I was thinking and it came to me that with each generation Intel takes more and more of the ability to overclock away from us.
Guys got their i7-920's to do the speeds of the 975's so what do we see next? SB chips with locked down BCLK's on the first P67 boards
Manufacturers got around this and now the boot at 100 is on the chip.
Now overclocking is probably what? Somewhere between 1-3% of their overall business BUT those overclockers spend way above the average of the normal user but we're still looked at like the red headed stepchild.
Oh yes, they toss us a bone here and there with the K or X unlocked multi desktop cpu's just to keep us quiet but at the same time do their damnest to
keep us "in our place"
There is no reason in hell that when someone spends $3800.00 for TWO damned cpu's that they should be disabled in any way shape or form.

1x Quadro 5000
2x EVGA GeForce 580 3GB Classified Hydro
2x swiftech pumps
4-5 7200RPM Drives
Was previously planning to run a Corsair AX1200 as the mains power supply, CPU, case items, board, etc, and then a secondary AX850 to push the PCI-E cable power to the cards.
Therefore my options are:
1) Run everything off the AX1200, freeing up space for 2 instead of 1 480 rad.
2) Run both PSU's as planned and try to run both 580's and both CPU on one 480 rad.
3) Get the top extension for MH10 so I can run a 480 rad on the board side as well <--would try to avoid since it adds height
Can an AX1200 handle that system reasonably? I don't want to run the PSU balls-out all the time either. Rig will not be used for gaming, only rendering and some GPU calculations.
I would use the 850 PSU for the board,chips and HD and the 1200 for the vid cards..JMHO..Quote:

They are not going to give us Xeons with unlocked multis or BCLKing like on SR-2. The market for those chips is completly different than what we use them for, except a few people like you and I.
Even if they did there is simply to few motherboards that could even do it... like 2, maybe 3 if you count Giga's board but those never come up for sale over here.
You know about the governor circuit that prevents any OC's anyway so again we are only looking at 2 boards. No others have BIOS support for OCing so again 2 boards only.
I am desperate to get dual cpu boards that OC and also have IMPI and that is not going to happen.
ASUS has two boards, one that can OC but limited RAM slots and no IMPI. The other has much greater RAM slots ability plus a bunch of server stuff but cannot OC so you can see where that is going.

Cores and heat generated is what decided what was available and thats the case here.
Also there are no 8 core desktop chips and my guess and say guess is that when you go from 6 core to 8 Intel ran into big heat problems.
Last, there hasn't ever been a Registered ECC memory stick that would OC more than a tiny amount.
You can buy DDR3-1600 ECC memory but not Registered and even that is tough to find and very limited in who makes it.
Back to cpu's, It's all cores and heat my friend and Intel has been telling us for years not in statements but by what they offer what they consider to be acceptable.
The problem is that we don't build cookie-cutter systems with weak cooling and because of that we disagree with their thinking.
I'm also wondering if there would be issues with the boards themselves providing the voltage needed to power these at 4250-4500MHz but thats a small consideration and moot point as long as the chips are locked tighter than " a Cow's arse at fly time!":D

Yeah those 4.4ghz westmeres clocked by Intel looked like stock settings when they dropped them in so the governor circuit would think all is good.
I think your right about the power circuits on server motherboards and being able to handle what OC's we would like to see.

Some crap phone pictures. Need to clean up the cables but everything is working. Also this system was kind of cobbled together from parts I already had - besides the cpu/board of course.
One note - this new swiftech dual pump is nuts. I've never seen a loop get the air out so fast. It's so powerful in this small loop that when i turned it on it just blasted water through so fast giant violent air bubbles came flying through the loop into the res, making huge gurgling sound for about 10 seconds, then dead quiet. Actually laughed out loud it it. It's running about 2 gpm right now so I plan to dial it back to make even quieter.

Asus tech support has been unable to give me any pointers. They just tell me to look at page 4-35 of the manual, which looks different from what I have.. :)
Anyone else see this? It's a real show stopper for me as I need to set at least one of the slots back so a picky set of cards I have will even show up.
Also, any find any memory they can reliably OC. I've gone thru pretty much have the QVL in tests as the best I can do and reliably boot either Win7 or Fedora 16 is 1866 on the GeIL Corsa memory listed. I can push that to 2133 in the BIOS and it still posts (doesn't at 2400), but Win7 and Fedora both behave .. very badly. I've tried a lot of memory off the QVL as well and the best I've gotten so far is 1600 reliably and sometimes 1866. Some g.Skill Ripjaws 2400 just showed up yesterday and I'll try those shortly.

my problem is cpu's are not stable on default voltage.. linx or prime got errors 4-5 minutes after run..if i give extra voltage like 1.25V something like that stability is established .. but vdroop is too much.. at bios cpu voltage 1.25v ,, voltage on cpu at 3.3ghz drops 1.16 - 1.21..
i have another issue.. on manual there options for cpu boot voltage / cpu vtt voltage or pci-e gen1/gen2/gen3 settings.. they are hidden in my bios options.. i tried 0311 and 0405 bioses but all are same..

I have the same problem using bios 0311 and 0405. I can't get my 28nm ATI cards to post in the system and it needs a fix just like whatever was done in the sabertooth x79 1104 bios to get the 28nm AMD 7xxx to work.Quote:
