AMD HD6950/HD6970 1GB in a few weeks (the people's high end gpu)

if you have a 1000$ monitor, or eyefinity which goes for 500$ to whatever, then hopefully you can fork out the extra 100$ for more vram.

the point i was making is that the price for a 1GB 6970 should not be lower than a 2GB 6950, unless for MOST of their buyers the performance is showing a 2GB 6950 beating a 1GB 6970, which is for 1080p resolutions and under.

so im expecting a typo or massive price drop before the launch like others are. something just feels too nice for that price.

now they even removed half of the ram and it still seems to has the same pcb length than the 2gb version.
seriously, amd, the length of the pcb was/is the only reason amd lost and nvidia won me as a customer :rofl:

The one listed on the His website looks smaller than the 2GB 6970. Maybe this is a non-reference card? :shrug:

Edit: It also appears to have a decent overclock so I think that it's safe to say that is a non-reference pcb.

Of course, to keep a 256 bit bus you need the same amount of chips.

One reason I went with AMD instead of nvidia were that my 5770's are only an 8.5 inch footprint. ;)

It makes more of a difference in price than performance, ram is the 2nd most expensive part on the card.

But if you bought a 30" 2560x1600 screen, and you game, you're not going to be thrifty with $30 for 2GB

A 6950 for $300 unlocks to 6970, which is cheaper than any 570 deal out there.

But for a more main-stream card, the ~$100 gtx 460 deals can't be beat!

Ye, but I expected them to optimize the PCB a bit, especially since they had problems with the power connectors, and while they're at it reduce the length a bit...

Ok now this seems a lot more logicial .. 6950 1gb 6950 2gb and 6970 2gb ... no 6970 1gb.. we can imagine too some "non ref " version overclocked then. addition the 6870@975mhz ( maybe+ )... the 940mhz (PCS+) versions are allready on the HD5870 level in most games. ( even faster in some case )....

the ones that exhaust out the back of the case usually tend to make the GPU's the hottest.

The best would be a hybrid approach. Identical to the pictured card, but a single fan in the center. Half the air is directed out of the case at the back, half stays inside.

If you want to exhaust more air out of the case from the GPU you could always attach a duct to the end of the card that wraps around and empties out of a spare expansion slot.

Then just improve the IN-OUT airflow on your case....

Do you prefer a cooler (like ref coolers that blow air out of the case) but can only manage to keep your card @ 90º @ load or a cooler like this that will probably keep the card @ 60º @ load and on top of that generates less noise????

For me this question doesn't even deserve 1 second in my head... Non-Ref cooler FTW IMHO...

Is ok,i agree with you.
I got graphics like psu type-blow out air.

Inside my pc 1 spot is free that cold air comes directly into graphics fan.
And fan suck cold air into graphics cooler, and then blows out of my back side pc.

I wount say wich cooling system is better, i just dont like heat staying inside my pc.
Besides older graphics like mine "makes more heat" coz is older tech, and i dont like heat staying inside my pc.
3 big fans like on picture vs 1 midle size(as i got it)vs noise and vs power to drive 3 fans, vs 3 fans cost more then 1 fan!

Is ok(on picture)to have dvi and hdmi conectors all in one graphic card, but cost of that is 3fans and heat and more power drain vs 1 fan.


To solve this issue, it will be nice to do folowed steps, (my beloved graphics creators):
3 big fans vs HDMI connectors mounted on bracked with ribon cable that can be conected to graphic card(somhing like SLI conector)
Then you have space/room to make cooling to blow air out :)

im kinda shocked not many have tried a nice tri slot exhaust only cooler. sure some things are just so big and fat that they cannot fit in 2, but thats not designed for using 3 slots effectively. since not everyone uses up all 7 slots, they might like the idea of one big gpu that can still be quiet and keep the heat away from the cpu. i also find it entertaining that many video cards have the power coming out of the top, but do not use that extra space for a larger fan, even just a half inch in height adds ~25% more surface area, then factor in 50% deeper being a tri slot, and we have a fan that moves as much air at 2000rpms, that current ones do at 3750rpms. and with the heatsink having so much more depth, they can use aluminum which will be cheaper and lighter.

id like to see one company do it right for once, even if its a failure, just to see the test results of proper tri slot exhaust vs current duel slot exhaust.

You should talk with XFX, the did some bizarre thing with their HD5970 BE box. Even if it was uber expensive people bought them.

Dude that Gigabyte card is not a reference card, look at the HIS card posted in this thread and on their website. It is nowhere near as long as a 6950 2GB.

It may be lost in the shuffle of the GTX 560 Ti release but AMD "officially" launched this card today.

In my opinion, AMD's memory controller architecture isn't anywhere near saturated with 2GB of 5Ghz+ GDDR5. Hence why performance improvements are quite easy to come by though increasing just the GDDR5 frequency.

In addition, the IC latency is identical between the 2GB and 1GB engineering samples according to my conversations with AMD. Maybe some board partners will use different ICs but AMD's reference boards all use the same specs.
