That is a great question Hampti, I simply flashed to 0902 because it was the most recent but I have no idea how it compares to 0801?

Hello Sacha,
Pretty damn nice review you got there. i bought my self that board but the GENE version of it. Im planning to do a review about it, as soon as I receive my new memory. I am the manager of a small specialized PC shop, so Im planning on doing some review's as well. My partner also have a Maximus Gene 2 with a I-7 920, gonna do some test with both machine's soon.
Edo and this??

Ah thanks a lot for your answers. So now i must make a s1156 mounting for my ss and then lets fetz.
@Sacha. Please could you send me a PM with the contacts of the builder of the tripple stage? And maybe points like power and price ;-) This would be great.
The cascade was built by myself, doing something like this takes a lot of time and money to build, if it is your first time I recommend you to look at the Phase section here on XS as there are loads of people willing to help you get started or recommend someone who will build a unit for you.
I don't build any units due to the problems associated with phase change so sorry will not be able to help you, but as said take a look at the phase section hear on XS.
Ok Thanks.
Hi,
hey Sacha, what is ur max screen with Core i5 750 on airecooling ? and what is the max Vdimm in bios?
ty
Can you sacha tell us, is that supremeFX sound card any good? I was wondering that is it based on AD1988B chips just like the older asus supreme line soundcards, or is it based on creative chips?
Maybe CA0110?
CA0110 datasheet
The bundled audio module uses either the ADI AD2000B codec (depending on whether they have stock left since ADI left the codec business) or more probably the new VIA VT2020 codec.
It's not a true X-Fi card since most of the X-Fi features are performed in software even if it comes with some Creative X-Fi hardware (crystalizer). It also comes on a separate PCB with dedicated filtering and EMI shielding so it should sound better than pure onboard stuff on that fact alone. By how much though and does it even matter... I guess it depends on how much of an audiophile you are.
Anyone tested the "ROG has introduced GameFirst" ?
Dont like it at all. dont like the color scheme or the fixed height. really hate the ghosty transitions on the right. And youd be better off having don sitting back in his seat rather than just his face showing at the start. sorry its a bad review.
Welcome to the forum GuitarCrazyo, nice to have you aboard! Despite my best efforts I couldn't figure out what you meant by "And youd be better off having don sitting back in his seat rather than just his face showing at the start", can you explain in more detail what your referring to? I went back to the first page but didn't have any luck? Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this......
Is there any problems with this board and the Noctua NH-U12P SE2 CPU cooler? Thinking mainly about the backplate, and if it will interfere with the cooler backplate...
I'm not positive about the Noctua heatsink but I needed to slightly modify my ProlimaTech Megahalem backplate because of the stock LGA1156 backplate getting in the way. Basically I needed to add a washer between the heatsinks backplate and the motherboard so that it would fit over the stock LGA11556 backplate and sit evenly. This was fairly easy to do and now the backplate sits perfectly and works great. I realize I don't have the same heatsink as you but many heatsink backplates are very similar in appearance so I assume you will run into the same problem?
Yey, my maximus formula III came couple of days ago and I can concur, the audio chip in supremeFX sound card is indeed VIA VT2020. Don't know about the quality of vt2020 and centainly not supremeFX board, but according to techreports test, Asus P7P55D Deluxe which has the same chip isn't so impressive.

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/8818/supremefx2.jpg
http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/3720/supremefx3.jpg
One other note too. Has anyone tested this board with NTttcp or other network utilyty? This is very disturbin too, since this board has Realtek RTL8110SC network chip and it performs poorly also in the same techreports review. I found similar results from couple of years old review too. http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=3142
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/9950/rtl8110sc.jpg
So, can this be true that expensive top end board such as this has something so low end silicon as the network chip?
No matter if some test says its very good or just good sound quality, most ppl that use this board will not have a chance to hear if its uber or not. What does matter is that it supports EAX 4.
Hi ! Did anyody tested the new bios 1105 from here http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...-ASUS-1105.zip ?
Does it support older bios to be flashed now, or is it the same as 0902 ?
P.S. Btw, does any of you have this problem with Win7 x86 ? Everytime i leave my computer turned OFF for more than an hour, my first boot will end up in a blue screen window. I have to force it to power off then power on again. I've tried everything, but can't find a single error. Prime and LinX stable for more than a day now... What could be wrong on the cold boot ?
Just flashed latest bios.
Sorry to hear about your BSOD problem. I havn't heard anyone else have the same problem. At the time you wrote this forum post, I couln't find that bios in asus site, nor the asus update could find it either. There are couple of new features, like LN2 mode, OC tuner utility and OC tuner limit value. Also I noticed that the motherboar now detects the first voltages, for ram and cpu right on. Older bios did give way too much voltage at default. As a result, the CPU temp in bios was reduced to ~34-35C rather than ~40C. 1105 bios also sets the PCIe frequency at 100 at default, not auto like in the old bios.

MonkY - Thanks for posting about the new Maximus III Formula BIOS file (although like stuffme I also couldn't find or download the file that day)? Thankfully it worked fine today (found file and downloaded it) and after reading your initial thoughts on the file stuffme I'm looking forward to flashing my board ASAP! I will try to post back later with my two cents about the file.
For me this bios is super stable, except that damn cold boot that makes the whole PC crash. I've tried disabling iROG and other features (that could interfere at first cold boot) but didn't helped. Also increasing voltages didn't help either. I don't really know what else to try...
Updated 1105 bios from official ASUS site. Using regular EZflash procedure. It flashed ok, told "successful update, reboot automatic 5 sec" and board went dead.
No post anymore.
I've reflashed BIOS with my own programming stuff, from binaries published on ASUS site and no go still. Tried 0603, 0902 and 1105 versions.
Thanks for posting about your experience with BIOS 1105 although I'm sorry to hear about it! With that said did you get the motherboard back up and running (or is it officially dead)! This may be a dumb question but are you pretty sure that the BIOS 1105 caused this to happen or could it have been something else (its certainly making me hesitant to flash to this new BIOS version)!
Dead so far.
Mobo died just after flash. No other things was done before or later.
It power ups , but no POST, and that stupid led near ATX just light on "CPU" and no any changes.
I tried to flash mobo on program hardware, checked contents of flash chip (8pin DIP near corner of PCB, on panel), i was flashed right.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question, its appreciated (although again I'm sorry to hear about your board)! What is your plan now, are you going to try RMA'ing the board (if so please keep us posted on your RMA experience)!
No RMA in ukraine :) Will continue work on repairing, will try to get raw binary.
If anybody have m3f and SPI programmer I'd like to get binary from their BIOSes
Repaired this stupid motherboard.
Needed to use logic analyzer module for this with DIY hardware flash chip programmer.

Will never buy any ASUS products :(
Well, a new BIOS version is out. v1202 with some updates:
1.Improve memory compatibility
2.Fix some PCIEx1 LAN card can't be detected at PCH PCIEx1 slot.
3.Update CPU Level Up function.
4.Fix CPU power always show 2.5W in EPU software.
5.Fix system may halt in POST after AC power loss during BIOS update
You can get it from here: ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/LG...-ASUS-1202.zip
I hope it will fix my cold boot problems... otherwise, will just got and RMA this.

