Thanks for the suggestion and tips on NoScript. That and AdBlocker plus did the trick. I suggest doing the same if you want to bypass it as much as possible.

This Is Ridiculous! I Do Not Want A 1000 Gift Card From Wwalmart> I Know I Shouldnt Yell But This Is What It Does To Me!!! It Yells!!!!!
thanks!
unfortunately i have to agree :(
especially at the testing on a production system. smth like that has to be done in a test environment.
however, this is not the first time we have that much issues with ads. we had exactly the same issue a year (?) ago. it started with "normal" ads as well and ended in the same scam/spam, yelling ads we have now. there even were the exact same problems with the forum table layout being randomly destroyed by the ad on the right (which often makes the forum to only use 50-75% of the available space...).
back then there also was a lot of stir and complaints as well. so i really don't know why we have to go through this yet again... :(
granted, i use adblockplus and noscript ever since anyways, but people who actually see the ads might be deterred by these dubious ads (like the "you're the 2389562395623th visitor, cklick here to claim your win!" or "click here to win xyz"). these ads are usually found on sites i don't even bother to visit...
"Click your unemploy benefits into place and get on with your life, too!"
Oh, come on. Most of us here are either HS/College students or adults who at least have the money. Why is it the time to talk about unemployment?
"I got ripped in 4 weeks!" For christ sake do MEMBERS really have to put up with these ads? Visitors I can understand, but members? Atrocious, poor show.
ED - Just taken Xtreme measures :p: added all adfilters known to man and... bye-bye ads :D
Just get Select View stops ads in IE8
I don't mind the "Get Ripped" ads ;)
But, just a word of warning - the Dazzle teeth whitener and other similar ads are scams, so don't be tempted.
OKAY so now what do i do about this intrusive nanny of a script blocker that is bothering me on each and every site that i visit on this here internet? Amazing how terrible this whole situation is. Holy crap! I just tried to fix the spelling on the word terrible and the frickin NoScript app has added a option in my right-click menu....GTFO of here GGGAHHHHH!!!!!
Ive got this BS as well. I know I could go back to FF and get rid of the ads but still. Ill give up XS before I give up Chrome. I can handle ads placed along the top, side and bottom as long as they do not interfere with the forum. But the above is just pure BS. XS isnt part of the gamespy network now is it? :ROTF:
XS used to be a wonderful place, 2009 has just been downhill between the downtime earlier in the year, invasive ads and the crossforum wars its getting unbearable.
yea i couldnt find where my urlfilter.ini file was
so i found this app that does it for you.just unzip
and start it,change language to english and your good
to go.just have opera off when you do it.

I Agree XS was such a good community and now its just one thing after another this year, lets censor Bitspower again, it has been a bad year for this forum I spend most of my time on Hardware Cannucks now
Atleast their forum is well laid out fast and reliable I also check several other forums including XS but I have been checking this thread to see if the admins would comment, Fugger is probably behind this but they havent even commented like oh they will be gone soon, it was a mistake on our part, making XS look like some cheap :banana::banana::banana: site.
However nothing yet.
Good Job Guys Good Job

I'm advocating people use adblockers and/or web filtering. I use both. I use AdBlock because I'm not always on my home network and because it helps with my battery life....and I use web filtering so that I never see the crap when I'm at my apartment, regardless of the computer I'm on.
Web filtering at the DNS server will prevent ads from being shown on any browser on any OS (I don't even see ads on my iPhone when on my apartment's wifi). I originally used OpenDNS because Comcast's DNS server sucks and cuts out too often, but turns out it's great at web filtering (if you setup a profile, it's free and they don't bug you). If you do go this route, make sure to check the "Adware" and "Phishing" checkboxes on the filtering settings page :yepp:
It's really great not seeing these ads--I know I'd be pissed as :banana::banana::banana: if I had to see/hear them.
Ads prevent me going to XS on my mobile, the amount of data for reading my inbox is just tooooooo excessive.... Its such ashame.... I reported thread, with the purpos of making Charles see it, apparently he havent yet, and he is unreachable on MSN as well :-/
Cant someone send him a SMS or something? :-/
Oh and please, guys LET ME know if you find something effective to remove using Chrome
BababooeyHTJ,no problem.
even using these adblockers and stuff
we still have this page size and layout
to put up with.is this due to the ads?
is the forum going to continue being
choppy and out of whack for good?
really is hard having to scroll to the
right to change pages.

