lol, i look at it this way, it aint gotta be pretty, its just got to crunch :D
true dat
I would post a picture of my "farm" but it's just one computer. :(
We still wanna see it!
i started off with just one comp on my farm as well, it was an old p4a @ 1.4ghz
everyone here started with just one.
dont worry Pappa, that is AFTER the wife helped me with some cable management...lol it looked even worse than that :D
Nice pharm skycrane...:up::up::up:
thanks dak, i do what little i can... now if the grid would just let me use my rigs id be happy, but everytime i try to attach a new rig, a warning pops up and says that they dont have any work for my kind of computer?? :WTF: ??????
im running xp64, and server03 64bit. and it says they have no work for me :(
Old tech. ASUS P5B Deluxe & Intel quad core. Almost three and a half years of non-stop crunching. Only thing that's been replaced is the RAM. Buffalo Firestix (seen in pic) finally gave out recently. PSU is a Zippy 600W.
Board is mounted on a custom-made benching platform from Japan.

In the background is an old Vapochill phase change cooler that hasn't been used in a very long time.
More old tech. Abit IP-35 Pro with Q6600. Non-stop crunching for almost three and a half years. Video card is an ATI Rage I bought on Ebay for around $5. Still working.

Supermicro dualie with Xeon X5340's. Cruncher is ranked #2 on BOINC all-time list. More than 27.5 million WCG points on this one rig.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...0/IMG_0969.jpg
Nice cooling Sierra...
Jcool...as said, not to worry...the server will give you werk anyway.
This thread needs some.... ZIP TIES! :D
Total dodge by Supermicro when I asked for specific advice. All the guy did was echo that my concern how power may be something to look at and complain that I had the nerve to run Kingston memory in the board even though it hadn't been tested by them. Nevermind that the IMC on these CPUs controls memory and that everything in this system worked great on the H8DAE-2.
More Zip Ties!
Here is one way to attach a 38mm Delta to a megahalems

This is my first test build of "a few more" cost effective 920 crunchers. I plan on getting a case for it and push pull more quiet fans. The Asrock x58 board is running fine, and the 920 OC'd to 4.0GHz easily.
ive got a question then, why do you need to change the plug?? if the cord will handle the 240v, wouldnt the plug be able to handle it as well? its rated to handle 120v from the hot to ground, it should be able to handle the other 120v on the neutral/white side as well. Its not like your feeding 240 on just one side, your spliting it on each of the 2 sides of the plug.
for example, you can have the black as one leg of the hot, 120v
the white as another leg of hot, 120v
the green as the neutral/ground
the only thing you need to make sure is that you hook the white to the other leg that the black wire is, on the 240v main.
the wires in the house are rated at 600v, so there is no problem there. you just need to make sure NOTHING else gets hooked up to the outlet:D or you will really have some nice sparks
If you ignore code, you don't need to switch the plugs.

i think i have a title idea for srhunt3r: Antec fanboy cruncher !!!!
Whats not to like, fairly good pricing and great airflow. I use the 900 on almost all builds I do for friends and family.
My first case was a antec 200 so i understand what you mean.
Dont compare to most others on here and ive just got into computers so that explains the packard bell motherboard

Looks like a little air compressor to me.
You're right, it is a Thomas 2639CE38-190R that I pulled from a scraped O2 concentrator, its still on its shock mounts.
a little bump
i7 875k at 4.15ghz 1.376vcore and a gtx 470 watercooled by a gtx360 and a mcr220 and both crunching for wcg and gpugrid

and they are in the same room which is also my room. 31c ambient at the moment.
Nice setup there snoro. I really like the last picture. It shows your creativity when it comes to insuring adequate air-flow though the system. What is your output on those systems for WCG?
about 25-30k ppd for the i7, and for the other two well you made me realize that in the last days they had problem producing the ppd they normally do which about 20-25k for the i5 and 15k-20k for i3
I only have three cruching, here is a PIC of the 2 at my home, the other is an 2 socket Operton quad core server at my office. I'll try and get a pick tomorrow if I get time.

