50/MC64? Just like how I did it to the IC7-G?

What about soldering a 10Ohm fixed resistor plus 1K VR set to something between 100-220Ohms like the drawing of johnrr66 that I've modified to to show what my theory is about the Max3 Vmem mod?

Will this work?

I hope to get an answer within the next 24hors as Im taking the mobo, 9800XT & my new Enermax 460w PSU to my m8 to get modded somethime 2morrow.

Out of curiousity, I measured the Vdd (Vchip) on my IC7-G with a Prescott installed, and it measured 1.28V.... I noted you said it was 1.49 in your notes. Is it possible that with a Prescott, it uses a lower VDD (Vchip)????

I am in the middle of doing the mod the Catch22 way but a worried as there isn't much feedback on whether Catch22's way works good or not.

I have taken the MC50 capacitor off & am worried that if Catch22's way doesn't work then I'm kinda stuck with another dead IC7-G board.

What I wanted to ask is if some kind soul could somehow measure or find out what the capacitance of that MC50 cap is. I would've done it with my dead IC7-G but silly me used that board as a practice board to take the MC50 off b y using the old fashioned way, with a plier....

I have this thought that most mobos use 10nf capacitors but would like someone with more experience than me (that's probably 90% of the XS members) to clarify this.

I had the same problem BUT with my GeForce 440MX overvolted........When I didn't overvolted my VGA,everything was OK.......I do not know about Proscott yet......

Done the Vmem mod with my "modified" hipro5 way on my IC7-G, also did the VTT mod the Catch22 way as described in my last few posts....

They're working perfectly!!!!

Next on my list, My Max3 mod, doing it the way in hipro5's guide. Not going too extreme, just the Vmem, VTT & that cap on the N/B.

Look out!!!! I learnt how to solder 2day as well!!!hahahahahaha!!!

No mobo, vid card, PSU is safe from me NOW!!:D :D :D :D :D

Mod works so good that I've able to get 2 x 512MB XMS3500 running at DDR496 (trying DDR500 right now). So far, DDR496 @ 3.3v/1.7VTT 2-5-2-2. not bad for 512Mb sticks in dual channel.

Question..... VAGP feeds VDD for the chipset? From reading around here and your webpage that's the conclusion I came up with. I have done Vdimm, and vtt mods to my max3, not sure about doing the vagp just yet but if vagp is left unmodded the max vdd for the chipset will be the 1.65 selectable through bios right? If so I can raise the vdd to 1.65 before needing the vagp mod?

Trying to get over a hurdle and hopefully this mod will do it.

yup. but the vagp also helps the chipset even if the chipset voltage isnt raised beasue thats the voltage that coes to it thought the agp bus

WOOHOO!!!

Now at DDR500 @ 3.4vdimm/1.7vtt @ 2-5-2-2 with my 2 x 256MB XMS3500 thanks to the Vmem mod (hipro5) & VTT Mod (Catch22 way).

Done 100 Memtest86+ runs of test 5 & 6, 50 runs of test 3, plus over 7 hours of all tests without a fault rearing it's ugly head!!

Got me new 3.0Ghz NW testing now at 280fsb (4.2Ghz:banana: :banana: ), hoping that she'll do fine.

Hipro please post the mod for puting 5v on the mosfets directly. thanks

I've been able to set GAT @ turbo, enhanced, 5 Clocks, enabled, enabled & pass a few hours of Memtest86+ with these 2 "babies o' mine".

Got some 512MB sticks that'll do 240fsb 1/1 forever but as soon as I enabled CPC, it just dies.... I'm thinking it has something to do with being 512MB sticks... GAT @ auto, aggressive, 5 Clocks enabled, disabled.
Bandwidth reported by Memtest86+ is something like 3207MB/S...
Have yet to try Sandra unbuffered on them.

hipro, does your Ram give up on your when running 5/4 dividers?? I mean, do they get as high as they do 1/1 or do they give up earlier on 5/4??

My 2x512MB stick XMS3500 dies when dividers are used. Even 220 with GAT @ a, a, a, d, d they just throw up errors & then freeze my rig...

Haven't fully tested all my BH5 sticks - 6 x 256MB, 2 x 512MB - so hopefully I'll end up with some that'll do more than 250 1/1.
Sure beats the h3ll out of running my new 3.0Ghz with A-Data DDR500 @ 544 (2.5-5-4-4)...