Guys, I don't really think you should blame XS for this kind of ads. As far as you know, XS is free to join, with people often giving out donations, and it DOES cost a lot to maintain this community to the level. I don't think we should take this privilage as granted. XS is a wonderful community, and it always will be. Don't let those ads spoil the fun that you can have at XS.
I am actually thrilled to have a few Gigabyte, Crucial, Adobe, and those other tech-related ads on the site, but those scam/random websites (free Wii, Walmart, get ripped, white teeth, and ESPECIALLY EVONY) ads must be gone. It is not nice to see XS looking as a cheap, pointless site.
Finally I installed Adblock Plus but the spam/scam ads have to go.
Completely and totally uncalled for ads. Last thing I need is a screaming ad telling me "CONGRATULATIONS!"
Please, fix this now.
Yeah guys, seriously! What's with the :banana::banana::banana:-site scam ads? I am at work and these ads keep screaming at me unexpectedly. At least disable them for the paying members.
This is such a disgrace, and they continue to do so until removed.
This is supposed to be the Number 1 hardware enthusiast site in the world.
Even with all the paying members Fugger's still short of money? Who in their right mind would click on it anyway? :(
We shouldn't have to run adblock software to get rid of this.
Just adding my $.02. I haven't donated b/c I don't have the money right now. As such, I don't mind ads at all. I was not getting adblocker because I don't want to keep the site's ads from getting the impression...I don't pay, I should look at the ads. It's even fine with me to have non-hardware related ads; hey, you've got to pay the bills, I understand that.
All of that said, the ads yelling at us have absolutely got to go. It's ridiculous. I'm used to seeing and indeed expect junk like this from random crap sites around the internet, but not a place like XS. I'm embarrassed for the forum.
Hey Charles,
I seriously love this forum for many reasons. I as many others don't have the money to sub because of obvious reasons.
Honestly the Voice ads are over the top, and really annoying. I realize you need funding to keep the site going. However, I am not the only one getting annoyed by these. I shouldn't have to use a different browser or customize my browser for one particular thing that I don't encounter on other sites/forums I regular.
Pics/images etc fine. But the voice ones are starting to grind on my nerves.
god I got to disable ABP and NS to hear what those ads sound like :D If you guys didn't talk about it I wouldn't even know it.
IS there a good adblocker for IE or Opera or are they just firefox. These ads are f'ing loud
here you go.
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail...a/1252663378/1
or if your good with editing you can just create a urlfilter.ini file with notepad
after you paste this info in notepad name the file urlfilter.ini, and put it in your opera profile directory.
and for internet explorer IE7 pro works great.Code:Opera Preferences version 2.1
; Do not edit this file while Opera is running
; This file is stored in UTF-8 encoding

hope it works for you and you get some peace.
just wish they had some addon to fix the page size mess:mad:
Why are the ads not related to computers ? they should all be related to computers, processors, motherboards etc, Gigabyte, Asus, Msi etc ads ??? they will get clicked then, but wallmart ?. I can understand takes alot of bandwidth to run this site, and money, so ads are not a problem, just put up the right ads that relate to the content, thats my 2cents.
Completely and totally uncalled for ads here

Really, this is a step in the wrong direction:
http://content.yieldmanager.edgesuit...9baec41bd2.gif
http://content.yieldmanager.edgesuit...92e1622b71.gif
http://content.yieldmanager.edgesuit...927194f81d.gif
These are just the gifs, some of the flash ones are just as bad.
Do you REALLY think I'm going to click on these ?
They remind me of when I first started using the internet with my 14.4k modem :/
I just dont understand it. This is the No1 site.....manufacturers know this surely ?
Create your OWN ad management system (I normally using OpenX) and you can then choose delivery times, weights, etc. I've integrated OpenX into many vbulletin forums before.
Then, manufacturers can advertise. Maybe even suppliers.
This has to be one of the hottest threads on XS !
Even though we're not hearing anything here, I'm sure it's being taken under advisement.
But I'll say it again, the talking ads have got to go !!!
 (screenshot)
there's another one with a kid; won't show it out of respect for the kid.
edit: hey I got French localized ads as well...a concentrate of the best of breed ads we got there :yepp:
I have noticed XS going downhill as of late but this is an all time low...
Concerning my last post, I don't see ads at all, just wanted to have a look with NS and ABP off... some forums have disturbing ads, but that's nothing compared to what's going on here :yepp:
Ads are cash grabs, plain and simple.
I agree. I am not even jumping on the hate bandwagon since I made no opinion either way as to how the ads bother me. To me, looking at world hunger and USA.gov ads along with the "You are the 1000000 winner" crap really demeans a site like this. If I don't like the ads, I will block them and be done with it. Anyone that whines about it yet does not block them is really only hurting themselves. I will never click an ad no matter what the potential benefit could be. I don't trust that crapola.
I am installing adblock right now and suggest anyone else that is bothered by this crap to do the same. Any way you look at it, hosting any type of advertising like this on this site really takes credibility down a peg. You may feel otherwise, but these ads are over the top.
That goes beyond my tolerance now. I can't open pop-menus on top of site to use even search :(
http://www.upload.ee/thumb/251455/xs_bug.JPG
...and it's not my network's problem. Same goes at home and work.
the talking ones got to go. i could care less about ads but when i take a break from playing a game or watching a tv show on my computer and come on here and look i shouldnt have to mute or turn off my speakers.
its really freakin annoying when you click on the next page and an annoyingly loud ad pops up.
its getting to the point where its going to drive me away from this forum.
there's no way in hell im going to pay to view a public forum.
Normally, I could care less about ads... I lost the ability to even notice them long ago. But these new freak'n screaming ones need to go. I rarely surf XS during work breaks anymore because of this. I'm tired of looking over my shoulder for bosses/co-workers or having to mute every time I want to hit XS during the work day.
Anybody know a way to block ads on chrome?
Edit: got the stupid, loud "mystery package" ad from posting this... :)
can't believe it. As said I got NS and ABP active permanently, and I discover that stuff in your posts here. There's no other word: that's no spam anymore for some ads, this forum is purely and simply displaying scams...worse stuff ever, next step is :banana::banana::banana: or what
Wow i cant believe everybody is so against ads, to me ads are fine, have to pay the bills, the problem is there not relevant to the content of this forum, so there pretty bad.
put up some computer related ads, and some google text ads , if ads bug you people so much dont click them, but i understand the talking ads have to go .
Would you rather have ads ? or go to a paid membership ? cause thats probally what it boils down to.
talking or not there are no other place where I'm registered displaying stuff like that:
( screenshot borrowed here: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=154 )
http://www.upload.ee/image/251455/xs_bug.JPG
Three pages of complaints and not a single response. Tsk tsk...:shakes:
Neo maybe read a little more into the thread this thread was started because
We dont care about ads. period.
Please relevant ads.
We have the crucial ads and some OC competition ads thats cool
What we are comlaining about
:banana::banana::banana::banana: site style ads
XS looking cheap
Ads with music or sound to them
Ads which overlap threads I cant even read the for sale section sometimes,
No ads when logged in if we can if we cant please ditch all the cheap looking scam ads
Spacing since the ads came in (the new crappy ads) threads are wayyy to the left it makes every look like crap its not just oh they put some ads up.
Everything in the site changed load times are :banana::banana::banana:tier then ever.
now the ads are talking :( - gonna use no-script
and gambling of course...
http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q.../th_casino.jpg
I just made my first intimate contact with adblock :D
I just installed Adblock Plus lol ( for the very first time ) :D
Ads are ok as long as they're not disturbing... now... talking or screaming or buzzing stupid flash ads for stupid stuff and scams ? I would love to kick the bloody blokes who designed those stupid and incredibly annoying ads :horse:
Charles, just make a deal with 2-3 hardware vendors or shops, and have their banners placed on the site with "local" code and it's cool.
Win-win situation, you have control of the location and ad type ( just make sure they're not alive :p: ) and better stats handling.
I´m happy Opera user = no adds now. :D And I´m willing to use any means necessary to achieve add-free XS. At least talking ones.. rest I will simply ignore as I do on all pages on web.
"Congratulations, Congratulations, Congratulations..." "...you've been selected to become a part of our scam and recieve a fake Walmart $1000 gift card!"
I did this for chromium, works with IE7 as well. Now its back to the same old XS we know and love.
dont flame as im not really trying to put down the helpful people with the solutions to our problems but...isn't anyone else a bit turned off by the fact that we have to accomodate ourselves with these "work arounds" anytime something like this happens (like that URL avatar thread a while back) instead of the admins hearing us out and trying to cope with the community?
im very turned off.this is ridiculous.
