the bad, at different voltage levels qpi/vtt should be off even more if you increase it
Wow this thread went all silent!
No intention for me to go beyond 1.4V on the qpi/vtt at this point. Funny it is much closer to target on my board than most have reported. I also got my Antec Kuhler H20 LED to match the orange LED on the board... Pretty cool.
I haven't any time to play with mine. Summers are short here so need to make the most of them.
yea summer, the days are long buttime is short!
qpi/vtt is different depending on the BIOS used, F5B is much better than previous BIOSes.
Hi guys ...I was able to borrow a 980x and was able to get one x58a-oc ...when i press the 4g button...what happens is the system will reboot but what is hapennig is it will be a 25 x 200 multi with just 1.31+v core set on the bios so the system will not boot...when it failed to boot and you go to the bios that is what you will see a 25 x 200 ... I cannot make the 4g button work :( is this a processor issue since the 980x i borrowed is one ES proc?
Seems like i need to rename the 4g button to 5g hahaha :D
Did you load optimized defaults save and reboot on first boot after installing cpu?
yeah i did that ... will try to get non ES cpu ... i think this has something to do with my ES processor
Anyone have tips on running greater than 2133Mhz ram frequency on this board with a 980x? Of course with some capable ram.
It depends more on the CPU and the memory than the board. I have not been too succesful beyond 2000MHz but I am on a AIO WC so I am limited in terms of voltage.
Though I strictly play air, what BIOS is best?
Main goal : Getting up and over UD7/Rex3 and Classy settings
W3680 3005-F-553 @4.2 -1,25V
Uncore stable up to 4.01 thus far
6x4Gb @1900+ 8-9-8 1T
just use the latest, they just get better, but there aren't that many BIOSes anyways. OCing really doesn't change much across BIOSes, but the qpivtt doesn't overvolt with the latest BIOS.
As for memory clocking, anyone tested with 6x 4G`s?
Main goal would be @2000 with tight timings. 8-9-8 or better for PSC.
9-10-9 for Hynix, and if possible 9-9-8 for Micron
It will depend more on your CPU IMC than on the board. The only 4GB sticks that have a chance to reaching 2000MHz at any timing right now are Hynix. PSC are only 2GB sticks and unless there is something new from Micron, they are stuck at 1600ish max. With 6x4GB I am able to get to 2002MHz 9-11-9-27 but I am anal about running the uncore at 2x the RAM clock. Downclocking the uncore means downclocking the IMC which means loss in memory bandwidth so any RAM overclock is kind of moot.
IMC isn`t to bad, hence the X58A-OC.
PSC/Elpida/??? Geil 2000 Ultra+ (Same chip as the Tridents, http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&daysprune=365 )
Microns are Corsair 6*4 1600 and hopefully do 1900 9-9-8 (1823 9-9-9 stuck on Rex3)
I have been trying 3x2GB OCZ Blades (Hypers) at 2160Mhz configured at c7. No luck on that speed so far on bios F5b and F4c. It works beautifully on the R3E with the same proc I am testing. I am still trying though.
I am done with X58A-OC
I tried it 5 times on LN2 and repeatedly it froze to death after 10 - 30 minutes, I tried all possible isolations like armaflex, eraser etc. I can bench for hours on R3E, R3 BE and UD9 but not with X58A-OC... this time it's not my fault, buttons are bugged, layout is not for overclockers, clearmos buttons and pwm clock under CPU isolation? It's not for me and this motherboard needs sometimes good clearmos, it has some problems with boot on cold... I set 600 pwm clock and after 10 minutes it killed my retail 990x on stock during Windows 7 installation... OC motherboard and there are no options like in GOOC bioses for normal motherboards, thats a joke in my opinion
results:
my 7 GHz chip on R3 BE did 6.8 GHz with pain in the asshttp://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1877094...
3D tests were about 100 - 150 MHz worse than on R3 BE
The only one positive aspect is price, in Poland it's cheaper than UD7 (it's about 360$ and tax in Poland is 23%) and have 4 PCIE for dual cards (AMD) but for me it's not enough. Maybe my sample was broken, but for me this motherboard isn't good, best GB motherboard was and will be UD9 which is amazing mobo
damn that sucks man, you must be doing something wrong or have gotten a bad board, b/c that is crazy.
miravo doing something wrong? you must be kidding me
Then it must be a bad board or somthing,
BTW ppl aren't perfect they make mistakes, of course not 5 times in a row lol.
I have seen him OC he is very good, i am just saying. His problems are just very odd.
A Gigabyte board that actually overvolts VTT a bit rather than undervolting by 0.05v or more (*cough*UD9*cough*)? That's something!
my max clocks in 3D are same with OC and UD9, OC sets volts differently which throws some people off a bit, especially after switching from UD9 to OC and in particular the VTT difference between the boards. That alone can have major difference in OC
ive not had a single bench session on OC board last less then at least 3 hours with some as long as 10 hours. What freezing are you referring to exactly?
@Dino: any memory clocking data for this board? I am having some trouble getting stable runs on c7 @ 2160Mhz. The RAM (OCZ Blades) and processor (980x) are capable on doing this on the UD9 and R3E. I dunno what's the big difference for the X58A-OC board. Thanks in advance...
F5b bios, btw....
@sin: yup, the vdimm was 0.02 less in the DMM from what is set in the bios. DMM reading is at 1.78vdimm and I have it at 1.80v in the bios.Quote:
I was that F5B isn't overvolting as much as the previous BIOSes, are you by chance compensating for the overvolt or reading by DMM?
last time i seriously benched ram clocked alright
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...fun&highlight=
@dino: thanks for that. Let me try that bios. I have tried F5b and F4c.
My board suddenly became very unstable. I can't even boot into windows with settings which were prime/LinX stable. Clear CMOS is next... Never had this many problems with the eVGA Classified board...
Hey guys!
For all the subscribers - Check out my Bclk update on the OC board - 268+ Bclk!!  :yepp:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...apon-Of-Choice!
Just smashed the world record for 1366 Bclk!!
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...=1#post4900521
here's a sneak peak (IE Not my highest)! Also made a video booting at 260 and then going up to 275 in windows :)

I'll make a WR thread tomorrow with my highest result, going for 3Ghz memory action tonight on X58 :D
:bows: Amazing!
Congrats.
Thanks man, this board has been so much fun!!
Bclk World Record secured!

Finally came to it, to rebuild my test/game-rig.
Replaced my Rex3 with the OC.:D
F****ckd up almost a whole weekend testing and figuring out how the damned thing works. :shakes:
Regardles any manual setting in the bios, it keeps crashing going over 3,7Ghz, or above 1630 7-8-7-24 using 24Gb`s.:upset:
Using the 4 Ghz button, made it boot, @ 25x160. From there went up to 167FSB, with manual set timings, and it`s al LiX stable. :bananal:
Now figuring out to get 23x180+ 7-8-7-24:dammit:
take the cooler off and clean your CPU pads and dont tighten too much when you remount
after clearing defaults only change bclock, multi and volts, say 200x20 and then start tweaking from there and see what is causing the low bclock as it obviously isnt normal
Hi Dino,
Current setup:
W3680 3005-F-553 @4.2 -1,25V
X58A-OC
Geil Ultra+ 6x4GB 7-8-7-24
NH-D14 Triple fan
POV 480 Sli
Will give it another go tonight, and reseat everything.
Compared to UD7-r1, the voltages set by default are much higher, using the 4Ghz button. DMM difference is almost 0,05V(1,254V-UD7 / 1,321-OC)
that should be 0.050v not 500mv
:D
Reseated the whole shabam, :( , still a 25x160 on the 4Ghz button. (Print of the paste on the cooler and core near perfect)
Memory reseated, etc. Let the paste cure for 2 hours, and started to work the other way around.
12 BSOD`s and a lot of cursing later, succes. :bananal:
Voltages are way above previous needed settings, but starting to get somewhere.
Temps are 4-8 degrees up, but still within my limits.