well looks like the maximus 3 formula suffers from the same problem as the maximus 2 formula. very poor contact on the vregs heres the proof:
this is a retail m3f just got here really to bad no heatsink on it yet so there has been no board warping whatsoever. i added washers to the back and it seems to not halp at all
Yes board and Great pics of it also thanks for the share.
Hello, I am new to this forums and I'm found this site interesting and useful.
I’m looking forward to join on the forums, helping people out with my thoughts and learning from others.
Heads up for extreme overclockers using the ASUS Maximus III Formula with the Clarksdale CPU's.
There seems to be some incompatibility in the TurboV software when overclocking, when pushing Bl:banana::banana::banana::banana: the system will lock and change registers for VTT, PLL, and Dram.
Am not sure if this problem is apparent for normal usage/air or water overclocking, but for extreme use please note that you could run into problems with your CPU's when using the turboV software to raise the Bclock.
See picture below that clearly shows the registers changed from a setting of 1.35VTT and 1.7VPLL to 1.1VTT and 2.5PLL, when pushing Bclock, which will without any doubt will have a detrimental effect on your CPU.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...0/DSC01153.jpg
I have been told that ASUS are working on a fix for this problem but in the mean time please be aware that using the old TurboV software could be detrimental to your CPU when pushing Bclock.
As always, all that "Overclocking megasupersoftware" is just dump and stupid :D. Design, aimed like idiots, of these "tools" says for itself. :D So they work as they look. Use SetFSB ;)
Hallo,I just bought this Mobo,i built my new gaming ring.Switched on and doesnt work, still freeze in bios.Cant even flash bios.Sometimes switch on sometimes have only black screen on lcd.
I pluged on ROG conector to my laptop and there show cmos error.. i try everthink..OKmem strart..clear cmos..everothink still doesnt work :o( ... do you think that mobo ist break?..do i have ta make a reclamation?.. .. sorry for my english and in advance tnx for help...
Nice results , how about today foxconn sockets?
Affected burning badly. Just screwed M3F with xeon, during 5 hours, never used quadcore, only 2 cores was enabled, voltage never above 1.56V.Quote:

Will never buy any asus product from now.

Say thanks if I helped :)
anyone test yet the 1305 bios.,mind to share..
I can say it works and Clarkdales are suported. No Lynnfield OC info yet.
I kind of get the idea that only old batches of this board are _sometimes_ affected. I'm running this board for ~3 weeks now, checked and reseated chip and HSF yesterday, there are absolutely no signs of damage at all.. I'm running a i7 860 with over 1.41 on VTT and VC btw. The overclock is 3 weeks heavy load stable and counting (Folding@Home bigadv, loads somewhere between Prime and Linpack).
I have to note that the Realtek R8110SC gigabit chip used on these boards is somewhat less than ideal. There's always link down problems, not really that practical if you're running the box headless with only ethernet connected to it... unstable peace of you know what. But I already ordered an Intel card so I don't care anymore. People should know though. :D
hi, I'm having some problems with this motherboard with corsair and team group memories..
I tried a Corsair Xms3 1600 Cl8 1.65v kit, and I can't run stable, even if I use the XMP .. Bsods and errors during the memtest..
So I decided to try the mobo with a Team Group Xtreem 2000 Cl9 Low voltage kit, same problems :(.. The maximum IMC voltage that i tried is 1,25v ... and i think it's enough for a daily use configuration.. Am I wrong ? have I got to try an higher IMC voltage ?
I really do think you're being a bit too conservative on the volts. There's nothing wrong with giving more IMC and core voltage, as long as you can keep it cool. I'd start with 1.3v and work my way from there, keep it below 80-85°C and you're set. :)
For all i5/i7 it's the same rule, stay within .5v difference of VTT and DIMM volts (IMC volts on 1156), but you have to find out which the right combination of both voltages is.
A new update is out. Bios 1501 will update a few things and hopefully fix the big bad bugs:
You can get it from here: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...-ASUS-1501.zip or check the Downloads page (as it's now oficial): http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_I...qmr&templete=2Quote:

Going to update right now and report back :)
all true mine have more contact, I still see a problem in the midle

