Let's do it!

Seeing as this our first showing in a challenge it is likely the first most of these people have even seen of us. We only have one shot at making a good first impression. I know we are crunching as best we can but maybe we could do a little teeny bit more, like hit 7M everyday? If Decrypthon could get their multitudes to leave their PCs on 24/7 we would be toast ... so how do we convince them to try???
I am stuck in my house waiting for UPS-and I ordered the i7 from MC online today. I have to work tonight so the girl has to pick up the chip for me so hope fully I can get it humming by morning!
Just a suggestion - everyone needs to decide by oneself: to maximize the points the last few days, we should switch to single quorum projects roughly around Dec 14 - but not later than Dec 19. That way we make sure the majority of our returned results is validated.
I will probably run all my current projects ... but thought this is maybe something the anyone wants to consider.
Adapted a little quote... couldn't resist. :rofl:Quote:
the enemy outnumber us a paltry ten to one, good odds for

Give thanks, men, to SierraBound and the brave 216!
nice!
Yeah, same here.
Otis, where did you get that quote from? :ROTF:
Here's some discussion, a little bit about us, at HardOCP after the first day results came in:
We're blowing poeples minds ! :up:Quote:

doubt it.. xtremesystems did a little under 7 million yesterday as well.. just look at the team.. they are in the top 25 in members.. top 5 of total run time.. top 5 of total points.. top 5 of results returned.. also take a look at their avg points.. they have been holding a steady 6 million WCG points or higher since the start of november..
safe to say they are pretty much a hardcore WCG team.. lol but will be fun to see how close we can get to them..
Yeah, especially from the people that belongs to the worlds #1 F@H team
Go check out this thread. It's got lots of funny stuff. And now that I re-read this thread, I think the pic I have linked here is in response to another thread here in the WCG forum. But whatever, it's good stuff, so go look at it.

It's got lots of great motivational posters for crunchers, all should go read through it !
Maybe they feelin' a new kinda [H]ard.....

A quick running-by question :
I don't need to do anything more than just overclock the hell out of the machines, but reasonably, so that they last through december?
Or do I have to sign-up or register or something for this race?
I hooked up a temporary i7 920 C0 at 4GHz @ 24/7, hope shows its 8 muscles , X3340 (Xeon i5, i7? It has 8 threads :D) at 4GHz also, but more like 14/7, sorry I have to use some computer :D
The team is in the race, so if you're crunching for XS, you're in it !
First off, check out this thread
After you install BOINC, remember to set CPU time to 100%.
Anyways, is it a Xeon 3440? What voltage and multiplier? How about the temps? I have 3 waiting for me to build and I think I might have a hard time overclocking it.
That clear it up? :p:Quote:

SWEET! And as they said - we, my friends, are Xtreme!
Thx man - great link!
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm a WCG vet, I just needed to know whether anything special needs to be done. I already have a couple of machines running and added two Christmas specials :D one of which will be a 24/7 dedicated cruncher afterwards and it will be the x3440.
It is a sweet chip, C batch  but clocks very well. On air, I have set on 20x turbo multiplier and it is Linx stable and crunching at 4GHz and 1,26V, aircooled, at approx. 75°C
Sweet
I crunch for everyone :D
running total for the challenge ... 21,030,184
that puts us at a 3 day average of 7,010,061
agreed, the work matters, the points are secondary to that..
As to that tool that suggested we were hoarding points.
Anyone got his name so that I can slap him upside the head..
I do a manual update on all my machines daily just before the WCG day ends.
EKL Brocken with Panaflo 120x38mm fan at 1600rpm, Arctic MX-2 paste, but keep in mind that I don't have optimal mounting pressure and using a LGA775 hold-down :D and ambient should be somewhere at 18-19°C. Also, another chip might be far cooler, since this one is a high-leakage piece, OCs well, but I can very clearly feel the hot air coming from the cooler. Shame it hasn't got a higher multi, than I could nicely tame it with could and let it fly in some benchmarks :D
If say you turn in a WU late what happens? Do you get points? Does the work matter?
Nope, well I think what that dude from [H] meant is we save up all the completed works, and submit a whole weeks worth on WUs at once.
Lets go stuff his mouth with our magical points.
After three days
Almost 5 million lead:up:
The questions are beginning to be asked........Who invited THEM?
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
Just went over to Team China's forum. Here is something I got back from them.
"The number one team is way too exaggerating."Quote:
第一位的團隊着實太誇張吧
"The number one team has almost the same amount of members as us, but they had way too much computers."Quote:
第一名的队伍人数跟我们差不多,但电脑数量跟性能实在太强了。
And more reactions and faces like this:
Team China makes my day. I love their spirit:rolleyes:
What I like are all the people at HardOCP saying they are joining WCG to help. This challenge may get more people crunching and maybe our numbers will inspire others to get more cores!
:toast:
After four days
We're still only about 5 mill off from the next one, might have to double our output for awhile to make up for lost time :P
It;s funny when you see a team like Team China and have this mental image of one billion people..
Sort of makes you feel like the 300 Spartan facing the million Persians!
Killed a X58 motherboard today, was sliding it over on the table to hook up a kvm switch. It cut off and I could not get it to start back up. I unhooked everything and picked it up off the table, there was a razor blade laying under it, shorted it out I guess... :shakes: Or I hope that is all that got killed...
Yep, everybody knows that XS has cutting edge equipment and that razors will cut it off
been there, done that, got the tee shirt..... albeit not with a razor blade
This rig was downstairs on a table, actually there are 3 on the tables now, 14 are upstairs in the room. I had used it to spread the TIM across one of those direct touch pipe coolers and it was laying there I guess. I was hooking the new KVM up, I hooked it to the classified on the left, then the monitor in the middle then it would not reach the other rig, so I grabbed it and slid everything over radiator/pump/PSU/MB all at once. I did not have a MB box under this one it was just on the table. I guess I was in a big hurry and did not see the razor blade laying there amongst other stuff, I thought I had gotten everything out the way.
Went out and read the light meter, used more power this month than I ever have and the month is not up. Had to shut some down.... :shakes:
After five days
:woot::woot::woot::woot::woot: One for each day!:up:
When you consider the team in second place has more than 15,000 members and we have less than 1,200, I'm pretty pleased.:)
Nice job, team.
Do they really have 15,000? I never would've guessed. But hey, at least they're consistent!
These are the largest WCG teams:
I guess we just have too many PCs per person
I've got 22 cores going, and I'd guess I'm on the lower end of the spectrum.
HMMM, How to say this...
GAWD, How I love being the underdog!
Sparky: Just 20 cores in my name!;)
Well that will be 24 when my W3580 comes back but it's gone "walkabout" for a short time..
That might help get me a sliver of pie but I doubt it..:(
This is probably more like it..Pie crumbs!

I think I've seen a pic of MMs "spare" room ... have you seen the TV show called "Hoarders" ???
The man's got freakin three different models of abacus buried in there  :sofa:
We want pics Movieman!
After six days
Nice, over 9M lead :D
If our lead in the end averages out to 7 million a day I am OK with that:up:
After one week
:woot: kicking ass and taking no prisoners!
"It's over 10 MILLION!" :D
Hehe, our santa has traded his sled for something faster :p:

Movieman, I'm kicking my i7 up to 4 ghz for the christmas race. Where's the photos of the enormous computer mess?

I put the following on the OP's home forum here. I was not about to try my rusty german to do it, but they have an english section to post in.....:D
"Thanks for posting the Christmas Challenge...and inviting our Xtreme Systems team to it. We got a post from Erkan Yilmaz to join the challenge. Link here...http://www.xtremesystems.org/Forums/...d.php?t=238610
We had to replace a missing team captain to do it, but we got it done.
I appreciate the stated mission of spreading the word about DC you guys have here. A number of us on the Xtreme Systems team do the same thing. If our participation in this challenge helps that goal, good for all of us! You may note that there are really a small number of people on our team. But we put up large points all the time. Most of us "farm" a number of machines. Because of that, we are also pretty good about what hardware performs well and efficiently. I invite all of you to look at our forum, say hello, and let us know if we can help in maximizing your DC contribution. If you have found ways to increase our contribution, that would be very welcome too. :good:
I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas!
I know a number of people on my team could say this better, on the German side of the forum, since they are in your country, but I thought I'd say it in American English from the Pacific Northwest, USA.
Regards,
Bob"
great post
thanks Bob
Ya nice message bob-very welcoming

we're leaving a trail of dust behind us! we should ourselves there's a contest every month!
After 12 days
After 14 days
about 20k lead. I like :D
That would be 20M, actually... :)
If it was only 20K, I'd be firing up some of these antiques to push us ahead !
Just a walk in the park for XS WCG... WE DRINK YOUR EGGNOG !!! :D
This is like being in the Indy 500 and having a 15 lap lead 1/2 way through!
Yeah.. unfortunately, we won't make the 200 mil :(
Huh? We made roughly 100 million in 15 days. Race ends on the 24th IIRC, so how are we gonna get another 100 million in only 9 days?
Everyone, buy another i7 or two, stat!
Yeah, if only..!
I'm sure there's got to be a pile of viable short-term crunchers up there in the Northern Snow-isphere ... from memory Dave has a quad server that dims the street lights when it starts and Scott might still have his old fleet on site if not running. There's bound to be more out there for a short term push, surely.
After 15 days
I added an e4300.
Will see about a t7400 tomorrow.
After 16 days
What is this and why do you need 200 million? Just a team goal or is there a prize involved?
Congrats to all of us and KEEP ON BURNING!! The finish line is in sight, but in true XS style let's run at full speed all the way through the finish line tape, and keep on going!:rofl:
My numbers are looking reasonably good right now since this challenge has caused me to remove, or re-adjust, some slackers I had going. Seems that the farm is a bit more efficient. I actually down-clocked a problem machine and it's producing better....Go figure.....

Bob