During the short tests, using LinX for a couple of rounds, there is still improvement possible as Gflops are still going up, with every few mHz up.
Well, actually trying to push 24Gb of ram. :D
Know it is crazy, but heck, if it fits, why not push it to it`s limits.
It runs stable @ 1866 7-8-7 , 2000 8-9-8, 2100 9-9-9.
Big problem is, getting highest core icm max mem at desent timings.
Will continue..........
Started all over again.
Nice one, and 81Gflop`s Linx.
Voltage`s within reason.
After some testing using F3 and F4 biosses, back to F5b.
Cleared cmos a few times, reflashed, loaded defaults, reboot, manual settings, etc.
Firts run @ decent voltages:
CPU PLL - 1,6000
QPI/VTT - 1,435
Core - 1,3625
LLC - Auto
Dram - 1,64
IOH PLL - 1,22
Rest on auto
yea it seems F5B is the best
24gb :D
 1600+ on 24 Gb keeps demanding 1,51V on Qpi/Vtt, and results in coretemps of +75C.
(1,35V on Rex3 for 1800 7-8-7, 1,4V on Classie for 1780 7-8-7, 1,325 on UD7r1 for 1800 7-8-7)
The only one capable running 6-6-5-21-72 @1370, 31X137 @ 1,325V is the X58A-OC, resulting in a nice 87 GFlops.
82GFlops @+ 1600 7-8-7 @ voltage N.U.T.S.
84Gglops @ 1800 7-8-7 on Rex3
For the current I`ll keep tuning :D
Have kicked in some Gskill Hypers, but results aren`t as hoped.
Linx and prime stable, but even one Mhz more results in a crash.
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1972947
If using Easytune, still defaults @~3600 143x25 with Qpi@1,51:confused:
If a reboot occurs after a bluescreen, HT is reset to enabled:confused:
Hoping for a bios, that fixes things for 6 sticks - 6x Hypers max out ~1850 with Qpi ~1,55 :shakes:
Might be core or combo related, but `m not impressed so far.:shakes:
EDIT.
Some more testing done.
210X21 stable on air. Highest done on this core.
Timings had to drop to 8-8-8-21-1T though.:slapass:
Uncore running @X1,5 and HT off.
Highest core speed on air so far.
Mem still sucks though.
Next runs, with 3x 4Gb - Gskill BFR and Ultra+:hitself:
Something should work:bananal:
Did another run using the Hypers. 217X19 is max stable, mem 7-8-7-21 :ROTF:
What the hell:devil:
I'm having... hmm... experience with this board...
It is very good so far, seem like CPU's need less VTT and vDIMM to run Elpida Hypers at 4000/2000/7-7-7-20-1T.
But, it also killed my favorite CPU :( OK, it might have died anyway, but it's like borrowing a car to a friend and it breaks while he was driving. You will not hold him responsible, but it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
Booted at 5GHz at 1.55V. Set vCore at 1.6V, pressed Multi+ once and made CPU-Z s/s at 5.2GHz. Restarted.
Booted at 5GHz. Then set vCore at 1.645V (my 990X ran benchmarks many times at under 1.65V), then I pressed Multi+ button twice. Took CPU-Z s/s at 5.4GHz.
Rebooted. Noticed that vCore is 1.7V. Set vCore again at 1.645 and noticed that it does jump at almost 1.7V (checked with DMM). Rebooted.
CPU worked next few hours, while I was trying to make it run at 4.2/4.0/2.0@7-7-7-20-1T unsuccessfully, then it just stopped at C1. Dead.
http://valid.canardpc.com/cache/banner/1961756.png
Suspect/self changing vcore after BIOS set value is concerning.......... sorry to hear about the CPU loss. You were pushing it but that kind of set one thing changes itself to another higher value is just not good enough.
That's unfortunate. I have a 990x myself and would love to get a hold of the OC board. I'm hoping a friend can hook me up soon.