Hipro you're my freakin hero man! AMAZING mods!

OK. The temp on my regulated solder pencil accidently got bumped up (read without my knowledge) on my max 3. The traces burned on R50 on the max3 board, R46 seems damaged. Only the top layer is damaged. Can I salvage this board? Is there a way to make some direct connections, thereby bypassing the traces, or can I pick up the traces at another location?

What about plain old vcore mod?
We've tried to mod my vanilla IC7 but with no luck.
at ~1.9V board will hang.
tried to mod both vsen and vdiff legs - voltage was lowered
at these legs but still a no go.

is it ok to use a 2200 uf / 6.3v Electrolyte capacitor for vnorthbridge stabilisation?

IF I'm not too late, try to solder one end of the resistor(not SMD) one the right leg of the Mos-Fet and it's other end onto capasitor(brown one) below R50.......... ;)

If you meen 3.6Vmem(Vdimm) , you have to mod your PSU so as to give 3.8Volts on 3.3V line so as to stabilize your 3.6Vmem....... ;)

No I haven't tried all four banks cos my Rams are full of heatsinks and there is no room for four of them left.....

No it's not cos the R50 is 0 Ohms......You have to solder a 10 Ohms one........As for the capasitor,it's OK....... ;)

k, another question for you...
Malves from this forum also made a mod guide for the ic7. and he does not use a 10 ohms one to replace the r50 0 ohms one, he solders a 200 ohm vr right to the two pads if I am not wrong. Is this correct, or is it correct to do it your way :P?

If you only use the vr without the 10 Ohm resistor, your voltage is fluctuating above 3v. With Hipro's mod you get a strong voltage at all, this is my own experience

If you ground the trimmer, like I did, you'll have stable vdimm. I had my vdimm up to 3.5v and it was stable.

Never tried this, maybe it works fine too :)

It seems that my max3 doesn't want to go higher than 270 fsb
when i set 271 in clockgen and run prime i get instant error and 270 fsb i can run prime all the time.

i don't think its the cpu that is limiting me because it's a 3.0c SL6WU (i can run 3.6ghz @ 1.55v with stock cooling) and known for very good overclocks.

I can run 270 @ 1.675v and if i change to 271 and up to voltage to even 1.85v it doesn't work.

i'm using mach2 and have already done the vtt mod.
mem (mushkin pc3500) is running @ 3.0v 5:4.
I tried 3.2v and doesnt help either so i don't think it's the memory cause i can do memtest+ on 270 1.675v and mem at 3.0v without an error.

also agp/pci is set to 75/38.

I have a question here. I just completed the cap on the nbridge, the 15kohm resistor for northy, vdd and vtt for my 1c7

now when I boot up is the vtt supposed to remain stock? I tried to raise the resistance of just the vtt but the voltage did not change from 1.29~1.3 (used mlti and hardware mon) have i not properly cut the trace or somethign? feed back would be greatly appreciated. -John

EDIT: also a note. when Iwas doing the mod, the brown mini cap on mc50 broke off. I currently have the wire for the vr on the pad closest to the winbound chip. would this have anything to do with the vtt not changing?

EDIT yet again.. so it works.. the thing may have been working all this time. it semes that the vtt does not change till around 100+ on the vr. not a gradual change but a sudden one. the hardware moniter sais nothing. one final note... those damn vr's get mighty damn hot... I'm thinking I should sink them...

Since no one else is helping you.... VDD is supposed to be a 50K vr. set at max resistance and lowered for more VDD.

I do vtt mod the catch22 way.

1K vr, set resistance to one of the outer legs to 200ohms. Take left pad (closest to windbond chip) to middle leg of VR. Take the leg you set to 200ohms to upper mosfet, lower leg. (this mosfet is up near the aux fan header) than take right pad of mc50 to the last leg of VR. do the trace cut, and you should be fine. Windows and bios will not reflect VTT value changes, you must measure it with dmm to know true value.

Trace probably wasn't fully cut. check resistance between left side of MC50 and right side of MC39.

0. Set the Bios VDimm to 2,55.

1. I have to unsolder the SMD Resistor near R50 and replace it with a 10 Ohms SMD or regular restistor.
It can contact the resistor next to it, but it's no must. Right?
2. I have a trimmer of 200 Ohms like this: http://www.reichelt.de/bilder/web/B400/76_40.jpg (middle leg is ground?)
3. I have to solder the ground-leg of the trimmer to right point of MC147 near the 12V ATX "Slot".
4. I solder one leg of the trimmer to the left side of my 10Ohms resistor.

Somewhere i read, that it should be set to 0 Ohms, but between what? Between the ground and the replaced resistor?

With which settings do i get the maximum Vdimm (max of 3,3 Rail?) 0 Ohms?

EDIT:
I soldered the dimm mod on asus p4p800 and it worked, i think it's harder on the abit...

Set the trimmer to full clockwise = 0 ohms, then check resistance between MC50 and MC39. If it reads 0 ohms, then you are one step to know if it's right.
Give the trimmer a few turns counterclockwise (raising resistance) and check resistance between MC50 and MC39 again, it should read anything other than 0 ohms. If it's not, then the trace is not cut.

BTW, just realized now that you have a fixed resistor there. So when the trimmer is set at 0ohms, the MM should read the value (ohms) of that fixed resistor...which I suppose is 10 ohms.:)

You have t trimm it at maximum value(200Ohms) and then start playing around........IF you trimm it at 0Ohms and leave it there , your mobo will NOT boot at all.........

ok i checked resistance. as u mentioned it shows 10 ohms. so i guess tracecut works, which is nothing new to me, cause i checked with mm if connection is cut or not during trace cutting. well my problem is now that the ohms dont change if i turn the vr. well no go tried soldering again and with different ground point (screw hole) but no go? any ideas? used a 200ohms vr for this one

You'll measure the Ohms at the point you soldered the cable to ground and not in parallel with the 10Ohms resistor.....You'll measure it at the higher point of the MC50 capasitor to ground.....

Now you don't have to mod your PSU's 3.3Volts rail ..........ONLY with one unsolder and one solder........I'm waiting for a friends of mine digicam so as to upload the pictures.........You can feed your Rams up to 4.9Volts...... :D :wave:

Does this VTT mod sound ok, to you?

1. Cut trace from back of the board
2. Leave MC50 cap in its place, and solder wire from center leg of vr to its upper side (closer to Winbond chip).
3. Solder wire from vr to VTT mosfet lower (source) leg.
4. Solder last free leg of vr to ground.

Resistance (of vr) between MC50 and VTT mosfet should be first 0ohms, right?

Yes it's OK......BUT you have to solder the wire of the Mos-Fet on the Drain of the one and Source of the other(closer to rams) where we measure the VTT......

Can you clear it little bit?

So one wire goes to MC50 side, one to mosfet (Q6) leg, where the VTT is measured, and the last one to?

If you don't solder a resistor(as you say) then it's going to ground......

VTT, VDDR and Vchip mods work like charm.

hipro, ive done all 5 of your mods. 4 work like a charm xcept the vtt mod.(i did the second vtt mod cutting trace on back of board/with vr pot) i found that it just burns up any pot used(cause it needs almost a dead short to work). the only way i can get it to track1/2 vtt is to use a .25 ohm 3watt resistor to grd instead of the vr pot.. can u help??? thnx


update well, seems i burned up or severly weakened the power mosfets to the vtt . funny right after i posted this ,the rig just shut
down and on inspection the far right hand power vtt mosfet was burned. tho the rigg runs i can only get 1 volt thru to feed my vtt.Well daddy hipro, any suggestions??? or am i sunk.... thnx flapper

You might have soldered the trimmer to the Mos-Fet's side.......Check if you soldered them to the M64 side.......(of the 10 Ohms resistor).....

hipro, to do the 5v mem mod which leg of the mosfets do i need to lift up and do i need to lift up both mosfet legs?

No......You have to lift up the leg of this Mos-Fet of the photo......The one which I've soldered the "fat" cable on.......Unsolder it with MUCH care not to break the Mos-Fet's case and feed it with 5Volts........ ;)


EDIT......After that you have to put heatsinks on the two output Ram's Mos-Fets(The big ones).....

thankyou hipro i will try.. im pretty good at this cause i work in hi -tech(tho u are my master). i followed this mod EXACTLTY what do u think happened?? im at a loss.... without prints i find it difficult to trak what went wrong....