Everything seems ok, except the cold boot problem (if i start my computer after a long period turned off... my windows keeps giving me bluescrens. If i enter in BIOS and wait for a few secconds, then turn it off and on again, no more blue screens).
So, for me it didn't fix the main problem... but it didn't cause another, so...
Wow, they keep updating this board (i'm amased, as their tech support forums decided to delete my complaining posts). For now, bios 1607 is out. Still hoping...
Maximus III Formula 1607 BIOS
1. Improve memory compatibility
2. Improve system stability
3. Fix 2.2T HDD size is wrong if Quick Boot option is disabled
4. Improve compatibility with some USB3.0 devices
5. Support new CPUs. Please refer to our website at: http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...Language=en-us
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...-ASUS-1607.zip
I have your problem on a Maximus 3 GENE. Every cold boot gives me a BSOD, no matter what i do. I power off the motherboard, BIOS gives an overclocking failed error, i press F1 to enter the BIOS, save the SAME overclock values as i had and everything just boots fine from there.
I have my i5-750 clocked at 4200 with RAM at 2000 and it's perfectly stable once it passes the first BSOD-boot. I already tried all BIOSes available and all do the same. It doesn't make a difference to mess with any voltages and PCI-E clocks, RAM Timings, etc.
She's about to be returned next week if i don't find the cause and solve it. Meh @ ASUS.
Tried uninstalling all sound drivers and then cold booting? Fixed it for me, just trying to find a creative driver that lets me cold boot without a bsod loop now..
I don't even use the Maximus default sound card anymore (i also suspected it to be faulty) so i have Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty Professional. The problem with testing to cold boot is that you have to wait over an hour before trying again. Otherwise it boots just fine. I guess my next mobo will not be an Asus anymore
The soundcard test didn't pass. Disabling the card and uninstalling the software didn't solve the cold-boot-bug. This one is getting returned.
Hi, thanks for the review...
I've been looking at the Maximus III and the Foxconn Blood Rage for a while now, but I'm still torn between the 2... Just wondering if you have any thoughts on the choice I should make? Maximus or Blood Rage? Or, possibly something else around the same price point? (£200 tops, probably :))
Thanks in advance.
:)
I dont and never had cold boot issues...
I do have stability issues now with ram on the new 1601 bios.
Like the board but tipical Asus bugs, poor bios support ect... I'm going back to 801 as it was the best bios imo for bandwidth and stability
Thanks for sharing
Downclocked my ram , tightened the timings, lowered the VTT (From 1.24v to 1.19v) and I haven't had a cold boot problem since.
Bios 1706 is out:
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...-ASUS-1706.zip
Changes (oficial):
1.Fix system might hang when using Clarkdale i5 655 CPU and DIMM with 1600Mhz default SPD.
2.Fix BIOS setup might show incorrect Target DRAM Frequency when using DIMM with 1600Mhz default SPD.
And again, an update. This one might be the one to fix the cold boot problem (as i see it's fixing memory compatibility). Fingers crossed:
BIOS 1801 released June 7, 2010
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...-ASUS-1801.zip
Description (ASUS):
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ 1801 ]
----------------------
1. Improve memory compatibility
2. Improve system stability
Yes. If i keep my computer turned off for a while... when booting up, i usually get a BSOD (after about 30 sec or so). If i start the computer, enter in BIOS, stay in there for 10 sec, turn off and then turn on again, the computer is 100% stable... no BSOD's.
Well, seems like this BIOS does the same... BSOD's all the way. I will try to take a look at the debug led. How would that help me ?
Hi people, I have a huge, like HUGE question. Next week Im picking one of this MB, paired with a 875K and the Corsairs of my sign. After reading the whole thread but can't get about those "BSOD with Cool Bug", is that always like that or only when you are running DiCE, Cascade, LN2, etc?
I will have those problems every day with a normal OC with air/water cooling? Hope not, if not I will post a pic of my balls ripped apart from his steak-friend :(
I am using now 2 x TeamGroup Team Xtreem 4GB DDR3 2000MHz CL9 (8GB). The voltage is at 1.65V. If i get past the cold boot crash, i have zero memtest errors, linx/prime running for 24hrs without crash. It only happens when i start my computers... and that's getting really annoying !