Here it is... 990X... Preparing for the last ride... :D
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/150...11735small.jpg
Nothing special... Never got to test it much...
http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/4...ypers20007.jpg
it does NOT self select vcore. What happens at about 1.65 on ALL X58 gigabyte boards is vcore is set a bit higher than value selected in bios which then settles as you go up but it sets a bit higher. donmarkoni played with fire with such high vcore on normal cooling, got burnt and now says fire is bad lol, i agree with him don't play with fire!
:ROTF: Yeah, fire is hot. I got reminded. :yepp:
BIOS F5c is out.
Statio, any release notes for this?Quote:

Tested F5c. Stable but still lacking 24Gb performance. Tested 2 flavours, but no avail.
Hypers run great, and even uncore seems to hold up icm. Hypers.
If it only could be a little better than this:
I thought about getting one of these to replace my R3E. Then I read this thread. It's a bunch of headache. :( Dead CPU's, board sets vcore WRONG, low large memory size performance, difficulty getting above 4ghz... I think I'll pass. It also seems like the report of super high bclk is wrong... None of you seem to be going very high...
Don`t get me wrong, the board does things my R3E can`t do. :yepp:
Hypers icm. 980X or my W3680`s clock way better, @ same settings and voltage. :ROTF:
6x Hypers also clock better, at the same, or lower voltage.
Going to 24Gb I have to give in more than I like:
Uncore: x2+1(Rex3) vs x1,5(OC) :slap:
Vqpi : 1,4v(Rex3) vs 1,51v(OC) :slapass:
If you put in the same perspective, and more important, MY WISHES: UD7v1 (Almost on par with Rex3, great 24gigs), Classy(great quad-Hyper lovin`, great 12gigs Hyper), Rex3Gene(nifty little allrounder), baby Classy(stability above all) there are no clear winners.
On air, all my core`s are stable up to ~4,4Ghz. Most of them need more voltage, than I`m prepared to give. Max Tcore for me is around 80C.
Uncore should be x2+1. Memory has to be 24Gb.
In this combo Rex3 beats X58A-OC.
Saying the X58A-OC isn`t a good board, is like saying a Lamborghini Diablo sucks.
It sucks, when you`re stuck in the middle of the Sahara, in a Lamborghini Diablo.
I didn't say it sucks or is a bad board... I said this thread makes it seem like a bunch of headache, and it seems like the initial report of high bclk is wrong.
For 24/7 I'm running 4.4GHz with 18GB Mushkin with Elpida BBSE @ 1834MHz with x2 uncore(3668). With what you said above, you've confirmed that this would not be 'better' for me. Maybe I'll get a few more mhz on core, but my uncore would be even lower...
In that case, you`re probably right.
I need some help clocking with this board, seem to have hit the 222 bclk wall :(
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2145159
Tried;
VTT - up to 1.38v
IOH - up to 1.36v
QPI is in slow mode
PCIE - 115
Any idea what the issue could be? Going from 110 to 115 PCIE allowed me to boot at 220 bclk (110 PCIE - 215 bclk boot but it still froze at exactly 222, increasing bclk with the onboard buttons) so more PCIE will give more bclk?
Can only test higher PCIE later this week, don't want to damage my 6850.
some of those gainestowns can't clock high bclk. we had the same limit like you. we were even at -60c
the board works @ 250bclk with a good 920, some cpus just don't have the ooomph
yup 250 but with slow mode under LN2 http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1809457 with a 930
Try more qpi/vtt to 1.5v and some QPI PLL to 1.3v, but yu don't want to run 24/7 at those volts. you can even try higher qpi/vtt
more PCI-E can give more BLCK, but that seems like enough already
That sucks, thought these Xeons would clock higher than the consumer parts. Swapped the chip with another E5540 and that hit a wall even earlier, 218 bclk :/
Tried 1.5v QPI and 1.3 QPI PLL on the 222 chip and it was stable at 223.1 bclk for a few seconds then froze.