What the hell is up with these ads anyway? I thought Fugger or XS in general was against them?
The ones with sound pissed me off tonight while playing some music over my speakers at increased volume.
Installed Ad blocker myself. I understand having to pay the bills also. That is the reason I always try to not run ad blocking software. Its when the Ads affect the forum by screaming at you and start covering up parts of the forum that it becomes an issue.
Seems it is going to become another bananas thing where not official response is posted and it drags on for alot longer than it needs to. :shakes:
i am super pissed about these ads that shout at me
Well, here is my opinion, but its just that: An opinion. The ads didn't bother me UNTIL they had audio. That simply sucks because as you navigate around here on XS, sometimes you get to hear the same ads beginning over and over like some derelict remix. Also, why not have ads from content related to these forums? I'm looking at an ad for Embassy Suites, who can afford to go anywhere these days???...LOL How about a CES banner? Intel, AMD, Infinity Ward, no wait. Strike the last one...
I understand that there are costs involved in running and maintaining these forums. I would not say that ads are the only way to cover these. There are other options available and I do not know if Fugger has looked at all options and decided that ads would be the best fix for the problem. Hopefully he will respond to some of these posts SOON so that we can feel like our concerns are being taken into consideration. I will be disabling the ads also until something changes. Talking ones simply put: S U C K.
Duke
I didn't really think much one way or the other about ads here until the damned things started talking to me. I don't like talking ads...musical ads...fart ads...
Revenue is good. But I think talking ads really take any site down a few notches. Last time I ran across a talking ad was on Imageshack and that was only one ad for a short period of time. XS is better than that.
wtf, ducking sellouts, tut tut tut....
I am real close to staying away from this forum. These ads are obnoxious beyond belief.
I don't care about normal ads, but TALKING ONES? No.... just no.
EDIT: Speak of the devil. Scroll to the top of this thread, and guess what, TALKING AD. :shakes:
it's not just talking ads guys, I wouldn't mind only about these, but about the nature of some ads here, "you just won..." , these are pure scams, not mentioning the ones about gambling , casinos etc...
Many of us here are also members on security software forums, yep, those guys fighting malware...and I know by the way it looks like now that it's gonna end up like that, with iFrame stuff and trojans on XS, it's just a matter of weeks until it happens
edit: just adding that this tells a lot about the respect one has for users here: the fact that those ads are here in the first place, and the fact that there's no feedback (I know most admins have nothing to do with what's happening).
http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q...tome_02/en.jpg
Exactly.
You guys have GOT to stop the scam ads, it is ruining the good reputation of this site.
How can anyone coming here for the first time and seeing trashy scam ads all over the place even begin to take this forum seriously?
I know that many regular users / contributors are having enough trouble reconciling this issue as it is...
Is it just this site that is being hijacked or is the legitimate webserver that provides the infinitely more appropriate techcentric ads that has been compromised?
Answers on a postcard....
God damn those talking ads.
I used to have just Crucial ads but now it's everything.
Just blocked them all. The audio ones are a big pain in the ass. I see mine and everyone else's $25 donation has been put to good use
yea its a little embarrassing sporting these red titles about now:rofl:
i have found a solution to the problem, just click here:
advertisement solution :D
tell me when the audio ads are done, im not coming back until they are gone
I just installed ABP to get rid of those talking ads. It's one of the most annoying things to be surfing XS with music then have "Congratulations! You've been selected to win a $1,000 Wal-Mart gift card" shout.
In this manner the forums stands to loose some of the members who contributed to making it the No. 1 resource for all things hardware. It's NOT fair to sacrifice one of the best sites on the net for a junk. No way. I understand that publicity is needed to cover the maintenance and hosting costs but not with spam/scam and othed bs ads. I am OK with ads from Gigabyte, Asus, Intel, AMD, Sapphire, HIS, Antec, Lian Li, Biostar, Silverstone, Coolermaster, Alphacool, Swiftech, Danger Den, Koolance and other hardware manufacturers.
No official response to the thread, no removal of the ads, XS at its best  all the more reason why my account will be inactive and abandoned soon.
Install AdBlock Plus and the ads are history. It would have been fine if we had ads from Google. These stay in their place and don't shout and cover the whole page.