I've tried with only 2 modules of RAM. Same problem.
I have the IMC voltage at 1.20 now and 1.65V on mem, timings are 9-9-9-24 at 2000Mhz. I've tried IMC at 1.30 (and even higher) with no success. The strange thing is: even if i boot with default settings (no overclocking) i get the same BSOD's from Cold Boot. And the BSOD's are so bad that i usually get lost files everytime... and that's something i can't risk everytime i start my computer. And i really can't let it run 24/7...
I don't know what else to do... i'm getting tired of waiting for Asus to launch a free problem bios...
hello people
I'm here with a problem not quite know what this is.
I have one Asus maximus III formula , and Gskill ECO 1600Mhz CL7.
In making the bench maxxmem, or everest on the RAM, get some values for READ, WRITE and COPY.
But for example putting the PC into sleep mode (windows 7 64bit)
the Pc shuts off completely (fans, power, cpu ....)
to waking (it takes about 5 seconds) it's all equal before suspend, but the timings of the low memory (CL)
Ex: Before 7-8-7
after 6-8-7
and the values of read ... rose considerably (not due to the timings because already tested directly with these timings)
For example, the copy is only 13000Mb / s to 17000MB / s
He liked to see why , if anyone knows thank you.
The bios is the last 1801.
Sorry my English
sorry, delete this
you have your ram running at 2000MHZ and vtt at 1.30?
the board defaults to 1.35vtt for 2000MHz ram (20x200) maybe try 1.35 and see if your issues are resolved.
I need for 20x200 (860) 2000MHZ ram @ 9-9-9-24
vCore 1.375
IMC 1.35
PLL 1.90
PCH 1.046
Dram 1.65
180x25 (655k) ram at 1800MHX 8-8-8-18
vCore 1.425
IMC 1.378 (anything lower and BSOD)
PLL 1.80
PCH 1.046
Dram 1.65
both setups run rock solid and pass 25 loops IBT, I have only had issues running bios 1601
Well, same results for 1.36V. It doesn't seem to be the sollution. After all, if i go into BIOS at cold boot, wait for a few secs, turn PC Off and then back On everything is ok. LinX, Prime, OCCT, Memtest... everything is OK. But i can crash my Windows completelly if i forget to go into BIOS every time i cold boot.
Yes, i actually just upgraded a few days ago from 8800GTS 512 to GTX 465. The problem is still there. Andy my Asus dealer doesn't want to RMA the board for something like this... Silly, as it was the most expensive board in their shop when i bought it...
Hi, if you can remove the circle with the logo of ROG?
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/4043/beztytuuys.jpg
Hey guys, Im downgrading from my i7 930 to a i5 rig, Was just curious though, U think the maximus III beats the p55 gigaboard dinos reviewed? in terms of overclocking?
Though I'm not sure which Gigabyte board you're talking about (can't find the review), I'd go with the M3F anyway :p:. After getting my P7P55D EVO (a great board as well), I've become a big fan of Asus :p:.
Best mb I tryed so far, need to upload an image of what I got :)
BIOS 2001 is out. Get it from here: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...-ASUS-2001.zip
Asus "official notes" for 2001 update:
1. Improve system stability
2. Support new CPUs.
Is it still beta?
Could someone please post up a bios template for a 3.6-4ghz overclock on a i5 760. My new cooler is coming later today and would like to start oc this thing. Its my first rog board and im a little over whelmed by all the bios options:eek:
Thanks.
You can easily get 4GH+ on the auto settings - try that and tweak it from there.
Ok cheers i'll try that. So just set it to 20x200, everything on auto yeh? I'll need to set my ram as its only running at 1333 at 9-9-9-24. There cas7 dominator gt's, but i can take care of that in bios no probs.
Thats it - that'll get you to 4ghz. I had to set my ram too - 1600 gskill tridents, but tweaking ram on this board is super easy i found.
Auto voltage tends to over-compensate for vdroop, so thats the first thing i focused on.
Ok cheers mate. Just wish my venomous x would hurry up and get here so i can get started :D
excellent board, the friend of mine had bought it a week ago
Having a mare with this board!! Had it runnig fine at 3.6 then today got some bsod. No matter what i try it just bsod after windows loaded. I know im doing something wrong as im not used to such an in depth bios. Tried searching for bios templates to use as a guide but cant find any. Mem test ran fine with no errors, i have latest bios to support the i5 760. Could i use these settings below as a guide, even thought they are for the 860?
