I gave up. But I really want to get Windows on it. Yes, I know, that's not very nerdy of me, and it is more nerdy to have linux on it, but I'm worthless with linux and I can't wrap my head around it.

I think I have one if you want one. Cost of shipping only and some patience for me to mail it since the PO is usually closed by the time I get off work, so Saturdays are really my only chance to ship stuff via USPS. Or I can ship fedex during the week but for a small vid card that costs more.

Once I get video, I'll get that BIOS revision. Unless its on a label that I'm not seeing this morning. I had your list when I went shopping last night for a video card actually! LOL. I saw a 9800GT but it was $125 and I thought that was too much for a server. Plus I don't want any more power requirements than a bare minimum. Do you have a link for the most recent BIOS update? That way I can make sure I update right away. Hopefully have the most stable BIOS available.

How would you grab a bios image let alone flash the bios on this board? I mean, if we could figure out how to flash it, I'm sure somebody could add full ACPI support to it. Someone did to another Arima board a while back (saw it on another forum).

Flashrom will get the job done.Also i have found some forumers in mydigitallife community.
But our primal task is to figure out if there is a newer bios than the one is in my board.
please uses sysinfo or get into the bios to see the revision and report back.
got a question about this, can someone pm me or post the exact hardware it has on board (ethernet, sound etc) also wanted to ask is the ppd listed there for 1 cpu? or for a board with 4 cpu's?

My board with four 8347's averages in the 30,000's WCG points per day.
It has four NICs, no sound, no video. I can list the full amount of ports once I get home. It only has a PCIe x16 and an AGP slot.

I haven't rebooted mine in forever. I will be (power cord adjustments!) and I'll check my BIOS rev then. Mine doesn't have the enter BIOS issue, that works fine.
I have to admit the BIOS thing is a intimidating. Is there a chance I could screw up the BIOS on my board?

You have a point. If the command prompt is only a $ then those commands are being run as user, not as root. If that level of hardware interference can be done with only user permissions then that's a REAL worry. :shakes:Quote:

I used the desktop one, not the server version. Easier.
If you go the other way, starting with the server edition and install the desktop package on top of that, you'll get a leaner system. It's just a little more hassle getting set up is all.
I didn't select any bonus services to start up either. The IT guy in me was wanting to, but I resisted playing with all the goodies. "Stay on target..."

Welcome to the addiction mhorgel. I'm using Ubuntu Server 10.10 64-bit. It might be easier to get Ubuntu Desktop up and running. I have a little Linux experience over the years, but not much really. I was able to get the Ubuntu server up and running with just Googling around on how to do stuff. I put up some instructions there on getting it working with the 64-bit OS. Which from what I hear crunches better than a 32-bit OS...As far as CPUs, they need to be the same model. Like all Opteron 8347s. Other correct me if I'm wrong. eBay is probably the best place to look. Set yourself up a search alert.
I picked up 2 8358 SE's for $90 yesterday. I will set up a search alert for 2 more. It looks like the bay is a good place to pick up RAM.
If i would be new to 4way quad mobo,i would buy that tyan one.Our board will cost you around 120 us dollars and you could be among the ones who didnt get heirs working.Let alone that you can only use ubuntu and you have to build a custom made case.Save your self a lot of trouble and spent some 80 dollars more.This is my 2 cents.

FWIW I have a copy of Server 2008 R2 (got from the dreamspark thing when I was a college student) and I couldn't get it to work on this. So good thing you didn't buy it for this box, Linux seems the only way to go on it. Unless we can get someone who is able to edit the BIOS of the board and give it full ACPI support instead of the partial support it has now.
Something I noticed the other day - I CANNOT get into the bios through my KVM. I must have a keyboard plugged directly into the system for that to work.
I think running Linux on something like this is better anyways. You can get away with a lot less RAM and its more efficient.
Unless you're a linux idiot like me. It confuses the heck out of me :confused2

From what I've heard you would "make magic happy" over the performance of your rig running on a SSD, but it'd be wise to install a secondary HDD to run BOINC from and just put your OS on the SSD.

Rise check svc.com for asetek micro coolers. They have them on sale for 4.99. The only thing is that I'm not sure if the two closest ones would fit together but for ten bucks it might be worth a try

I'm going to run this setup for a week, then if it's good, I'm swapping Beast's power supply for the second Antec 430 I bought and the laptop hard drive. That way, both are running the same hardware. Should be reduced power usage and heat. The Antec stayed cool all night. The Rosewill is hotter than heck!