Guess I'll have to look for a Bloomfield. Glad it's not the board, Googled "222 bclk wall" and the results that came up scared me.
well you had slow mode on right? My 930 there had a wall at 222 but under LN2 is went free. BLCk just isn't something you are going to get at 225+ stable working 24/7 the voltages required are usually enough to hurt. I just haven't seen it done much i guess. You are just looking for max OC? Put the system under the AC lol. Good luck mate, i am sure you will get it at some point. BTW you are using a lot of volts, but for suicide youc an try 1.55v qpi/vtt, some even have used 1.6v. i stay under 1.6v and that is only under LN2. Cold is what you need mate.
Yep, it was on slow mode. Tried swapping the RAM for 1x stick of Hypers and that didn't help (Tried x6 and x8 mem multi)
I will put it under DICE at the end of the week and report back with regards to how it goes, maybe I can prove Honda wrong and get it going at -60 hehe ;).
I'm not going for a 24/7 OC on this (Have another setup I use). Got the X58A-OC to clock a few 1366 chips, starting with the Xeons.
Thanks for the help, much appreciated. :)
After stugaling to get 225 bclk stable here we go. Here are some pics,

How do the 32nm Xeons compare to the E5500s, Bloomfields , 970s? Like the X5650 and E5620?

I ran out of DICE (Wasted on a stupid P5Q Pro).
Is it normal for the board to reboot multiple times when you change something in BIOS? Whenever I changed something, at "Verifying DMI" screen it would display another line saying something to the effect of "Detecting DRAM size" and then switch off, this will happen 2-4 times then the detecting message would disappear and it would boot normally.
It's the memory recheck feature, to make sure all dimm's are detected correctly.
your chip is good lol
Hello all, I'm an enthusiast bencher with two 980Xs (and an X58A-OC) and am deciding which one to keep.
The batch numbers are:
1. 3008A515T
2. 3005F729
I haven't been able to find much information about the first one (with the T at the end) save one submission here: http://forums.guru3d.com/showpost.ph...postcount=4835
I'm thinking of finally going sub-zero next year but as of now, I'm not sure how to find out which chip is the better clocker.
Both chips can hit 4.25GHz (170x25) with mem at 1020MHz 9-11-9-27, QPI 3.6GHz with 1.3vcore.
I'd greatly appreciate any help here from the expert benchers!
I am going crazy trying to get this board working with 2 GTX 480's and an Areca Raid card. Both graphics cards were working on my Classified, but now one of them will not work in Windows anymore. I keep getting an error in device manager that one of the had a problem that is preventing it from starting (Code 43). I have the cards in the first two PCI-e slots, from the top. Nothing I have done will get the second one to start, I have tried disabling extra components, reinstalling drivers (including driver sweeping them off), moving the Areca to different PCI-e slots, but nothing is working. Do I need to have the cards in slots 1 and 3, from the top, for SLI to work? I am nearly positive that the cards are both functioning flawlessly. Any advice? Moving the cards around a ton is a huge pain in the butt, because they are watercooled.
Once I get this figured out, I need to figure out how to overclock my i7 980 on this board. It seems much pickier than the Classified.
1 and 3 are best, but switch the order of teh cards around, maybe that will work.
You should still be able to pull out one card at a time and just let it hang there to test each card too.
Did you try switching card places? Without Areca Raid card just to see if it boots correctly (with both cards)?
Wait a bit, you're just getting to know each other. Board bios is very aggressive I believe and best result require some time to straight it out, but you'll be pleased in the end. ;)
BTW guys is it just me, board bios? I can't regulate CPU fan speed no matter what option I choose/set in bios. I'm using ordinary fan without PWM, tried two (different brand) fan and result is same they both spin at full speed?
I don't have PWM fan so I can't confirm about that.
Does anyone experiencing same problem? Bad luck?
I am going to give that a try, but it is going to be a pain, the watercooling gear won't take nicely to this. The card with issues is the second one down:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1...229_170330.jpg
Cant let them hang, I need to redo the loop every time I pull a card.
It boots fine. I get into windows and that is where the issue arises. The card is listed in device manager, but I cant use it.
Back on the X58A-OC wagon :D
Does anyone know the changes included in beta BIOS F5E?