That's 2 X6 1055s running Linux on bootable USB drives with 1 650 watt PSU.
Ok, how do you put 2 power supplies together? I'm going to be putting together a bunch of computers for crunching in the fall, and if I could put 2 computers into each power supply that would cut costs alot!
You get Y splitter cables for the 24 pin and 4 pin ATX plug. Both the mobos in the photo are Gigabyte and have 8 pin ATX plugs. The PSU I'm using has both 8 pin and 4 pin ATX plugs so I just ran one to each board. Since I'm not using regular HDDs you could even get a 4 pin molex to 4 pin ATX adapter and use that to power the ATX plug on the mobo. I've done that and it works very well. If you're going to do this don't skimp on the PSU. I would recommend at least a 650 watt with an 80 bronze rating. You'll need separate power and reset switches for each mobo cuz when you fire one up it will start all the fans but will boot only the one you started. I use a KVM switch to control multiple crunchers with 1 mouse, keyboard and monitor. You can get Y splitter cables here. I have dealt with them several times and have been very satisfied with their service. They have just about every splitter/adapter you could ever need.
If I can be of any further help let me know.

s0lid- Your pictures SICKEN ME! Do you hear me!? SICKEN ME!!!! I wanted to vomit. Those fans aren't spinning! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!
:)
Naw, he's using flash.. Fast shutter might freeze the motions :)
Oh my no, those little fans are working 24/7, like lkiller123 said i used the flash.
judging by the amount of dust (see pic 1) , I think he's crunching 24/7 :ROTF:
Update.
I put the Opteron 1354's and the dual 8356 in cases and moved to the garage for the summer. Used a wireless card given to me by artemm and bridged the dual 8356 thru one of the 1354's. Has worked out well and think they may stay there. A couple of empty cases ready for the next crunchers.
My daughter got me a box of PC stuff from a listing on Freecycle, a usable PSU, 2 new Phenom 2 factory heatsinks and a usuable case, a bunch of case fans, also some not usable MBs and CPUs and junk PSU. You might consider keeping an eye out for people giving PC stuff away, there can be treasues among the trash.

You do, of course, have permission in writing to install BOINC on these machines?
Borging, defined as installing a distributed computing client on a machine without the owner's expressed permission, has gotten more than one person fired from their job and can leave the person open to prosecution for stealing company resources. Xtreme Systems, or any other WCG team I know of, does NOT encourage this practice and in fact actively DIScourages it.
From some information in a post [Ion] made the other day I think the worst he could do is get detention :D
Expelled is slightly worse, charged is still possible.
Lucky... All of my computers were installed with some type of Novell security softwares. There is no way to bypass anything.
Tomorrow I will try to ask for permission for the rigs to be installed with BOINC.
Written permission is good.
I know all of this ;)
I had BOINC going on my laptop (see last pic), the lab admin asked what it was, and I explained. He then said that it would be cool to see what the entire lab was capable of, since it sits mostly idle most of the time, and I told him I'd more than gladly set everything up with his permission. He OKed it, and now all 24 are up and running
He was very clear that if the students started reporting slowdowns, I'd have to back off CPU usage (currently, it's @ 100% even when they use them), but I asked about half a dozen people today, and they didn't even know that anything had been changed
I get permission for all rigs, including friends rigs, the ones I have going at work, and the ones here.
According to my PPD estimator, all of these are capable of in theory just a tad under 14k PPD, so I'm going to assume I'll get a more modest ~11-12k from them :)
Dang! Re-size a little braaa.....
Sorry...so used to TPU where things auto-resize :shakes:
If you're wondering, yes I'm a little paranoid about it. It happened a while back that some guy wrote a virus that borg'd a bunch or systems for his Folding@Home account. When it was found out he, and his team, were stripped of all the credit and he was banned from the project for life.
Ok, so long as it's all kosher/halal/sweet then it's a nice addition.
Nice one Ion:up: Now if you could get me the blondes number that would be smokin:yepp::D
.....permitting she is of legal age
Thanks :)
And it's just in time for the Supercomputer week, I'm gonna give them a few days with TPU (my normal team) then switch them over the 30th or the 31st so they're going full bore for XS by the time the event starts :)
She's not. And I wouldn't anyways
Holy sh*t
Unbelievable farms you have there..
Yesterday I started crunching for GPUGrid and WCG.
My main rig is Q9550 E0 at 3,4ghz with gainward gtx460 1gb gsglh in sli and 4gigs of ram on a evga 780i board.
Currently I have a second computer on the build, htpc one.
At the moment I have Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H rev 1.1 mobo, gigabyte gt220 1gb ddr3 version and some 3gigs of ram.
need to find a suitable case for it, psu and probly gonna get athlon II x4 640..
Money is the thing holding this project back
Here's a pic for you of the main rig
http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/6...natureimgr.jpg
That's quite a nice start
Money is also what holds me back, hence why I only have one cruncher @ my house (i7). Everything else is farmed out
Lets see some more of those farms we had running this week:clap:

Crunch On:up:
Hey I have a T60. Is yours a Core Duo or Core 2? I upgraded the CPU in mine to a C2D 2GHz, and a UXGA+ panel :) Oh, no zipties here :p:
OK here is what I had running this week. pardon the cell phone pics.
My main PC, the X4 955 @ 3.6GHz. My ATI 4870 runs on F@H. Pardon the mess.

The C2D e7400 box

My sossaman rig. Also has the GTX260 in it on F@H.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...8a768x1024.jpg
The Athlon X4 640. No case here.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...9a1024x768.jpg
And the rest - the two HPs are Athlon X2 4000+, the antec Sonata3 has the C2D e8500 in it, and then the "contraption" in cardboard on the right is my watercooled quad AMD 8347 rig :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...491024x768.jpg
Also my parents' PC X2 4400+ but it hasn't changed since the last pic I took of it a long while ago. Not running over there just to get a pic of it :p:
True cruncher there Sparky!
Wait I can run a C2 in mine? I have a Core Duo at 1.8ghz now 1.05v thanks to Biker:up:
PM me Sparky with my options please:)
The nicest rig is in cardboard:rofl:
Well I'm going to retire a few this week, can't afford the electric to keep them all going. Thinking of selling the two HP boxes and maybe also one, maybe both of the core 2 duo boxes. Then with the money raised see what I can replace them with that is more power efficient and see how close I can get to the output of those 3 or 4 boxes with 1 box that uses a fraction of the power. That Athlon X4 640 pulls about the same power as one of those HP X2 4000+ boxes does, yet has faster clock speeds, a little better architecture, and 2 more cores. Pretty cool... so who knows I may replace the 4 dual cores with a couple quads and call it a day. Will compare cost/output of an i7 and an AMD hexas too.
As far as the nicest in the cardboard, well, you try and find a case for that weird motherboard :D
Tin snips, a drill, some taps and a tin full of stand-offs and you'd be amazed how many cases it will fit!
muahahahahahaha! Franken-casemods ftw!
Main farm update, The Dell and the other computer on the lower left I ran for super computer week, can't afford to keep them on.
On the lower right are Crunchers 2 and 1, and above them is Sammy 1.

Gah! It's ... TIDY!!
I have this dream of a nice tidy 48U rack with all my crunchers in 4U cases inside. That would be lovely :D
I was wondering if this thread was real of not
Anyone got anymore / any updates? I would post half mine but i've got to goto bed :D

If you cut a piece a cardboard the size of your PSU, you can put that between the mobo and the PSU and your cruncher will take up less space  potentially allowing you put another cruncher or two in there :wasntme:

Come on Dave, you must have a camera ......show us the beef!!! :)
Hey pal, How you doing?
Still out in the jungles of Borneo or back amongst the civilized folks? :D
Compared to these farms all I have is a small vegetable patch! :ROTF:
BUT I don't know if you've seen this one yet:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ket-2011-Beast!
Hi from Dry-stralia down south from you.
Hello back Ozzie! I'll send the rain your way. Hope the clouds disappear so I can see the Southern Cross ...... my favorite Constellation!
Thanks! I actually had the PSU and HDD stacked on top of the PCI/PCIe slots, but that got shifted when I had to move it yesterday (still running OFC, couldn't afford downtime). Once I take it to my parents today (surprise replacement for their C2D E6400 I built them a few years back), then I'll put the i7-920 there. After that I think I'd have room for maybe one or two uATX rigs. We'll see. Might as well take advantage of the free electricity here at uni
Wow, that is simply amazing!!
What do you do with all of those GPUs? Getting prepared for when the WCG GPU client comes out of beta?
Also, I assume that you are use "minhund" at TechPowerUp? I don't speak Norwegian, but I know enough German to recognize that minhund translates to MyDog.
Might as well post what I have:
