I for one like it!
Normally the Megahalems or Megadhadow along with the TRUE and some others tend to perform much better @ more heat.
So having tests @ 3.8GHz and around 1.35v would be great. That is when they show their really potential and then we can see if the Noctua can stay ahead.
It´s very common megashadow and TRUE not being the best ones @ Stock.

The problem with Thermalright coolers is their base. They're always VERY convex, and i7 CPUs are also convex so contact is HORRIBLE unless you lap at least the heatsink.
With a properly lapped base, I'm sure the IFX14 will match or beat it.

There is a good contact on the middle, right over cores, but can I shave 2-3'C by lapping?

Lapped both. And not much, no, just made sure they're perfectly flat and shiny. :p:
They weren't horrible to start with, but i just couldn't resist. :D
I think Prolimatech's claim that their HS works best non-lapped was only made because people screw up if they have no idea how it works.
On the other hand, their machining tech is fairly decent it seems, so no such huge gains comparing to True.

With Tridents, no. For Tridents you will need to raise the first fan:

I doubt Trident will fit, RipJaws 2GHz is generally better though and doesn't have a massive heat-spreader.
Ok guys, the work on our article has started, and it is going to take a while, since it will be a very complex test. Untill then however, my coleague poparamiro ran some quick tests, just to have an ideea about the performance of the NH-D14. I for one was stunned when I saw the results, and my poor buddy had to restest over and over again untill I could believe the results. I do not know what materials from Mars Noctua used on this one, but I never thought I would live to see this day.

Well, not surprising, is it? Beats Megahalems while being like twice bigger... I thought the difference would be more than 1c tbh.
Preliminary tests for now, the article will be very complex, anyway, i re-tested a few times because I couldn't t believe that NH-D14 would do such a great job compared to TRUE and Megahalems :)
Well, is is surprising if you ask me. First of all I cannot explain that difference, which, from my point of view is absolutely huge. Second, this kind of design was very poorly implemented untill now, and I didn't expect too much of it at high rpm. It seems that the 6 heatpipes and the Noctua touch really added something to this beast. Anyway, this is just a sneak peak, we will know the exact situation after all tests are done and re-done.

There is a big different between mounting position for this and the rest. You have to mount those others (at least Megahalems and TRUE) blowing toward the roof of the case to get the heat-piped to stay horizontal.
But if you mount this one the usual way (blowing toward the back of the case) then the heat-pipes will stay horizontal, and the liquid should flow better science it doesn't need to overcome the gravity.
Woah, the Noctua is twice as big as the TRUE. Perhaps you can combine 2 TRUEs together and see how it will compare against the Noctua:down:
And the TRUE was bigger than some others that came before it, with similar whines that it was too big/too heavy. But they got over it.

That is too heavy.
The bigger is better, as long as you can fit it in your case. The weight is very important too, but TRUE Copper has the record of 1.9 Kg.
The Specifications says:
Weight 900g (without fan), 1070g (with one fan), or 1240g with both fans installed. This is more than Megahalems (790g without fan), but is still far less than TRUE Coper (1.9 KG without fan). It is getting really close to the limit for many MB's in a upraised case.

Just posted our review. Only tested with Noctua fans, push pull on the Megahalems and TRUE, but I'll test with some more powerful fans when I get time. The other thing was that our i7 860 CPU sensor is a bit screwy at stock idle temps up to around 24C, it shows 18C in a 19C room, but once past the 24C mark it's fine. :up:
oh the endless debate on the best air cooler will rage on forever it seems. is this a viable solution for everyone, considering its size? of course not. Is the copper true realistic for everyone considering its size? of course not.
but no one is asking which is realistic for every user out there under the sun. YMMV.
the question is which is BEST.
I believe poparamiro's numbers, he is a established HS tester and has great methodology. and his numbers say this is the best out there. He did a writeup recently testing a VAST number of heatsinks. others testers are already agreeing with it as well.
maybe there needs to be size classes for the heatsinks? like heavy weights and lightweights? like boxing so people dont always have that "yeah, BUT...." to whine about.
Coz even then, people will argue against Noctua with the "colours look like a turd" argument
At least Notcua will always win the "best burgundy and salmon coloured cooler" trophy. Whatever thats worth. :shrug:
That was sarcasm and yes weight is important, but its either OK or its not, it's not a relative thing. You just start with the best performers list and drop them off if theyre too heavy for your tastes
Edit: Actually its not just the weight, its also how close to the motherboard that weight is. Because its the flexure in the mobo that will damage it. So really maybe we should have bending moment rather than weight ;)

that thing looks awfully heavy even without the fans.! id be afraid of it snapping off and taking out my videocard :)
